My 12 year old has asked for and airsoft/bb gun, which I’ve said a big fat no to!! He now hates me, and I’m so unfair, apparently all his friends will be getting one for Christmas!

Besides the fact that we have no where locally he could go and play it legally/safely/ with rules etc, whatever. I am not buying my 12yr old a gun for Christmas Xmas Hmm

God, everything!

No nerf guns, as ds (7) shot a friend I'm the face Shock

No £200 gaming chair (expense, narrow loung)

No Victor and rolf spice bomb aftershave for ds(11)

No ty toys we have millions

Ditto funko pops

No phone for my 7yo

No dog, nor pets

No expensive trainers for 11yo ds. He has an expensive pair, he can get another when his feet grow, not before.

No tablets for dc. They use ours we have 3 so am not buying ipads for children to access whenever they like.

I think you've got to be sensible.

Unless intentional, this wouldn’t stop me getting my DS a nerf gun. They’re brilliant guns and you can get an age appropriate one rather than the really powerful ones.

@NovemberNovemberDarkNights

They are 8 and 12 its being driven by the 8 year old we have a small garden too so it's not like they have much space to play around in! We found one of the "bullets" from the cheap set out on the road once they had literally shot it over the house 🤣

@LuluBlakey1

DD has asked for 'a real fairy to have as a pet'. DS1 asked for 'a shark's tooth' - he's not getting one unless we find one on a beach.
Presumably you have explained to your DD that fairies are free living beings that don't need or want humans to look after them, and that even if it was possible to catch one (which of course it isn't as they can fly incredibly quickly, and can do magic, which includes invisibility spells. Which of course also means that actually getting to see a fairy is very, very difficult - I have spent hours standing stock still, barely breathing, because I didn't want a sudden movement of mine to scare any away, and I still didn't get to see one properly. But sometimes on a woodland walk, if you keep very quiet, and are very, very lucky, you can glimpse one as a very quick flicker from the corner of your eye, but sadly when you turn your head to see her or him properly, the movement scares them into becoming invisible again), it wouldn't be right to do so.

I am sure that you will have gone on to explain that there are only a few animals that it is kind and fair to keep as pets, ones that have become dependant on us. The best example of which are of course domesticated dogs. Except in countries that still have completely wild dogs, like Africa and Australia, most dogs don't live naturally in canine packs any more. They have become dependant on us for not only their food and shelter, but particularly for our love and care, and they usually reciprocate by making our lives a lot more special too. Personally I would struggle to explain how it would be kinder to keep creatures like birds, hamsters, fish etc as pets because I think that they would usually be much better off with having the freedom of their natural habitats. Of course if someone has the space, the knowledge, and the dedication to look after animals that would have a much lower survival rate and/or face extinction in their natural habitats, then having them as pets can be beneficial on both sides. You obviously will have your own views on what animals it is kind to keep as pets, and will hopefully be able to pass that on to both your DC.

As others have said, a sharks tooth can be bought very cheaply, and I am sure some of them will have been ethically sourced.

I’ve been struggling with what to get DD because she actually hasn’t asked for much. So I did the old trick of ‘what are you hoping for the most for Xmas?’ To try and get ideas, she said a hamster Xmas Hmm no. I’m not totally against buying a pet as a present, but we have a dog, rabbit and 2 Guinea pigs (all indoors) already and DD is 9 so I know it’ll end up being me who cleans it and I don’t want to add more animal care to my daily chores.
She was a bit miffed when I said no live animals, and I’m still struggling with what to get her.

MsWalterMitty · 11/12/2021 07:58
@MadeForThis

Mine want those too. Nope.

I think I am giving them the same gift my parents gave me: future bonding with other people their age who weren't bought [insert fad item of the year].

The number of people who I've bonded with over NOT having had a Mr Frosty. In fact I think DH and I discussed it on one of our early dates. Did anyone really have them? Was there just one kid in every school in the land that had it?
Haha… yeah, i bet this is true!!! I didn’t get one either

@Happy1982ish

You have the law on your side op I don’t think you can purchase for an under 18
Yeah, I’ve explained to him that he can’t just walk around in public with a gun!

I don’t think he realised the legalities of his request. He knows now

This is the issue I’m having! He finally gives me an idea, and I say no! 🙈

@BlowDryRat £70 is expensive, but the giant kid I am, I kind of want to play with it 😂😂

NMC2022 · 11/12/2021 08:08

@BloomingTrees

Random but instead of a candle, a Disney Reed diffuser? The scent descriptions are in item details and they're really lovely (I have the candles)

@BlowDryRat

I've told 9yo DD that she will not be receiving this £70 plastic cauldron. £70! Apparently I can just pay for it using my card Hmm
My 6 year old has been refused this too. I was horrified at the price and the fact it only works once. My sister made me watch it on YouTube trying to convince me to buy DD one and she apologised after watching it. Absolutely not worth the money, £30 I might’ve considered it.

They're absolutely gorgeous & so much fun at those ages!! (When they're someone else's!) they grow so quickly & it's all tech & money.

Have they got a football on elastic? Hours of fun in those!

Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 11/12/2021 08:37

I always told mine that father Christmas will only bring things that your parents don't mind you having. That's why he never brought phones or consoles....

SpookyScarySkeletons · 11/12/2021 08:42

My DD's are 12 and 17 and both asked for a mini fridge for their rooms! 😂😂

We bought our son a mini fridge, he loves it. He keeps it stocked with fizzy drinks, alcohol and snacks, we all use it to save going downstairs sometimes. Blush It looks really smart as well.

SpookyScarySkeletons · 11/12/2021 08:58

@CoffeeAndDryShampoo

A crossbow. That'll be a no from me!
Crossbows terrify me! I read the book We need to talk about Kevin... do not ever buy anyone a crossbow and then read that book!

Why not? At 17 surely they’ve given it some thought?

When DD asked for an ipad she got a very long and nice letter back from Santa apologising for his rule that no electronics can be delivered.

She got one, but from us and that meant we could add as much restrictions on it as possible.

SeasonFinale · 11/12/2021 09:07

@rhubarb84

We say no to almost every request from DS8 because they're all insane. This year, he is not getting:

A drone
An axe
A £150 replica sword from the English Heritage shop
An airgun
A motorbike helmet

He doesn't mind, much. He's happily saving up money for the day when he's allowed to buy himself the sword.

Maybe sessions with a child psychologist instead!?
Happy1982ish · 11/12/2021 09:07

* When DD asked for an ipad she got a very long and nice letter back from Santa apologising for his rule that no electronics can be delivered. *

But her friends will receive from Santa
How do you get around that?

megletthesecond · 11/12/2021 09:10

A rock tumbler. Noisy and I'd worry it would catch fire.

My eldest wants a mini fridge (for cold water and chocolate biscuits) but there isn't any space for one in his room.

HelloDaisy · 11/12/2021 09:10

When ds was three he asked for another baby sister for Christmas as he loved his so much already.

As she was only a few months old we said no! By the next year he had forgotten that and never asked again.
