Why does my DD want a fridge?

StarShapedWindow · 19/11/2021 14:39

DD is 9 and has declared that a fridge is what she wants for Christmas. She won’t tell my why - she says “you’ll see” which I won’t because I’m not buying her a fridge (not even a mini one).

She watches lots of Tick Tock reels especially focusing on crystals - does anyone have a DD or DS they could ask - I’m sure it’s something she’s seen. If I know what it’s for I might be able to get something along the same lines…

yeah, fire hazard....never mind all the fires caused by people charging their phones in bed. but a fridge?😱😱😱 run for your lives!!!!🔥🔥🔥

Innocenta · 20/11/2021 09:04

@ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba @KurtWilde I posted earlier in the thread about having bought two mini fridges - the first one just failed. The second one spectacularly failed by sparking and almost causing an electrical fire. It was in an occupied room, fortunately... or we could've lost our house.

They are genuinely a risk if you get a cheap 'beauty fridge' style. This is exactly what I did, and I never would again.

PicaK · 20/11/2021 09:27

Inspired by this thread - just ordered 1 for my daughter.

RoseMartha · 20/11/2021 09:35

I have a friend whose 13 yr wants one to store make up in as she has seen it on TT.

N4ish · 20/11/2021 09:41

9/10 year old girls with make up and beauty blenders? Incredibly depressing, no wonder childhood is so short these days.

KurtWilde · 20/11/2021 09:49

@Innocenta I got a travel mini fridge from Amazon, only holds 6 cans of pop so it's really dinky. Never had an issue with the ones I got for my older DC a few years back, but obviously there's always a chance. Same applies to any electrical appliance though! My phone charger went up in smoke a few months back. Luckily I was still awake and dealt with it.

grapewine · 20/11/2021 09:56

@GingerScallop

yeah. The consumerism is a bit shocking. Threads like this are why I've lost hope on the climate crisis: It's on Tik Tok so get it or your child will be damaged for life!
Yes, exactly this.

No 9 year old needs a fridge in their room.

alborana · 20/11/2021 09:57

No wonder there's an obesity crisis In this country if young kids are storing drinks and snacks in their bedrooms, in their own personal fridges. I'd be saying no too. A child doesn't need a fridge in their bedroom.

toomuchlaundry · 20/11/2021 10:50

@PicaK why were you inspired to buy one from this thread?

I am horrified not inspired by this thread. The wasteful consumerism, the complete disregard to the environment (fridges are notoriously difficult to recycle) and young children watching and being inspired by tik tok.

RubyFakeLips · 20/11/2021 10:55

Thread is like mn bingo.

I came back to say beauty fridges are more of a thing now with skincare fans (which has trickled down to kids), I always kept my nail varnish in the fridge. But now with the recommended ABC routine plus SPF, skincare is much more active and consequently less 'stable' than your old cold cream. If I'm spending £100 on vitamin C, I'm not going to allow it to deteriorate to the point of being useless at a quicker rate than I can use it.

Also, cryotherapeutic techniques are BIG. Translation, putting relatively cold things on your face is good for it.

Horrified?? Christ.

I feel old

toomuchlaundry · 20/11/2021 11:28

I think more people should be horrified that parents are letting children as young as 9 or younger to have unsupervised use of TikTok and then being influenced by it

I agree

Fridges are actually a fairly frequent cause of fires. I'm not sure what's so amusing that you feel the need to be sarcastic about it.
CSJobseeker · 20/11/2021 11:42

I would say no because fridges are really difficult to get rid off once they're done with - full of nasty stuff that can't be recycled. So it's not appropriate as a novelty product that she'll get bored of quickly.

Totally agree. The whole concept of 'novelty products' is wrong to start with (using finite resources for something that you will bin or tire of quickly is massively wasteful), but for something like a fridge to be treated as one is appalling.

Agree with this.

The concept of a “beauty fridge” is just so depressing, upholding the idea that for a woman to be of use/important to society they must pleasing to look at.

The fact that children have any concept of what a “beauty fridge” is just so sad.

notacooldad · 20/11/2021 12:10

Ds2 had a .I I fridge when he was around 9. We got free in a promotion.znd had no use for it ourselves. Hes only just got rid imof it at the age of 22.
As a kid he kept water and sometimes chocolate in. As a young adult he had the odd beer and still kept chocolate in it.
I always knew where to go for emergency chocolate buttons!

notacooldad · 20/11/2021 12:11

Oh heck. Just noticed the typos. My keypad us sticking!!!
Oops!

PurpleFlower1983 · 20/11/2021 12:30

I wanted that Coca Cola mini fridge as a kid, never got one, still bitter…

Sadik · 20/11/2021 12:34

"Pretty shocking for the planet TBH. How many years until that fridge is shipped off to be burned or go to landfill? Just because of some stupid fad. Will probably break or be forgotten within a year"

^^ This!

I'd worry less about TikTok (obviously lots of chats around social media important, but frankly they'll probably be on it round their friends houses if it's banned at home) or makeup (I'm 52, and experimenting with makeup was perfectly common when I was a pre-teen in the dark ages) and more about the planet being fucked by the time they grow up.

RobinPenguins · 20/11/2021 12:37

Fire hazard (especially cheap ones from Amazon) and absolutely terrible for the environment. I wouldn’t be getting one.

My takeaway from this thread is that I should film myself refilling the teabag and sugar caddies, then upload them to Youtube, as there's obviously a market ...

I think I need to change the direction of my career; there's a huge need for this kind of content.
