My 12 year old has asked for and airsoft/bb gun, which I’ve said a big fat no to!! He now hates me, and I’m so unfair, apparently all his friends will be getting one for Christmas!

Besides the fact that we have no where locally he could go and play it legally/safely/ with rules etc, whatever. I am not buying my 12yr old a gun for Christmas Xmas Hmm

So my No for the mini fridges have many reasons...

Their rooms are literally a graveyard of cups and glasses. 17yo brings them downstairs once a month.

17yo took my favourite big tiger mug up there and never brought it down. When I politely queried its whereabouts I was told it had got so mouldy that she couldn't bare to wash it so it went in the bin.

Their rooms are a mess. I am disabled so cannot clean on their behalf. I'm not spending money on fancy bedroom stuff until they start taking care of their own spaces.

And finally (and this is mainly the 17yo) she has ASD, ADHD and anxiety. She goes through days where she literally only leaves her room for food and drink. If she had her own fridge then she would be able to completely shut herself away which isn't healthy.

@HelloDaisy

When ds was three he asked for another baby sister for Christmas as he loved his so much already.

As she was only a few months old we said no! By the next year he had forgotten that and never asked again.

A baby doll would have been perfect alternative for him to look after!
foxlover47 · 11/12/2021 09:14

Looking back I spent so much over the last few years on these crappy lol dolls , the house , the winter chalet , the cars , bus , plane and it's plastic tat!
This years request for a pony got a firm no riding lessons will have to do till she's older ( she's 9)
I owned horses and enjoy not having the worry of owning horses anymore ( the downsides I mean of vet costs etc )
So she's got a crafty
Pony instead

@rhubarb84 Now I want a replica sword, axe, and bike helmet for Christmas! Grin

There hasn’t been an outright ‘no way’ but for months DS7 has asked for a Switch/Switch Lite (he has a kids tablet but no gaming device of his own)... due to poor behaviour around his current tech usage/moodiness afterwards, we did sit him down and explain we won’t be buying him a switch until that changes, so we’ll discuss it again before his birthday next year. He took it surprisingly well, but we’ll see as a couple of his mates are getting one for Xmas!

whywouldntyou · 11/12/2021 09:25

Ah the 'every one else will be getting one' syndrome. It's bollocks. Ignore. Tell him if he hates you that will save you a fortune in presents because no one gives gifts to ungrateful people. Sorted.

TheOldLadyOfThreadneedleStreet · 11/12/2021 09:28

My DD has been desperate for a dog for many years but it is not going to happen, sorry but the main care would fall on me and I’m not keen! I did get her guinea pigs 4 years ago and they are now gorgeous members of the family. DD loves her guineas but is not fully satisfied. She’ll have to wait until she is grown up.

Luckily he’s only said it in jest and seems to have a good sense of humour about it… I think deep down he know’s it’s a stupid request!
@LuluBlakey1 You can get sharks teeth off ebay? Not expensive.
Yes but I dread to think how they get them.

itspartytime · 11/12/2021 09:42

Daughter (20) wanted a puppy . We lost our dog 3 years ago and I'm not ready to 'replace' him yet. Said no and gave reason .

Her boyfriend then asked too, as he thought he could buy her one for Christmas. Same answer and added that we didn't think she'd understand quite how much work a puppy is.

Came back from a week working away to find a puppy in my dogs bed . He's still here.

The funniest thing is this though, the vet called me, to give me the bill for my daughters dogs injections!

As she'd taken him to our old vets and he now appears to be on my 'account !' Kids !!! Ffs 🤦‍♀️

itspartytime · 11/12/2021 09:44

( just to add she still lives in family home with my DH and me )

Wrongaddress · 11/12/2021 09:45

I got my then 14 yo an airsoft gun a few years ago...

Fluffycloudland77 · 11/12/2021 09:55

I’m glad I’m not the only one still salty about Mr Frosty.

mam0918 · 11/12/2021 09:57

Are you sure that's what he means?

I have only ever known 1 fully grown adult with a proper Airsoft gun and it was a hunting gun for shooting rabbits - It was literally powerful enough to kill small creatures.

When I was a kid though those 'B.B. Guns' from the market were super popular, they fired little rubber pellets and my 2-year-old brother even had one, they couldn't hurt a fly.

As another option I got my teen a spud gun this year as a silly little toy, they can be picked up for a few pound.

My main rule is nothing that looks realistic and could be mistaken for real (like a replica).

I have never really had to say no as my kids dont really ask for stuff, my teen made a passing comment about a brand new Iphone and PS5 and both just got laughed at so I think he gets the message lol. (he doesn't need a phone, he already has a better one than me that he doesn't use and he has a perfectly good PS4 so no need for the PS5)

LalaDipsey · 11/12/2021 10:00

@LuluBlakey1 try Jurassic Jim (Facebook!) - yes excellent and you'll be able to get a shark's tooth from him. Need to watch for when he posts them up

Makes me think of the quote

'there no love like that of a father and the dog he didn't want'

My dad insisted we couldn't have a dog, convinced mam to let us get one and it was dad that was madly in love with her in the end... he's now begging for another dog and it mam that says no.

cleofatra · 11/12/2021 10:06

Yes, we have said no to
dog
katana

mam0918 · 11/12/2021 10:07

@megletthesecond

A rock tumbler. Noisy and I'd worry it would catch fire.

My eldest wants a mini fridge (for cold water and chocolate biscuits) but there isn't any space for one in his room.

My DS had a rock tumbler from a family member... sounded like a good educational gift as he liked gem stones but oh my god the noise was insane and your supposed to run it for 2 weeks straight even overnight, it got used for about an hour and put back in the box.
Peanutmnm · 11/12/2021 10:07

All screen type things but it's very hard. It wiped most of the no. 1 wished for things off 3 of my kids lists.

mam0918 · 11/12/2021 10:11

@ZenNudist

God, everything!

No nerf guns, as ds (7) shot a friend I'm the face Shock

No £200 gaming chair (expense, narrow loung)

No Victor and rolf spice bomb aftershave for ds(11)

No ty toys we have millions

Ditto funko pops

No phone for my 7yo

No dog, nor pets

No expensive trainers for 11yo ds. He has an expensive pair, he can get another when his feet grow, not before.

No tablets for dc. They use ours we have 3 so am not buying ipads for children to access whenever they like.

I think you've got to be sensible.

some of this list seems OTT... like isn't that the whole point of nerf guns, they're hardly dangerous.

I would say you are wise with the gaming chair though... we have had 2 and both broke in about 6 months becoming just very expensive heavy computer chairs and eventually getting replaced with just normal chairs.

mdh2020 · 11/12/2021 10:11

I once said no to DS aged 15 who wanted a leather jacket. He did three weeks work for his aunt and earned the money to buy one himself. He asked for a Ferrari for Xmas every year and never got one.

Doomscrolling · 11/12/2021 10:31

@LuluBlakey1 - I can have a root through my little fossil box if you like; at one point I had several shark teeth and if I’ve still got one I’ll post it to you if you DM me.

BearSoFair · 11/12/2021 11:35

A goat when DD was a toddler. A few months later I was pregnant with DS2, she asked for a goat instead of a baby brother or sister then too Grin

Froppysue · 11/12/2021 11:40

Sharks lose their teeth often and can grow new ones in their place, nothing horrible is done to get them - they’re regularly found on beaches.

Dd asks daily for a kitten, which is a no. Obviously I don’t agree with animals for Xmas but I do get a pang every time she asks as our dcat passed away last year, 2 days before New Years.
Dh has said he never wants another cat, ever, and I wouldn’t get one unless the whole family was on board Sad

ponkydonkey · 11/12/2021 11:50

X box
PlayStation
Electric scooter

He's 17 now so he knows he's not going to get one.

Very sociable and passed all his GCSEs though so I guess it worked

ballsdeep · 11/12/2021 11:55

@Theunamedcat

Nerf guns ds wants "real" nerf guns not the cheap copies they have already so we had a conversation where I asked what did mummy tell you NOT to do with the guns 🙄 "we don't shoot in the face or the privates" aaaaasnnnd what did you do? Shot my brother in the balls...yeah moms not buying you anymore guns
