Why does my DD want a fridge?

StarShapedWindow · 19/11/2021 14:39

DD is 9 and has declared that a fridge is what she wants for Christmas. She won’t tell my why - she says “you’ll see” which I won’t because I’m not buying her a fridge (not even a mini one).

She watches lots of Tick Tock reels especially focusing on crystals - does anyone have a DD or DS they could ask - I’m sure it’s something she’s seen. If I know what it’s for I might be able to get something along the same lines…

Why cant she have a mini fridge?
Because she’s 9 years old! Unless she’s going to actively use it to store really cool scientific specimens in there, then no. Just because your kid asks for something doesn’t they must get it.
Gliderx · 19/11/2021 15:16

I would get her the mini fridge as I can't see the harm in it. However, I would buy a decent-sized one in a neutral colour as we're short of fridge space at Christmas sometimes. Then I would wait until she got bored of it and snaffle it.

ittakes2 · 19/11/2021 15:18

My teen daughter wants one for her beauty products.

TeeBee · 19/11/2021 15:18

It'll probably be some tosh on Tik Tok that she wants to film and she'll probably get bored of it when she's finished filming. Can you borrow one from somewhere? Sounds like some nonsense my boys would have done at that age. At least these days they just seem to find recipes they want to cook from Tik Tok, so at least its just my food bill that's affected.

1forAll74 · 19/11/2021 15:23

Surely no one would buy a fridge for a nine year old. By the time she is 12, she will be wanting a car of her own, and a diamond ring..

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 19/11/2021 15:29

I didnt say it did.

But I like to have a reason to say no. No one has actually given a reason to say no

@StarShapedWindow

Is it *@Cas112*? I had no idea!
Yes my sister is the same age, she has been asking!
Elzbells · 19/11/2021 15:30

Oh it's a trend, my 11 and 14 year olds both have them on thier xmas list. I got them both one for £39 on amazon.

They want to create aesthetics on tik tokSmile

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 19/11/2021 15:33

I had one from around 10 and kept cheese strings in it.

Bought another one when I went to uni to keep lube in....and cheese strings...

OP said she felt like it was a waste of money.
TheSpottedZebra · 19/11/2021 15:39

The energy efficiency rating on these beauty fridges of normally pretty shitty. Eg a B when a good fridge you bought now would probably be A or A+.

If she's at all eco minded, she might not like that?

KurtWilde · 19/11/2021 15:42

@Cas112

I think she will mean a mini-fridge which is very in at the minute for that age range
I was about to say this. My DD also wants a mini fridge for Christmas. Can't see any reason to not get her one.
Pinkandpink · 19/11/2021 15:47

My son wants one as well he’s 11. I remember my stepson when he was that age wanting one too, he’s 22 now. To put snacks and juice in

Oftenithinkaboutit · 19/11/2021 15:47

Oh she will have a very sweet plan.
My 8 year old the same.
Nothing sinister, nothing to worry about (although having said that… mine doesn’t and never has watched any tik tok videos)

I imagine Tik Tok is the PROBLEM.

I didn't realise other parents were keen on allowing their kids to spend so much time on apps like this?

RubyFakeLips · 19/11/2021 15:57

I've just bought my DD one. I think it's a TikTok thing too, DH nearly strained himself eye rolling when I said I'd also bought myself one for beauty products.

Cas112 · 19/11/2021 15:58

Acinaces

OP is asking about a fridge, not your judgment of Tik Tok

Yeah, and she probably didn’t realise grown women spent so much time on Mumsnet..

StarShapedWindow · 19/11/2021 16:11

@Acinaces - you can’t really say ‘so much time’ - she is out at various clubs and dance lessons for most of her time, although I’m sure we all do things others would disagree with.

Buy her a full size under counter fridge aha 😁

It will be for tik tok purposes no doubt 😁

urbanbuddha · 19/11/2021 16:11

I've not heard of kids wanting to do this, but you should be able to grow bigger, more perfect crystals if you do it cool and slow.

Maybe she wants to grow a special crystal as a birthday surprise for you.

Is she even into make-up?

daddyorchipsdaddyorchips · 19/11/2021 16:13

Well...this thread just sent me to YouTube where I've spent the last ten minutes watching mini fridge stocking compilation videos. It is VERY relaxing.

I had no idea this was a thing

What have I become.

AMostExcellentStick · 19/11/2021 16:15

Id forgotten all about it, but I remember desperately wanting my own little fridge as a young teenager! Just as an independence thing I think.

StarShapedWindow · 19/11/2021 16:16

HelplesslyHoping was right - it’s for neatly displaying mini drinks and food. Who knew?

I really love all your suggestions, thank you. I don’t really know why I’m not comfortable with a fridge in her bedroom. I think they make quite a loud buzz which would be annoying for her at night and I think she’d fill it once and then never touch it again.

That's what my DD wants one for, too. I found one for £30 so she'll be one happy girl come Christmas Day!
