Why does my DD want a fridge?

StarShapedWindow · 19/11/2021 14:39

DD is 9 and has declared that a fridge is what she wants for Christmas. She won’t tell my why - she says “you’ll see” which I won’t because I’m not buying her a fridge (not even a mini one).

She watches lots of Tick Tock reels especially focusing on crystals - does anyone have a DD or DS they could ask - I’m sure it’s something she’s seen. If I know what it’s for I might be able to get something along the same lines…

@StarShapedWindow

My middle son, when he was nine, always asked for a deep fat fryer for his personal use.

I thought he'd outgrow the idea but he asked for it every single year and every year I said, "Hell NO!"

He's 24 now and is finally leaving the nest at the beginning of the year.
Guess what he's getting for Christmas?
I'm finally making his dream come true!

Not even bottled water?
Bottled water as in reusable bottles I hope? Are people really still buying awful single use plastic bottles? Grim.

NotMyCat · 19/11/2021 16:22

@daddyorchipsdaddyorchips

Well...this thread just sent me to YouTube where I've spent the last ten minutes watching mini fridge stocking compilation videos. It is VERY relaxing.

I had no idea this was a thing

What have I become.

I fell down a YouTube rabbit hole and found a channel I LOVE. She doesn't speak or shows her face but just her daily life and prepping food etc. It's so calming Blush and because she's in Japan it's nice seeing different recipes etc
StarShapedWindow · 19/11/2021 16:23

@elp30 that’s brilliant - I bet you can’t wait to watch him open it! Do you think he’ll use it more than once Grin

Yesm

Bottles filled from the tap and then chilled so they are nice and cool.

I love the way people are glibly talking about the cheap cost of a mini fridge and completely ignoring the running costs!

StarShapedWindow · 19/11/2021 16:30

Oh no @NotMyCat - now I want to stock DD’s (non existent) mini fridge! BlushWink

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz

Just because your kid asks for something doesn’t they must get it

I didnt say it did.

But I like to have a reason to say no. No one has actually given a reason to say no

Equally she hasn't given a reason as to why she wants it.
Garriet · 19/11/2021 16:33

Beauty products in a fridge…?

This is an entirely new concept to me and I’m middle aged.

A standard fridge costs around 9p a day. A mini fridge uses way less power.

I was about to say the same thing!

She has, it's for neatly displaying mini snacks and drinks

KatieKat88 · 19/11/2021 16:41

The second clip in that YouTube video was someone stocking a mini fridge for their toddlers' play kitchen. What the hell have I just watched Confused

KatieKat88 · 19/11/2021 16:41

Also... why do you need a fridge for beauty products Confused

BertieBotts · 19/11/2021 16:42

@Innocenta

Be careful with mini fridges - we had two that were 'beauty fridge' sized, the kind people have in bedrooms. The first one just failed quite quickly, but the second one sparked and almost caused an electrical fire. I would never get one again.
Cheap electricals from amazon are a huge problem - if they are coming direct from China (or dropshipped from China to a warehouse in the UK and then to you) it's extremely unlikely they'll be safety tested or conform to standards that we take for granted, nobody checks them for that kind of thing.

Might be no problem for a light or something, but a fridge is relatively complex and like Innocenta found, highly likely to be a fire risk. I wouldn't put one in a child's bedroom unless it was a brand I recognised or bought from an actual shop somewhere in the UK.

Because some products don't have preservatives and need to be kept cold. Because it feels nice on your face. Because it can bring down swelling under your eyes to put a cool cream there. Like, this isn't rocket science, that idiotic little twisty-mouth face is hardly necessary. There's an amazing website called google you should try!
TrulyPistoff · 19/11/2021 16:49

My son had one, he had to turn it off because of the loud buzzing sound. And it wasn’t even one of the cheaper ones.

DartmoorChef · 19/11/2021 16:51

I can't believe I have just watched a video of someone stocking a mini fridge....

I definitely need a life..

TractorAndHeadphones · 19/11/2021 16:51

Small foods and drinks are so cute
Defo not eco friendly however and as pp said fridges are complex - one of the top 3 causes of home fires. I wouldn’t risk buying a cheap one…

TurnUpTurnip · 19/11/2021 16:52

She wants it for snacks and drinks.

TractorAndHeadphones · 19/11/2021 16:53

Also to add DP has a mini fridge and I’ve just ordered a crate of beer in cans. Might film myself filling the fridge 😇

Polmuggle · 19/11/2021 17:40

@SliceOfCakeCupOfTea

I had one from around 10 and kept cheese strings in it.

Bought another one when I went to uni to keep lube in....and cheese strings...

Completely off thread topic, but why were you chilling lube?! Just for the feels?
GeorgiaGirl52 · 19/11/2021 18:03

My 15-year-old granddaughter asked me to get her a mini-fridge for her room as she is certain her parents would refuse. She wants to keep a few drinks and snacks for when her best friend comes for an overnight and also some beauty products - masks, lotions, etc. (Which she doesn't need as she is already beautiful!)
Yes, I am getting her one.

Must have missed that post.

It would be a big no from me.
