My 12 year old has asked for and airsoft/bb gun, which I’ve said a big fat no to!! He now hates me, and I’m so unfair, apparently all his friends will be getting one for Christmas!

Besides the fact that we have no where locally he could go and play it legally/safely/ with rules etc, whatever. I am not buying my 12yr old a gun for Christmas Xmas Hmm

My eldest desperately wanted a mobile phone one year (she was 12 at the time-now-35 ) she wanted a Nokia because ALL her friends had one. DH and I said the only way she was getting a phone was if she earned the money herself. By the next day she had a paper round! I still can't believe we let her cycle around on dark mornings alone but she did win paper 'boy' of the year and had that phone within months!

BloomingTrees · 10/12/2021 23:32

A horse. I laughed at that one.

Gensola · 10/12/2021 23:36

I asked for a dog or a cat for years. Never got one. Still on good terms with both parents Grin also never got a Mr Frostie machine and still bitter about that 😂

Anordinarymum · 10/12/2021 23:36

@Kindlethefourth

DD2 wanted an expensive coat. Said no as she has a history of losing coats and tops and have stuck to my resolve!
Years ago my daughter wanted a cape coat from Karen Millen. We went into the shop and she tried it on. It was not substantial enough and awfully expensive. She was upset at not getting it. It was more expensive than any coat I had and it was a glorified poncho for goodness' sake I found one online from an eBay seller for less than half the price and bought it. It was the same coat with the same tags. She never wore it. It was the only unreasonable request she ever made but because she was so gutted at not getting the one in the shop I caved in. It ended up in a charity bag.

Dd6&4 have both requested Happy Nappers (damn that tv advert)

I've spent the last 6 months telling them that Santa doesn't bring Happy Nappers. They won't get used and will break.

But I'm getting Mr Frosty flashbacks and I'm afraid they could be ordered after all.

£75 for glorified pillows. Someone talk me down!!

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 10/12/2021 23:42

DD aged 9 wants an OMG dolls’ house that costs £230 and doesn’t even come with any dolls. When I pointed that out she looked at me like I was crazy and said “but I’d need some dolls too”. Santa is not bringing it either, but she still wrote it at the top of her list.

My 3 & 7 yr olds also keep begging for these. They’re very confused about why I always say absolutely not, when I usually at least say maybe, let’s put it on your Christmas list. I’m trying to stick to streaming programmes so they’re not watching shitty toy adverts!
Holothane · 10/12/2021 23:50

Happy mappers are 30 quid in Argos, wish they did adult version haha

Notwashingup · 10/12/2021 23:51

Santa brings toys here, not electronics so no to the Xbox and I-phone requests! DCs are 6 and 10 and DS got a switch for his birthday and have a ‘dumb phone’ already.

PearlSlaghoople · 11/12/2021 00:04

My DDad promised me he would ‘think about’ getting me a pet monkey… apparently the monkeys all escaped from the pet shop on the day he went to buy one…🤔
Took many years for him to admit I was never going to be getting a monkey!!

loveablequalities · 11/12/2021 00:06

No to Barbie Dream House (£250!!!!!) no to LOL dolls (because weird looking and a rip off) no to Bookeze (plastic tat) no to 90% of the Argos gift guide that mysteriously made its way into the house. My 4 yo says he wants every single thing he sees on an advert £60 Batman car? Nope. Get used to disappointment, kids!

To be honest they never remember what utter nonsense they've asked for. If something they didn't get sticks in the mind and gets mentioned again then they can save up for it. They LOVE doing that.

Nietzschethehiker · 11/12/2021 00:08

It had to be an outright no from Santa when DS2 (who is 6) requested a driving licence (a real one he clarified) . Obviously it was explained that Santa is definitely not going to be doing that (I have also noticed DP is no longer putting his car keys on the hook and the are being surreptitiously hidden...just in case Grin).

There have been No's for animals and in general they know that their letter to Santa is a wish list not an automatic.

Usefully they are young enough to forget usually what they actually wrote on the list and in general ar ehappy with what they get.

loveablequalities · 11/12/2021 00:12

@MadeForThis

Mine want those too. Nope.

I think I am giving them the same gift my parents gave me: future bonding with other people their age who weren't bought [insert fad item of the year].

The number of people who I've bonded with over NOT having had a Mr Frosty. In fact I think DH and I discussed it on one of our early dates. Did anyone really have them? Was there just one kid in every school in the land that had it?

ohsuzannah · 11/12/2021 00:14

@LuluBlakey1

DD has asked for 'a real fairy to have as a pet'. DS1 asked for 'a shark's tooth' - he's not getting one unless we find one on a beach.
Fossil sharks teeth are very cheap to buy online!
AugustRose · 11/12/2021 00:22

DS (10) has wanted a real, full size, steel Captain America shield for about a year. And not the painted one, no it has to be the plain silver one, just like it is when you see it in the film for the first time. They're about £130 on Etsy and he isn't getting one.

mafted · 11/12/2021 00:23

I've said no to loads over the years, the chocolate coin maker, multiple consoles, tv's for bedrooms, phones for primary aged DC, a Gucci belt, DC4 10 has asked for a dog every year since he was 3.
No regrets except maybe the chocolate coin maker.

TyrannosaurusRights · 11/12/2021 00:40

@rhubarb84

We say no to almost every request from DS8 because they're all insane. This year, he is not getting:

A drone
An axe
A £150 replica sword from the English Heritage shop
An airgun
A motorbike helmet

He doesn't mind, much. He's happily saving up money for the day when he's allowed to buy himself the sword.

A drone is a pretty sensible request really. You can get starter models pretty cheaply now.

They’re standard kit in lots of industries so being able to operate one might be a bonus on the CV in the future if they get into it (everything from the emergency services and energy industries to farming and wildlife preservation). Great gateway activity to computer programming, engineering, aviation, etc.

foxgoosefinch · 11/12/2021 00:49

DD (8) is NOT getting:

  • a baby
  • a dog
  • a hamster
  • a Nintendo Switch
  • a Tiktok account
  • to be in a film

all of which feature heavily on her Christmas list. And she will just have to live with it Grin

DramaAlpaca · 11/12/2021 00:58

The year DS asked for a real polar bear was a interesting one. I don't think the substitute cuddly one he got instead was quite what he was expecting Grin

RobertsRadio · 11/12/2021 03:06

Had to say no to a pony several years on the trot 😃, for obvious reasons. They survived without needing therapy.

On the trot............. LOL

My youngest asked for a tarantula when he was about five, and was obsessed with them. The guy in the shop said he was too young and we got him a Gecko instead.
He visited the Tarantula (a chilli rose) regularly and made Christmas cards for it which the guy put on the vivarium and he had his photo taken with it.

Later, when he grew older he became afraid of spiders, why I do not know.

Be very thankful is all I can say !

DeepaBeesKit · 11/12/2021 07:05

Ds (aged 4, nearly 5), asked for a red car. A real one.

Lucky he is good at maths, so I explained that one by reference to his weekly sweet money of 20p and how long it would take to save for.

Happy1982ish · 11/12/2021 07:06

You have the law on your side op
I don’t think you can purchase for an under 18

pinkcattydude · 11/12/2021 07:07
