My 12 year old has asked for and airsoft/bb gun, which I’ve said a big fat no to!! He now hates me, and I’m so unfair, apparently all his friends will be getting one for Christmas!

Besides the fact that we have no where locally he could go and play it legally/safely/ with rules etc, whatever. I am not buying my 12yr old a gun for Christmas Xmas Hmm

DD1 has given up asking for a car this year, thank goodness. A real car. She's 9. 🙄

reluctantbrit · 10/12/2021 21:15

DD asked for candles and despite being 14 it is a big no as she is just not sensible with this in her room.

Guns - depending on your general opinion of them, would he want to learn to shoot properly? There are clubs who take them, starting with air rifle shooting and it is a great way to teach them responsibility and focus.

DD is a Scout and has learned to shoot with her pack when she was 11, air rifles first and with 12 also a small bore rifle. I first was very much "really??" but I could see the way she behaves and works with them. Saying that, no way a gun would it make it into our house.

Pickles89 · 10/12/2021 21:15

@XmasElf10 Urgh I HATE those things! Dangerous, damaging to the house and garden, boring after about 3 minutes, nowhere to keep them and why on earth would parents get their kid a car they just sit in?! Surely the whole point of ride on toys is to build on gross motor skills, and to burn their energy off propelling themselves around!?

DelurkingAJ · 10/12/2021 21:16

A longish list is requested for this reason. This year DS2 will not be getting a Mighty Pups Tower for three reasons (1) he has a Paw Patrol Tower (2) he’s nearly 6 and will almost certainly get less a year of play out of it and (3) because it’s stupid money that I would rather spend on the big Lego set he also covets. I am mean and he is resigned to the fact that he won’t get everything on the list.

ButteredOwl · 10/12/2021 21:21

No, I agree to most things and can't remember saying no to anything. But I pre empt lists by saying what the budget is. This works for us because it means they don't request something outside of the budget which is bloody generous anyway!

One is a teen and the other a young adult so no little ones.

CoffeeAndDryShampoo · 10/12/2021 21:24

A crossbow. That'll be a no from me!

rhubarb84 · 10/12/2021 21:29

We say no to almost every request from DS8 because they're all insane. This year, he is not getting:

A drone
An axe
A £150 replica sword from the English Heritage shop
An airgun
A motorbike helmet

He doesn't mind, much. He's happily saving up money for the day when he's allowed to buy himself the sword.

Wineandroses3 · 10/12/2021 21:35

My 8year old keeps asking for a PS5! He already has a PS4! I can’t justify spending £550 on a computer console so I have said sorry no, so he’s using the Santa line to which I replied mums and dads have to pay Santa for any very expensive toys !

DontTellThemYourNamePike · 10/12/2021 21:51

DS(9) wants the Lego Millennium Falcon. A snip at £650. He's not even that much of a Lego fan. Or a Star Wars fan for that matter ...

So, it's a big fat nope!

His older brother always asked for unusual presents around that age, but at least they didn't cost much - battery operated spaghetti fork; extendable, bendy torch; a set of plastic, coloured hooks🤣

AlphabetAerobics · 10/12/2021 21:58

My 9 year old has asked for: an iPhone, a boat, a quad bike, a pony and a field.

Guess what he’s getting from that list?

That’s right. Fuck all.

MyDcAreMarvel · 10/12/2021 21:59

@BlowDryRat that cauldron has really good reviews.

Holothane · 10/12/2021 22:00

All I wanted as a teenager was 007 novels, my friends brought me them one year I was thrilled the cow who brought me up wasn’t.

tortiecat · 10/12/2021 22:11

@LaBellaTrix

I remember asking for a kitten and getting a budgie in a cage.

I bloody loved that little blue bird.

He was my best mate during my teenage years, he'd sit on my shoulder and cock his head to one side when I'd wail about how I'd never marry Les McKeown out of the Bay City Rollers because my mum wouldn't even let me go and see them in concert, and then he'd shake his feathery head knowingly.

He was right, I never married Les and I think I dodged a bullet there.

I did eventually get a kitten of my own when I was all grown up and a very contented fat lump of fur he is.

Kids have unrealistic expectations but as long as Santa brings them something, it will be fine. Xmas Grin

This is brilliant. Everyone needs a sympathetic budgie 😄
MsWalterMitty · 10/12/2021 22:24

@MollysDolly

Firstly, allllllll his friends are not getting one.

There will be a rumour at school that Johnny's dad has got one and now Johnny boasts about how he sits on the roof at night, picking off coyotes/unicorns. And DS has become rather invested, so wants to look like the "cool" kid that's actually got one.

Absolutely not.

🤣 This is exactly whats happening!

Mine had air rifles, one got as far as representing the county. They haven't turned into mass serial killers, they have sensible public service jobs.

One asked for a donkey once, that was a no.

mincepiesallround · 10/12/2021 22:31

Nope to the ‘real’ car.

I would rather get the DC an air rifle than a BB gun.

Iamuhtredsonofuhtred · 10/12/2021 22:35

I’ve just said no to a Barbie dreamhouse; they’re £250 on Amazon and Santa has done all her shopping. But it’s THE ONLY THING SHE WANTS after weeks of saying she wants Santa to bring her a surprise. She’s gone to bed in tears and I’m not feeling shitty even though there’s just no way I could afford it

Kindlethefourth · 10/12/2021 22:36

DD2 wanted an expensive coat. Said no as she has a history of losing coats and tops and have stuck to my resolve!

Mrsmch123 · 10/12/2021 22:36

I repeatedly asked for a tiger. Couldn't understand why I couldn't keep it on the veranda. I eventually got over it😂

Iamuhtredsonofuhtred · 10/12/2021 22:37

She’s 8 and still believes in Santa, so of course why do I care if it’s expensive when Santa can just get the elves to make it? I cannot wait till the ridiculous charade is that get to be honest

StateOfTheUterus · 10/12/2021 22:41

A pink piano. We already have a (not pink) piano that we don’t have room for. So that’s a no!

NovemberNovemberDarkNights · 10/12/2021 23:01

@Theunamedcat

Nerf guns ds wants "real" nerf guns not the cheap copies they have already so we had a conversation where I asked what did mummy tell you NOT to do with the guns 🙄 "we don't shoot in the face or the privates" aaaaasnnnd what did you do? Shot my brother in the balls...yeah moms not buying you anymore guns
@Theunamedcat

😂😂😂

How old are they?

TheGirlWhoLived · 10/12/2021 23:04

@TheYearOfSmallThings

DS will not be getting that baby panda, and he will have to find a way to come to terms with that.
Dd2 is adopting a baby panda from wwf at £3 a month, she doesn’t know it yet- but she’ll be super happy
MojoJojo71 · 10/12/2021 23:11

@TheGirlWhoLived I’ve adopted a polar bear from WWF for DD too after her list (written this week after I thought I’d finished Christmas shopping!) included ‘a giant teddy bear’

Kyliealwayshadthebestdisco · 10/12/2021 23:18

Well done for saying no, I totally agree with you. I am less confrontational about it but tend to try to subtly steer my child away from things I wouldn’t approve of. Think only ever said an outright no to a hover board back in the early days when they were 1. Very expensive and 2. being imported from China etc. and liable to catch fire. When I explained that to him he wasn’t keen either so it was fine. I also discouraged him from playing Fortnite - fortunately his heart wasn’t set on it.
