Why does my DD want a fridge?

208 replies

StarShapedWindow · 19/11/2021 14:39

DD is 9 and has declared that a fridge is what she wants for Christmas. She won’t tell my why - she says “you’ll see” which I won’t because I’m not buying her a fridge (not even a mini one).

She watches lots of Tick Tock reels especially focusing on crystals - does anyone have a DD or DS they could ask - I’m sure it’s something she’s seen. If I know what it’s for I might be able to get something along the same lines…

@N4ish

Really surprised that people are ok with 9 year olds having access to TikTok. My DD’s school are sending constant reminders that it’s not suitable for primary age children and warning of disturbing content.
The lack of NO filtering on Tik-Tok is mind-blowing.

I'm not sure if I'm wondering more about mini fridges in children's bedrooms or fridges for beauty products. Should I be keeping my Aldi face cream in the fridge? Will it make me look younger. I guess I'm off on a rabbit hole journey ... 🐇 🐇 🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇

Ha! My DDs had those little mini fridges (pink, don't shoot me) when they were last in fashion about 20+ years ago!

They were really cheap, so why not?

stinkycheeseman · 20/11/2021 00:25

My ds, about the same age, asked for a butterfly knife, on closer examination he had seen tictok videos of people doing tricks with their fake knives, like a sophisticated fidget spinner. He may get a blunt fake butterfly knife for Xmas, with strict instructions to only use it in the house. He doesn't even have tictok.

stinkycheeseman · 20/11/2021 00:28

I just mean, even if you limit their SM, it's like toothpaste, you can't put it back, only direct it.

saraclara · 20/11/2021 00:28

@KurtWilde

My DD is getting one for Christmas. My older ones had one at her age too. So much drama over a mini fridge that'll get a few fruit shoots and some petit fillous kept in it Confused

In 15 years time all these kids who's parents didn't buy them one will be making threads on MN about the injustice of it all. The mini fridge will be the Mr Frosty of this generation Grin

Ha! I'm in my 60s and still haven't forgiven my mum for not letting me have a Sindy doll because they were 'common'!

Needless to say I was quick off the mark to let my DDs have them!

toomuchlaundry · 20/11/2021 00:29

How many fridges do people need in one house? What happens when you don’t need it anymore? I’m assuming they aren’t great for the environment in anyway.

Lacura Caviar? Magic!

I'm still annoyed that my mum wouldn't give me the fridge she wasn't using. But that was when I was 19 not 9 Grin.

I’m afraid I have three. Only one is currently switched on.

@RubyFakeLips

I've just bought my DD one. I think it's a TikTok thing too, DH nearly strained himself eye rolling when I said I'd also bought myself one for beauty products.
Fucking hell. And we wonder why the planet is going to fuck? 🙄🙄🙄
Courtier · 20/11/2021 00:40

Probably for drinks and skincare.

You can't make drugs from a fridge or something

MobyDicksTinyCanoe · 20/11/2021 00:52

My genius friend has a fridge as her bedside table with a toaster and instant hot water thing on top hiding under fancy boxes on top of her chest of drawers....... She's a bloody genius.

BlueBooby · 20/11/2021 00:56

I didn't realise how normal it was for young children to be spending time on tik tok. And wanting a fridge for "beauty products" sounds like pretty grown up behaviour, way beyond playing with your mum's make up bag or whatever, and it actually makes me feel quite sad! I know that's not necessarily why ops DD wants one, but it's clearly a thing. I didn't expect to find a thread about a child wanting a fridge so depressing.

Kanaloa · 20/11/2021 00:57

@HelplesslyHoping

On tiktok people do refill videos of things like mini fridges, snack baskets etc. (I don't choose to watch them, just seen them) They're seen as satisfying videos and normally include ridiculously small water bottles and tiny cans of coke etc. She probably wants it for that.
Who the hell is watching other people fill their fridge up? I find myself having an out of body experience from the boredom of filling my own fridge up.

Still I can’t believe people watch other people cleaning. I don’t mind cleaning but watching other people clean? Unless it’s Kim & Aggie of course but I mainly liked seeing them making a fuss about how messy the place is.

Kinko · 20/11/2021 00:58

Tell her Santa doesn't deal in white goods! Haha.

user33323 · 20/11/2021 01:01

Interestingly my 16 year old has mentioned wanting a mini fridge a few times this year, but I browsed them and decided against it, since we won't allow food upstairs and she has braces so isn't allowed fizzy drinks etc so I really can't see the point. The fire hazard someone mentioned will be my reason if she asks again. But OP, 9 is FAR too young for TikTok. It has recently without doubt been the cause of serious mental health problems in my own DD and all my friends with teenagers, and they are significantly older. Clearly the mini fridge is a TikTok trend (I had my suspicions) but sadly other TikTok contagions are self harming, tic disorders, eating disorders and body dysmorphophobia. Please protect your daughter before she's asking for chest binders instead of a mini fridge.

@StarShapedWindow

HelplesslyHoping was right - it’s for neatly displaying mini drinks and food. Who knew?

I really love all your suggestions, thank you. I don’t really know why I’m not comfortable with a fridge in her bedroom. I think they make quite a loud buzz which would be annoying for her at night and I think she’d fill it once and then never touch it again.

I'm another one who is baffled

If the world is full of little children who think neatly organising a fridge is exciting - so much so that they watch videos about it - then I think my DC have a design flaw.

OP can I borrow yours for supermarket unpacking? 😂

Surely it's not safe to keep kitchen appliances in a badroom?!

According to building regs there needs to be a fire door between kitchens and the escape route for any sleeping areas.

DriftingBlue · 20/11/2021 01:48

I asked my young teen about this. She said half her friends want a fridge for skin care products and half want one for snacks. She hasn’t put one on her Christmas list, but she had thought about it. If she does, it would be for snacks. This led me briefly down the rabbit hole of mini fridge stocking videos. I must admit that anything that might actually get dd to be organized and neat has some appeal.

me4real · 20/11/2021 01:55

Kids don't get stuff just because they want it

@hedgehogger1 It's pretty harmless for an Xmas present- which are usually want someone wants, as long as it's not inappropriate and for a reasonable budget, and often hardly ever used again.

@StarShapedWindow I got a hot pink one for myself a few years ago from Argos, it was inexpensive. I planned to lock treats in it so I couldn't eat them without someone giving me the key. But I never used it. Grin It ended up going to a friend for her insulin. Looking on the Argos site they don't seem to have very cheap ones on there now.

@PetulantClerk How do all the hotel rooms, some of which I've heard had fridges, cope? Or all the tiny bedsits?

me4real · 20/11/2021 02:19

I finally cleaned my (normal) fridge the other day. Nowhere near as 'glamorous.'

verymiddleaged · 20/11/2021 02:35

My dc 13 both have mini fridges, they don't seem terribly used to me but they like them.
