Why does my DD want a fridge?

StarShapedWindow · 19/11/2021 14:39

DD is 9 and has declared that a fridge is what she wants for Christmas. She won’t tell my why - she says “you’ll see” which I won’t because I’m not buying her a fridge (not even a mini one).

She watches lots of Tick Tock reels especially focusing on crystals - does anyone have a DD or DS they could ask - I’m sure it’s something she’s seen. If I know what it’s for I might be able to get something along the same lines…

@StarShapedWindow

I think they make quite a loud buzz which would be annoying for her at night and I think she’d fill it once and then never touch it agai
^^
My friend got her daughter one.
The first thing she did was complain about the noise abs didn't want it.

My middle son, when he was nine, always asked for a deep fat fryer for his personal use.

I thought he'd outgrow the idea but he asked for it every single year and every year I said, "Hell NO!"

He's 24 now and is finally leaving the nest at the beginning of the year.
Guess what he's getting for Christmas?
I'm finally making his dream come true!
Get him an air Fryer- just as good but MUCH easier to clean!

PetulantClerk · 20/11/2021 03:22

@me4real

Surely it's not safe to keep kitchen appliances in a badroom?!

@PetulantClerk How do all the hotel rooms, some of which I've heard had fridges, cope? Or all the tiny bedsits?

Good question!

I suspect hotels have to source commercial grade appliances, and that they have greater requirements for fire safety (e.g., sprinkler systems) and ventilation than residential properties. But I'm just guessing!

@StarShapedWindow

She’s keeping the reason for wanting it very close to her chest so a ‘sensible conversation’ is a bit tricky.

We do let them take snacks upstairs but they don’t take chilled snacks up - what snacks would need to be chilled - we have fruit, biscuits etc.

She doesn’t like fizzy drinks and we have a fab fully working fridge full of apple juice and all the drinks she likes - we don’t live in a mansion so easy to come down the stairs and help herself.

I won’t buy a fridge because we have one and I think it’s a waste of money.

I expect it might be to grow crystals I’ll ask her again when she’s home from school.

Most presents are a waste of money 😊
@OhMyCrump - the secrecy is worrying!
Got to say this was my main reaction too.

It seems a strange dynamic that your daughter is being so secretive about something and you come and post on mumsnet instead of trying to get the answer from her. She's only 9. Just tell her if she doesn't tell you the reason there is no way you are buying her a fridge.

fiasco2021111 · 20/11/2021 04:26

I'm betting a fridge for her beauty stuff. Face masks, any creams etc. My daughter 10 has asked for one and a mini washing machine (the ones you get little kids to play with) to clean her beauty blenders. Apparently it's the in thing at the moment.

@DyingForACuppa

I love the way people are glibly talking about the cheap cost of a mini fridge and completely ignoring the running costs!
They are not even 1p an hour. I have 1 fridge, one freezer, 1 laptop, a couple of iPads charging. The smart meter is reading 1p an hour.
GingerScallop · 20/11/2021 04:35

She should buy a whole minifridge just for bottled water? 🤨

verymiddleaged · 20/11/2021 04:36

My dc's mini fridge is very mini, it can run of a USB port, it is nothing like a hotel room fridge.
Running costs aren't high.

shiningcuckoo · 20/11/2021 04:39

Beauty fridge I think. My daughter wants one to keep her face creams cold. It's a thing I understand.

GingerScallop · 20/11/2021 04:40

yeah. The consumerism is a bit shocking. Threads like this are why I've lost hope on the climate crisis: It's on Tik Tok so get it or your child will be damaged for life!

overnightangel · 20/11/2021 04:58

@ThisIsStartingToBoreMe

I would imagine she means a mini fridge to keep snacks and drinks in her bedroom.

What's your reason for not buying her one?

Errrr … I’d assume so she doesn’t keep snacks and drinks in her bedroom 🤷🏻‍♀️ Confused

Gosh. "Cleaning beauty blenders", what a shame we live in a world where this is on 9/10 year old's radar :(
For those who don't have tiktok

8]]
Thanks, I've watched it but it seemed to cut off before anything interesting actually happened. Although the bit where she dribbled milkshake down the side of one of the bottles was pretty shocking.

On fridges and beauty products, I know people in hot countries sometimes keep them in the fridge or else things like lipstick melt into a sticky mess although that obviously doesn't apply in the UK.

At least it's not crystal growing. I thought about that after seeing Seizure by Roger Hirons and was surprised to see you could get copper sulphate etc on eBay. Not something you want a 9 YO to be dabbling with in her bedroom.

ViceLikeBlip · 20/11/2021 06:07

So many people talking about a "beauty fridge" as though that's a thing?? And for a nine year old?!

As for all the "why won't you just buy her one?" Maybe it's because parents don't have to buy their kids any old crap that they think they want? Buying extra random fridges when you already have one is a prime example of mindless consumerism. Not only do they use constant electricity, but they are extremely complicated and energy intensive to recycle.

rrhuth · 20/11/2021 06:31

@Garriet

Beauty products in a fridge…?

This is an entirely new concept to me and I’m middle aged.

Yeah, me too - environmentally it is shite to buy extra fridges to put beauty products in.
Yusanaim · 20/11/2021 06:39

Is this Gen Z - the ones who will save the planet or is she one of the ones who come after the ones who will save the planet. Hmm

She’s 9, why is everyone behaving as if she wants cool her stash of crack cocaine?

peanutbuttertoasty · 20/11/2021 07:15

Pretty shocking for the planet TBH. How many years until that fridge is shipped off to be burned or go to landfill? Just because of some stupid fad. Will probably break or be forgotten within a year

🤣 I was just coming on to say this. OP sounds almost frightened if her daughter.

My 7 year olds has asked for a chemistry set - I am confident she won’t use it to cook meth or weaponise a virus.

The horror on this thread is marvellous - I have really enjoyed it.

Surely kids ask for impractical stiff they don’t need for Christmas every year - lots of it ends up in landfill.

A mini fridge is not a gateway drug to cars and diamonds.

They are quite cheap in the grad scheme of things.

She sounds that a fun, witty kid. Get her the fridge just to reward the you’ll see comment. You aren’t going to find she is using it to store explosives

DancyNancy · 20/11/2021 08:01

Fire hazard in bedroom I would think I'd feel uncomfortable for that reason.

Also in the gentlest way...Tik Tok ....be careful. Our school had an expert on Internet safety give a talk to parents and it's is very f**ked up. The guy said the artificial intelligence they use in that app is one of the most complex he's seen. It was really eye opening and so leading

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 20/11/2021 08:42

@Mellowyellow222

you read my thoughts.
imagination overdrive here and lots of hand wringing and pearl clutching. it's quite funny

KurtWilde · 20/11/2021 08:49

Fire hazard in bedroom I would think I'd feel uncomfortable for that reason.

Any electrical appliance in a bedroom is a fire hazard. So no bedside lamps in your bedroom?

This thread has amused me. So much suspicion around why the DD might want a mini fridge when OP has already updated as to why, and it's nothing heinous Confused

SushiGo · 20/11/2021 08:49

I would say no because fridges are really difficult to get rid off once they're done with - full of nasty stuff that can't be recycled. So it's not appropriate as a novelty product that she'll get bored of quickly.

I wouldn't want my kids storing food in their rooms at this age anyway, too much temptation to have sweet things after they've done their teeth etc.
