What do you understand from the chant 'Free Palestine'?

Just that really. I have seen there have been many marches these last few days where people in solidarity with Palestinians chant 'Free Palestine'
Now I understand that as Free Palestine from the occupation; West Bank vs Settlers, military rule, and blockades in Gaza.
I have asked a Palestinian friend and a Lebanese neighbour what they think it means and they confirmed what I thought.

But the chant is triggering many others to believe it is anti Semitic or that it means something else and it's passing me as to what else it could mean.

And of course Palestinians can live in peace if they get rid of Hamas and stop attacking Israel.

History would tell you this would not happen. There was no peace for the Palestinians from 1948 to 2005 (when Hamas came to power). There is no indication that the solution for peace is to not have Hamas.

This can’t happen for Palestinians unless the State Of Israel no longer exists as “from the river to the sea” refers to Israel’s lands. You must know this.

I’ve been absolutely staggered to read that so many posters seem to be under the impression that the Jews simply came along and kicked Palestinians out of their country. That is not what happened.

They did though, with the blessing of the US and U.K. They came and they forcibly removed Palestinians from the lands and homes. Over 400 villages that refused to flee were simply massacred.

Free Palestine from the river to the sea can happen even with Israel still being the nation state of the region- it is a call to end the apartheid and oppression on the Palestinians within the region.

Teddleshon · 27/10/2023 15:26

It wasn’t their country. Palestinians were constantly attacking Israel over that time period. They are still firing rockets even now.

? The Palestinians were living there under Ottoman and then British rule, what do you mean it wasn’t their country? Are they serfs to be sold with the land from British to Zionist owners? Just like trees and donkeys that happen to be on the land?

This is so ridiculous there isn't even a response.

Its not the country of people living there for centuries, but it is the country for people who grabbed it forcefully, violently and murderously because they felt they had a right to?

Teddleshon · 27/10/2023 15:42

When do you think the Jews were first recorded as being in the land that is now known as Israel?

Hippyhippybake · 27/10/2023 15:43

The Jews have been driven out of countless ancestral homelands for millennia.

Well, if you go by the Talmud it would be after they conquered Jericho and put every man, woman and child to the sword and then proceeded to conquer the Canaanites. It is the “Promised Land” that Moses led them to out of Egypt (keep in mind Egypt technically ruled most of the area at the time), so they must have been just across the border of New Kingdom Egypt.

If you go by archaeologists’ DNA tests of unearthed skeletal remains of inhabitants from the Levant region compared to DNA of Jewish and Palestinian peoples, they arrived at the same time circa 1500 BC and are actually one ethnicity the only difference between them being that various segments adopted different new religions as they emerged- Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

piddocktrumperiness · 27/10/2023 16:38

You know, this thread is ridiculous. We are never going to get passed the 'I was here first' argument

My issue is the current occupation. Or the denial that there is one actually. The gaslighting is obvious. I've been watching reporters, journalists, people on TV and the second a Palestinian has said 'what about the daily oppression in the West Bank' they get cut off or deflected back to Gaza and Hamas.
Whenever the word apartheid is thrown around, same thing.

Very interesting
Thank you for sharing that

I think you meant the Tanakh, but it claims that Abraham reached Canaan long before the Exodus from Egypt.

"Different segments adopting new religions" is one way of describing it, I suppose. There was always conflict between the Jewish states and neighbours in Biblical times ("Philistines" is the old word for "Palestinians.") The Jewish diaspora and subsequent power-vacuum after the Romans destroyed the Second Temple in 70CE led to all sorts of repercussions which are still rumbling on today.

Someone tell me how this video that I just posted is not apartheid. Educate me please, and no deflection. Just look at it and explain to me what you would call this

I totally agree on the subject of the settlers and hopefully that is something that can be solved but don’t the checkpoints and military presence reflect the fact that Israel has been under attack for decades? Obviously there are a significant number of Arabs who live and work in Israel and hold many public positions etc.

Louloulouenna · 27/10/2023 17:39

Isn’t the captain and half the Israeli football team Muslim?

StarbucksSmarterSister · 27/10/2023 17:58

There are Arab MPs and one on the Supreme Court, not just the football team.

Teddleshon · 27/10/2023 18:10

Seems an unusual version of apartheid.

Parkingt111 · 27/10/2023 18:12

This is sickening
The Internet in gaza has been shut down the same time the bombing has intensified
Nobody from inside can report what is happening

Are you really that heartless than you can see a live bombardment on a civilian population and come up with that response?

Teddleshon · 27/10/2023 19:26

I’m not heartless at all but I think the best and probably only way forward for the Palestinian people is to get out from under the yoke of a terrorist organisation. If they continue with Hamas in charge the future looks truly terrifying for them.

The freedom they need is from the evilness of the Israel who is bombing them, pounding them, destroying them, men, women, children, elderly, as we speak. So please, please just come off it.

Your loved ones were not wrenched from their ancestral homes by the Israeli govt, packed into a jail, living under illegal occupation and brutality for the past decades and now bombarded out of existence by the Zionist forces. It's easy for you to sit behind your keyboard with your what-about-ery because you are not sitting there comte playing the erasure and genocide of an entire people, as we speak. We are not taking about history. We are talking about NOW. you are lucky that you are not thinking of a dear family member sitting in darkness awaiting death by bombardment.

But you know what? You may be "lucky" to be so removed by this that you can make callous comments on the Internet, but history will show you and others like you are the unlucky ones who sat by watching and cheering a live genocide. I pity you
