Conflict in the Middle East

Why aren't women and children being evacuated from gaza?

I've just seen horrific photos of starving children on a news article. Why on earth are we not evacuating them? The population isn't huge, if split between many countries the cost of supporting them would be minimal compared to other expenditure.
I don't understand how it's been left to get to this point without anyone intervening, or really how everyone hasn't intervened.
Who cares about the land at this point, these are children who are likely to die by the look of them, who could live a happy healthy life somewhere else.

Good question - evacuated to where though? No Arab country wants them. Egypt has built a wall which can be seen from space to block Gazans from seeking refuge there. Israel, for very understandable reasons, cannot and will not evacuate them.
But what's preventing Egypt, which shares a border with Gaza from just opening the border and letting people through?

I don't think it's a good question.
Why is the question about evacuating them from their home and their land, instead of about allowing food and medicine to reach them, and stopping the disproportionate use of force.
It's glaringly obvious that Hamas poses zero threat to the civilian population of Israel today. With no threat to Israeli civilians, the systematic bombing and starving of civilians in Palestine for the sake of going after Hamas seems indefensible.
Hamas is helpless today. What needs to happen is peace, and the opportunity for war criminals on both sides of the conflict to be brought to justice

Why do the Israelis get to decide who is “allowed back”?

I think it's because it's occupied territory, they are the occupiers so control the borders

In short, Arab nations have always resisted further refugees as they believe it would take responsibility off Israel. This is why countries other than Jordan refused to grant even ‘48 refugees citizenship. They want it to be clear that as far as they are concerned the only solution is an independent Palestine.

the unspoken part is that they don’t want them.

The actual reason no one wants them can be answered by a quick online search of how Palestinians repaid their hosts in Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt and so on.

Shouldn’t you be asking why Israel is not letting food and aid in whilst targeting all the hospitals and health workers in Gaza . Hundreds of thousands killed by Israel and not one mention of that in your post

Because this has always been about grabbing land

Israel is now letting food in. I wonder how this will be reported as it partially removes the journalistic narrative of continual starvation (which helps Hamas of course). Some of that hair we have to be realistic and say it will end up in the hands of presumably hungry Hamas fighters, indeed it would be foolish to think turnaround not have first call on the food.

I started a thread this morning: Israel announces 'tactical pause' to fighting and says it will open aid corridors.

Which obviously should be welcomed as a good thing by everyone. I'm sure there will be some criticising Israel for it though!

They have a legal responsibility to do this as occupiers. As they always have had.
I won’t criticise their leadership for this nor will I praise them for doing the minimum.

There will be plenty that will criticise Israel for something about it, even if you don't.

I don't want people to praise them for it particularly - personally I think it's well overdue. It would just be nice if the news could be celebrated a little as I'm relieved and happy to see that more aid will be getting into Gaza.

Nobody should be celebrated for a basic thing though. It should be covered factually.

You say "nobody should be celebrated" as if I expect people to praise a person for it (or a government) but it's the fact of it happening that I will be celebrating.

mids2019 · 27/07/2025 08:25

There aren't that many conflicts where an enemy feeds its opponents or allows food in.

I would think Hamas aren't entirely happy with aid in some respects (part from its fighters being fed) as the images from Gaza were absolutely causing shifts in western populations views and if Israel are trying to mitigate this propaganda opportunity then Hamas has lost this PR opportinity.

localnotail · 27/07/2025 08:32

My understanding is that no other Arab country wants to allow Palestinians in as they worried they might invertedly import the extremist Islamist views and activity, destabilising the country. I think it already happened in the past? I think countries in the West are also worried about that, too.

I feel extremely sorry for all the civilians in Gaza, they have been pawns in this war, even their own government doesn't give a crap. Which is horrendous, considering how large families in Gaza seem to be - often 6-10 or even more children in each family. That's a lot of kids caught in this awful war. ((

Yes I honestly think that Hamas and some of their supporters will be disappointed by the IDF's announcement that "a local tactical pause in military activity will take place for humanitarian purposes from 10:00 to 20:00 (07:00-17:00 GMT), starting today (Sunday)" in the Gaza Strip.

It says "the pause will begin in the areas where the IDF is not operating: al-Mawasi, Deir al-Balah, and Gaza City, every day until further notice.

And also that the IDF has announced that "designated secure routes will be in place permanently from 06:00 to 23:00 to enable the safe passage of UN and humanitarian aid organisation convoys delivering and distributing food and medicine to the population across the Gaza Strip."

Jordan got their fingers burnt badly playing host many years ago and it appears since then that nobody wants to risk a repeat on their soil.

This is nonsense, they don't want them because they cause trouble.
