Why does my DD want a fridge?

DD is 9 and has declared that a fridge is what she wants for Christmas. She won’t tell my why - she says “you’ll see” which I won’t because I’m not buying her a fridge (not even a mini one).

She watches lots of Tick Tock reels especially focusing on crystals - does anyone have a DD or DS they could ask - I’m sure it’s something she’s seen. If I know what it’s for I might be able to get something along the same lines…

I would imagine she means a mini fridge to keep snacks and drinks in her bedroom.

What's your reason for not buying her one?

Amandasummers · 19/11/2021 14:43

A beauty fridge?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 19/11/2021 14:44

Why cant she have a mini fridge?

ErrolTheDragon · 19/11/2021 14:45

I've not heard of kids wanting to do this, but you should be able to grow bigger, more perfect crystals if you do it cool and slow.

But if that's her plan then she'd presumably want something crystallisable to grow them from unless she's just planning on NaCl.

Soupseason · 19/11/2021 14:48

Because she wants to keep something cool?.

SleighBells21 · 19/11/2021 14:49

Why won't you buy her a fridge! 😭

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 19/11/2021 14:49

My children want a mini fridge. It's a no because we don't allow food and drink in the bedroom.

negomi90 · 19/11/2021 14:49

Surely you need to have a sensible conversation with her? Tell her you're worried about getting her one, and if she wants one, she needs to tell you why and what she wants one for. If its something innocent, then you get her a mini fridge (which can cost £20) with rules about not putting food in it.
But surely its not an automatic no, its a reasonable conversation.

Not even bottled water?
BananaPB · 19/11/2021 14:52

Is she allowed cans of pop? Otherwise she might want to keep beauty stuff like face masks in there?

OhMyCrump · 19/11/2021 14:55

I must admit I love her 'you'll see' answer! Made me chuckle.

I think you'll need to tell her if she wants to put it on the list she needs to tell you what its for first.

StarShapedWindow · 19/11/2021 14:59

She’s keeping the reason for wanting it very close to her chest so a ‘sensible conversation’ is a bit tricky.

We do let them take snacks upstairs but they don’t take chilled snacks up - what snacks would need to be chilled - we have fruit, biscuits etc.

She doesn’t like fizzy drinks and we have a fab fully working fridge full of apple juice and all the drinks she likes - we don’t live in a mansion so easy to come down the stairs and help herself.

I won’t buy a fridge because we have one and I think it’s a waste of money.

I expect it might be to grow crystals I’ll ask her again when she’s home from school.

I think she will mean a mini-fridge which is very in at the minute for that age range

StarShapedWindow · 19/11/2021 15:02

Is it @Cas112? I had no idea!

On tiktok people do refill videos of things like mini fridges, snack baskets etc. (I don't choose to watch them, just seen them) They're seen as satisfying videos and normally include ridiculously small water bottles and tiny cans of coke etc. She probably wants it for that.

StarShapedWindow · 19/11/2021 15:04

@OhMyCrump - the secrecy is worrying!

Innocenta · 19/11/2021 15:04

Be careful with mini fridges - we had two that were 'beauty fridge' sized, the kind people have in bedrooms. The first one just failed quite quickly, but the second one sparked and almost caused an electrical fire. I would never get one again.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 19/11/2021 15:05

she's a vampire and it's for storing blood - sthough he should get a freezer really

StarShapedWindow · 19/11/2021 15:05

@HelplesslyHoping - you’ve hit the nail on the head - that’s exactly the sort of thing she’d love. Thank you.

Intrigued to know!

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 19/11/2021 15:06

curious words there...I meant *though she...

ikeepseeingit · 19/11/2021 15:07

She probably just doesn't think you'll say yes if she says it's for snacks! There's nothing horrible she could use a mini-fridge for surely? 😂

StarShapedWindow · 19/11/2021 15:07

Thank you @Innocenta - that’s great advice.

@ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba - what an exciting prospect.

CherryAndAlmond · 19/11/2021 15:08

She's very young to have a fridge. At 14 plus I can kind of understand it - it would be great to be able to offer drinks to friends, or have a beauty fridge. But at 9? I would absolutely need to know why before even considering it.

HelplesslyHoping · 19/11/2021 15:11

If you get her a cosmetics fridge they're generally smaller, she can keep water, juice boxes, snack bars etc in them. They're not as cold as fridges so nothing perishable, but they're good fun at that age.
