Why does my DD want a fridge?

StarShapedWindow · 19/11/2021 14:39

DD is 9 and has declared that a fridge is what she wants for Christmas. She won’t tell my why - she says “you’ll see” which I won’t because I’m not buying her a fridge (not even a mini one).

She watches lots of Tick Tock reels especially focusing on crystals - does anyone have a DD or DS they could ask - I’m sure it’s something she’s seen. If I know what it’s for I might be able to get something along the same lines…

@StarShapedWindow

HelplesslyHoping was right - it’s for neatly displaying mini drinks and food. Who knew?

I really love all your suggestions, thank you. I don’t really know why I’m not comfortable with a fridge in her bedroom. I think they make quite a loud buzz which would be annoying for her at night and I think she’d fill it once and then never touch it again.

I rather suspect that the idea is for you to keep filling it for her.

I don’t think a 9 year old wasn’t it for beauty products Confused

AntiHop · 19/11/2021 19:18

Sorry to be that poster - but you're letting your 9 year old have unsupervised access to tiktok?

PrincessPaws · 19/11/2021 19:32

But who is she expecting to supply the drinks and snacks for her mini fridge tik tok's?

Tigerwhocameforsupper · 19/11/2021 19:34
@OhMyCrump - the secrecy is worrying!
I would be worried that you know she is using tiktok but have no idea what she is watching on there. Use this as a warning that this time it’s some secrecy about a fridge, but next time could be worse!

Don’t worry, I just cross posted with you!
Nyfluff · 19/11/2021 19:48

OP have you not heard or seen about the content on tiktok? Not just the extremes like suicides but the other content that a child should be kept safe from.

Calee03 · 19/11/2021 19:57

Ds wanted a mini fridge last year aged 9. He liked the idea of putting snacks and drinks in his own fridge 😅 I did end up buying him one but it never got used and I sold on.

Acinaces · 19/11/2021 19:57

@Cas112

Acinaces

OP is asking about a fridge, not your judgment of Tik Tok

I doubt she would be asking for a mini-fridge is she was not using Tik-Tok Smile

To add, it was nothing to do with TikTok. He just wanted a mini fridge to keep his water cool! But like I said hardly got used!
NautaOcts · 19/11/2021 19:58

I wouldn’t let her watch tiktok at 9

Acinaces · 19/11/2021 19:58

@TrulyPistoff

*I imagine Tik Tok is the PROBLEM. I didn't realise other parents were keen on allowing their kids to spend so much time on apps like this?*

Yeah, and she probably didn’t realise grown women spent so much time on Mumsnet..

Well, we're all on here; that is an invalid argument.
TurquoiseBaubles · 19/11/2021 20:00

My son wanted one until he stayed in a friend's house where the humming kept him up all night. They seem to be surprisingly noisy.

Acinaces · 19/11/2021 20:02
@Acinaces - you can’t really say ‘so much time’ - she is out at various clubs and dance lessons for most of her time, although I’m sure we all do things others would disagree with.
You failed to mention she's attending so many extra-curricular activities; you did however mention she spends a lot of time on Tik-Tok.

How many of her friends have mini-fridges in their bedrooms?

MoneyConfused · 19/11/2021 20:10

It would be a no from me.

Clearly, the OP isn't concerned; she is more interested in the mini-fridge Smile

Looks like a mini fridge is the new ‘Sindy’s Horse’ or ‘Girl’s World’.
How times change 🤣🤣

Xmasbaby11 · 19/11/2021 20:16

My dd is 9 and I'd no way allow her a fridge in her room - in her case she's untrustworthy and would eat and drink all the snacks in one go!

I know which one of the two I prefer!
Vapeyvapevape · 19/11/2021 20:17

I have to brace myself when I perform my night time beauty regime slap Nivea on my face I can't imagine how cold it is when it's been in a fridge !

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 19/11/2021 20:19

I'm clearly getting old. I watched the video linked with a very puzzled look on my face. And I KonMari'd this whole house!

hedgehogger1 · 19/11/2021 20:21

I wouldn't buy her one either. Kids don't get stuff just because they want it

RobinPenguins · 19/11/2021 20:24

I was a beauty blogger for years in the early days and no one ever kept anything in the fridge. It was all stash organisation videos with those clear plastic Muji drawers and IKEA Alex drawers.

LadyCatStark · 19/11/2021 20:36

@NotMyCat why are those videos so satisfying??

DS (12) wanted one last year and luckily DH works with someone who used to work in the drinks trade so we got an awesome, cool branded one for free. To be fair it’s annoying as he always wants it stocking up!

CSJobseeker · 19/11/2021 20:37

@SmallPrawnEnergy

Not even bottled water? Bottled water as in reusable bottles I hope? Are people really still buying awful single use plastic bottles? Grim.
The idea of running a whole fridge just so you don't have to visit the kitchen to pick up your water is horrific isn't it? And I'm sure that poster did mean plastic bottles. This (when you multiply it across populations) is partly why the planet is utterly fucked.
