Why does my DD want a fridge?

StarShapedWindow · 19/11/2021 14:39

DD is 9 and has declared that a fridge is what she wants for Christmas. She won’t tell my why - she says “you’ll see” which I won’t because I’m not buying her a fridge (not even a mini one).

She watches lots of Tick Tock reels especially focusing on crystals - does anyone have a DD or DS they could ask - I’m sure it’s something she’s seen. If I know what it’s for I might be able to get something along the same lines…

@AntiHop

Sorry to be that poster - but you're letting your 9 year old have unsupervised access to tiktok?
I'm that poster, too.
KurtWilde · 19/11/2021 20:50

@hedgehogger1

I wouldn't buy her one either. Kids don't get stuff just because they want it
I thought the whole idea of buying kids presents was for it to be something they wanted? Clearly I've been parenting wrong for the last 25 years.
Ilovesandwiches · 19/11/2021 20:52

I use a mini fridge for my skincare products :) cx

festivefuschias · 19/11/2021 20:55

I’m very surprised at the reaction to not allowing a mini fridge in a 9 year old’s bedroom! My DD is 8 and would not get one if she asked (which would be unlikely because she doesn’t watch TikTok or YouTube). We have a perfectly good fridge in the kitchen and she doesn’t eat or drink in her bedroom anyway. Wouldn’t want another appliance that has to be kept plugged in either, especially in a bedroom.

sociallydistained · 19/11/2021 20:56

I asked my 12 year old why she had a mini fridge on her list. She said it was for beauty products only. I have no idea what beauty products they’d be but I am guessing they’ve seen it on TikTok 🙈

KatieKat88 · 19/11/2021 21:49

@Cordeyceps I'd genuinely never heard of needing to keep beauty products cold, I wasn't being arsey! Thanks for the info as that was genuinely helpful, the tone less so but I'll take it Grin

AutumnAnn · 19/11/2021 22:05

Mini fridge stocking videos are hugely popular on tiktok at the moment, they are nice to watch I'll admit.
I agree with some other posters though that you need to supervise what she's watching if you're letting her use tiktok, I'm nearly 30 and some of the stuff I've seen is absolutely horrific, I wouldn't want another adult to see it, let alone a child!

DirtyDancing · 19/11/2021 22:11

Genuine question, not to be goading, as a Mum with a DS heading towards 9.. is TikTok appropriate at that age? Can you suitability filter and protect content?

My knowledge is limited to two things on TikTok. 1. having the app for about 2 weeks last year and being horrified by the domestic abuse, content that appeared, and other really adult contents which shocked me a bit (I thought it was mostly reals about cakes, fashion and dancing!)

  1. Seeing people in the media copy things on TikTok and getting burnt/ dying etc.

Is there a kid appropriate version?

Clymene · 19/11/2021 22:11

I find the fact that people have no idea what their children are watching online really disturbing.

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 19/11/2021 22:32

Jeez I can barely get Dd to wash her hair let alone request fridges for complex beauty treatments.

Thank god for that, long may she reject the ridiculous scenario of a 12yo needing beauty products, let alone wanting a fridge for them.

What's nice about them? I watched the first 5 seconds and lost interest.

I echo your thoughts; Tik-Tok is full of disturbing videos and users. I've seen adults on there doing VERY questionable things. There is no way I would let a child peruse that app without me being present.
Acinaces · 19/11/2021 22:41

Pornographic images and videos are EASILY accessible on Tik-Tok as well. Plus, it's full of paedophiles too!

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 19/11/2021 22:41

I thought Tiktok was 13

bloodyhoodedeyes · 19/11/2021 23:05

To everyone getting mini fridges we did about 4 years ago and they are bloody noisy! So ended up being switched off and in a shed within 6 months.

So do a google if the noise before you choose.. I do know now they have different ratings. It was an expensive lesson.

anne2650 · 19/11/2021 23:12

My 13 year old begged for a mini fridge. It now sits redundant.

SimpsonsXmasBoogie · 19/11/2021 23:20

I think it's ok for a Xmas present to be a bit daft and frivolous. It's supposed to be something that she really wants and will make her face light up on Christmas morning. I think it's a bit mean to say she can't have something purely because you think it's a waste of money.

If she ends up not getting much use out of it then maybe she'll learn to think more carefully about what she asks for 🤷

Bimblybomeyelash · 19/11/2021 23:32

Good God, I’m officially past it. The world has moved on and left me behind. There is no way in the world that I would let my 9 year old watch tik tok (ITS NOT FOR NINE YEAR OLDS), and no way I’d let them have a bloody mini fridge in their bedroom (we have a fridge downstairs, I’m not letting them store snacks in their room, they buzz at night, it’s just going to end up on a rubbish heap in a year, it’s not a suitable present for a 9 year old. I really don’t think that I’m that odd because I know that all of my 9 year olds friends mums would say the same. Maybe we just live in some weird time warp
Town?

thaegumathteth · 19/11/2021 23:36

So much angst over a fridge. Our kids have had a mini fridge in the playroom for a couple of years, just mainly have fruit juice in it, sometimes grapes etc in summer. It's not that deep.

SleepingStandingUp · 19/11/2021 23:38

@ThisIsStartingToBoreMe

I would imagine she means a mini fridge to keep snacks and drinks in her bedroom.

What's your reason for not buying her one?

Because a 9 yo doesn't need snacks and drinks in her bedroom??

A playroom and bedroom are entirely different thoigh
N4ish · 19/11/2021 23:47

Really surprised that people are ok with 9 year olds having access to TikTok. My DD’s school are sending constant reminders that it’s not suitable for primary age children and warning of disturbing content.

KurtWilde · 19/11/2021 23:49

My DD is getting one for Christmas. My older ones had one at her age too. So much drama over a mini fridge that'll get a few fruit shoots and some petit fillous kept in it Confused

In 15 years time all these kids who's parents didn't buy them one will be making threads on MN about the injustice of it all. The mini fridge will be the Mr Frosty of this generation Grin

I echo your thoughts. A nine-year-old accessing Tik-Tok without supervision with a tonne of snacks inside a mini-fridge. What kind of parenting style is this?

A playroom is completely different from a bedroom.
