Guess I’m going to the shops after all. How has everyone else done?

@SockFluffInTheBath

I suppose the only gain from doing it yourself is you can choose your own swaps. All the missing items are not going to magically restock for me being in there in person. I am however much more likely to rack up a body count swinging a trolley round tesco at this time of year Xmas Angry
Actually there is a reasonably good chance that the items will be in stock if you go in store.

The stores (the ones near me anyway) have staff in overnight to prepare food and re-stock the counters and shelves. Unfortunately this often means that the items aren’t put out on the shelves until after the pickers have done some of the orders.

My son works in the supermarket I shop in, so I message him if some items have been out of stock in my delivery, and 90% of the time he has managed to get the items for me!

Moomarre · 22/12/2021 14:44

Mine (Tesco) only had four subs and they were all sensible; brandy butter for brandy butter, pate for pate (x2), pork pie for pork pie.

The only thing that annoyed me a bit was that I’d ordered a festive food to order pudding and it’s use by 24/12.

tickingthebox73 · 22/12/2021 14:45

@loopylindi

do posters really think that once they've placed their order it's picked and sits in a basket until delivery? I might have got the wrong end of the stick but that's the impression I get from some of these posts.
Given most orders are placed in advance, then yes - I would expect most of it to be made available for the order.
TheAnswerIsCake · 22/12/2021 14:46

We logged in last night to check the out of stocks. Seven things on our order were unavailable - mainly the 3 for 2 party food items, but also some general things for this week. We made sensible subs ourselves and they all arrived this morning. We always check the night before so we can make our own subs in this way and don’t need to send stuff back. Works for us.

SockFluffInTheBath · 22/12/2021 14:48

@Onerulefor1 that’s worth knowing, thank you. We normally go to Waitrose on the way home from Tesco for any missing bits, but I hate Waitrose (or rather the sort of people in there).

sueelleker · 22/12/2021 14:53

I never sub-I'd rather go out or go without something than fiddle about returning stuff.

tupperwaretowers · 22/12/2021 14:54

Sainsbo’s today, 15 subs which I’ve accepted. I can’t get worked up about any apart from Birds custard powder subbed with instant sachets you add water to. Anyone know if I can add milk instead, I’m worried Im going to end up with a pissy watery trifle. Result on my mini choc puds £4 subbed with gorgeous christmassy giant ones £12!

LunaLoveFood · 22/12/2021 14:54

Ours is coming from asda this evening, 7 good subs, 1 annoying (single cream instead of double, so will have to pop to corner shop for it) and 1 unavailable (disposable turkey tray) sawmill just have to wash up. At least won't have to venture inside supermarket.

KatherineJaneway · 22/12/2021 14:55

Mine due tomorrow and we've already planned a Tesco visit afterwards to pick up unavailable items and see if there are any last minute bargains.

shinynewapple21 · 22/12/2021 14:55

It would be interesting to see where posters lived, and whether the places with the poorest stock levels are in areas with high Covid levels and staff having to isolate .

In terms of delivery driver availability, I live in the West Midlands and recently have had two Sainsbury's drivers telling me they are having to make deliveries as far as Wales !

DockOTheBay · 22/12/2021 14:58

I had 5 subs, which was fine - things like one brand of crumpets for a different brand, crossiants for pain au chocolat.

However, all the specifically "Christmas" stuff (xmas pud, brandy cream, tempura prawns, stuffing) was unavailable and not even substituted. You think they would have bought in extra stock of that sort of thing in the week before Christmas, especially when all the slots were booked up weeks ago.

RadioSixMusicLover · 22/12/2021 15:05
@StarfishDish do you work for Tesco? Yes I have paid for someone to do the shop but not paid someone to take away the stressful bit! It has become massively more stressful because I chose to have my shopping delivered, something I have done every week for the past 15 years.
I think people are just trying to help you understand.
You pay for the picking, packing and van upkeep, petrol etc etc.
Christmas is a different kettle of fish.

TuftyMarmoset · 22/12/2021 15:07

I had 4 or 5 from Sainsburys but have managed to pick up most of it elsewhere. Haven’t been able to get potato cakes for weeks now for some reason Confused and ground hazelnuts don’t seem to be sold anywhere else so will have to sub ground almonds in my recipe.

RadioSixMusicLover · 22/12/2021 15:07

Gotta love MN. People go out of their way to explain and it just gets ignored. I sometimes think it’s the moaning bit they like!

Nowmum43 · 22/12/2021 15:09

@RadioSixMusicLover you are right, I am sorry. I am stressed and foolishly expected that doing an online shop would help me in the run up to Christmas. It hasn't it's made things more stressful m. A lesson I will learn from.

Livpool · 22/12/2021 15:09

4 subs which were fine and no pizza for DH and I to share on Christmas Eve from Asda. I was happy

lackingchristmasspirit · 22/12/2021 15:10

Oh no, don't say this!

We're now isolating for Christmas so I have no option of heading out to the shops 😭

NovemberNovemberDarkNights · 22/12/2021 15:13

@Staryflight445

Have Ocado coming tomorrow, really hoping I don’t have to get my husband to go shops. We’re still daily LFTing due to positive covid household case and only did this online shop incase we literally can’t go get anything ourselves.

£10 for the delivery slot and a minimum of £90 spend, they better cough up what I’ve ordered.

I got quite excited I could still get an Ocado slot. I pay for the mid week pass, but no longer use it since they went from waitrose to M & S. anyway spent ages doing a shop, found some new things to try (vegetarian & usually low carb, but take a break over Christmas) then got to the end & it removed £35 of stuff saying it was no longer in stock & that my irder needed to be over £90. I already had my delivery from Tesco booked today, so didn't really want to spend £90, bit gutted a) I wasted so much time doing the order & b) I didn't realise I needed to spend £90 c) I'm missing out on trying the new things in my small window of opportunity.

But I'm not going near the shops (CEV) so, it is what it is.

I chose to go 'no substitutes' with my Tesco order & the only thing I didn't get was a Bucks Fizz. 💁🏻‍♀️

Between Tesco & I (not exactly sure which of us) my Brie & Cranberry parcels fell off my order, despite them being the sole reason I held out for a 'Christmas slot' 🙄. But gutted about that as I only find any near Christmas & with the low carb thing they're a real 'off piste' treat 😩

I can see some slots for Ocado on Friday.
HardbackWriter · 22/12/2021 15:16

I try and think of the online order as taking the edge off the Christmas shop, not entirely replacing it. I'll still have to go, but hopefully it'll be to get a basketful not a trolleyful, which is a lot less hassle. That said, my Christmas shop is coming tomorrow so I might be less zen about it then!

EnjoyingTheArmoire · 22/12/2021 15:18

I had a text from Ocado apologising as there were a lot of missing and subbed items due to a technological issue.

All of the Xmas meal bits are there, but it's the staples that I buy every week (milk, plant milk, wraps etc) that are missing. We can't chance a trip to the supermarket so I'm hoping to get a deliveroo Co-op delivery (or similar) to sort it out.

The subs were a bit questionable too - instead of garlic puree they sent an obscure fajita mix Confused

It would have been nice not to have the hassle, as I feel that we pay a premium at Ocado to avoid stock issues.

NMC2022 · 22/12/2021 15:18

2 sainsburys subs, both sensible!

Grrrr - over 15 items tesco subbed which I’ve had to return
RamblingFar · 22/12/2021 15:19

Our family Tesco delivery came yesterday. 1 sub - wholemeal rolls not brioche rolls. Otherwise, it was all there.

icedcoffees · 22/12/2021 15:20

I did ours with Tesco - no subs and only two missing items which weren't important things anyway.

VickyEadieofThigh · 22/12/2021 15:32

Got all we needed at Aldi yesterday afternoon - only slightly busier than usual. Big packs of veg 19p each!
