14 year old boy pain down below

I’m looking for advice really. My boy has groin pain after a bath tonight. He says he was fine before the bath and now has ball (testie) pain now. There doesn’t appear to be anything out of place but obviously not sure. We have asked and he says he hasn’t been kicked or accidentally hit by anything or anyone today at school.

we have contacted 111 awaiting a call back for their nurse or doctor. My mind is racing to wonder if the bath being a normal temperature has something to trigger it? He’s saying it’s just uncomfortable but also reports his calf is sore too? 🙈

we have a hot tub and he’s in and out of that all week with no issue. Any ideas please? TIA

Thanks for the update OP. I'm glad the testicle was saved and your son is doing ok. You aren't a bad mum at all! You asked advice, we all gave it and you followed that by going to A&E late at night. Yes, some posts will get random advice, but it was clear on this one- how many medically trained people are on MN 😉x

YoungWild · 04/05/2023 22:09

He has been asleep much of the day post surgery he has eaten a little but not wee'd much so they are keeping an eye on that. He was in terrible pain earlier but has now settled again.

I am so thankful he isn't embarrassed of his body and something I am proud of him for prior to this he didn't care he wasn't a shy boy but never did I think it was so important other than not being shy. We did teach him about checking his balls regularly in the shower and bath. We are thankful surgery was successful and the doctors have said they think it was twisting and untwisting plus rising up into his groin. I hope he will just sleep all night but I am going to stay and my husband will come and swap with me in the morning.

I am so grateful for the continued check ins. I hope it is okay I have PM messaged @MathsNervous & @Madamecastafiore about your experiences with your sons.

I will update again in the morning. It warms me people have gotten a pre-warning of what could happen with their sons.

Oh OP this must have been so stressful for you and your son. I hope he’s home soon and your all about to recoup a bit over the long weekend.

I am quite amazed though at how many people have had the surgery within an hour of arriving at A&E when I hear of women with ectopic pregnancies or even ovarian torsion (much less common than the male equivalent) often having their pain minimised and having to wait a very long time for doctors to get to the bottom of things.

I can't speak about female issues as described but DS was seen by GP early morning due to testicle pain, referred to hospital immediately and was operated on at 2pm..and I was very grateful (if rather unprepared!)

MathsIsFab · 04/05/2023 22:19

What the hell would we do without MN!!!

well done @YoungWild for sorting him out and most importantly for posting here !!

f*ck 111, I’m posting here in case of emergency from now on 😍

BabyST · 04/05/2023 22:21

MN is a wonderful place it really is! You sound like a wonderful mother to him! Sound like he can come to you what ever the issue and that's a true meaning its self!

111 can be really good but more often than not can fail due to the sheer demand but that doesn't help you!

Well I have told my sons today not to ignore any pain down there. I literally had no idea that this could happen and is fairly common it seems judging by the amount of mners whose DSs this has happened to.
When your DS is better you can tell him he has probably saved a lot of boys balls 😆 On second thoughts he'd probably be mortified you were discussing him on here so best not to mention it lol.

Mariposista · 04/05/2023 22:55

Gosh poor lad. What a relief he felt he could tell you, even though it involved such a private body part, and that he could get help quickly.

amoretti · 05/05/2023 00:12

My son had this happen two days before Christmas at 10pm. One minute he was fine, next minute he was in absolute agony.
His brother tried ringing 999 but no reply for 25 mins...then when he got a response, they said an ambulance would be four to five hours.
Thankfully neither my husband nor I had had a drink so we took him to hospital where he was rushed straight through, and they operated pretty much immediately.
Morphine didn't touch the pain either.
Testicle twisted 4 times and was going black.
It was saved

AlwaysTheGoodGirl · 05/05/2023 09:28

Like everyone else is saying here, thank you so much OP for highlighting this to all of us boy mums. Yes I had heard of this before, but this has really made me much more aware to look out for the signs and to tell my sons to also be aware. You've done a great job @YoungWild !! I hope he's much better today

BabyST · 05/05/2023 11:10

How is he doing @YoungWild

YoungWild · 06/05/2023 08:57

Sorry for the delayed update. He’s still in hospital he was unable to wee after surgery and when they scanned his bladder it was full. They put a catheter in and then took it back out. He has then since passed wee normally. We are staying in till at least Monday now

Oh no, poor boy. And poor you of course ☕️ 🍰 💐

HandsInTheCookieJar · 06/05/2023 10:04

I’m sorry to hear that your son and your family had to go through that! That sounds like a nightmare, so urgent as well I’d be terrified. My son has recently come to me to say he’s got a tight foreskin, he said that he’s been avoiding saying anything for a while because of the embarrassment which I can respect but it’s still important to tell a parent! 😕

SirVixofVixHall · 06/05/2023 10:10

Your poor son, he has been through a lot. I hope he is home again soon and recovered.

Username84 · 06/05/2023 14:04

Glad to hear he's doing better! I remember the relief of getting out after surgery, I practically skipped out the hospital. It's worth the wait 😊

YoungWild · 06/05/2023 18:52

Tonight he’s got a temperature of 39 so is feeling pretty rubbish. It’s like a never ending nightmare 😥

Maybe try a lukewarm bath?

MegaGengar · 06/05/2023 18:58

Poor kiddo. Hope he turns a corner and is feeling better soon.

BreatheFocusRelax · 06/05/2023 19:03

Oh no bless him & hugs to you!
Hopefully it comes down soon & you'll be allowed to come home soon xx

ThickSkinnedSoWhat · 06/05/2023 19:03

I had been thinking about your poor son. I'm pleased to see that, though he is admittedly still feeling a bit unwell, the overall outcome with corrective surgery has been successful. Wishing you and your family the best x

YoungWild · 06/05/2023 23:15

Thank you all. Sadly it really feels like it is a never ended struggle for him at the moment. I did honestly thing it would be the surgery and he would be better but not at the moment. He is thankfully asleep now but I don’t think he will sleep though the night. He’s got an infection most likely in the wound and had a wee issue earlier today which they have said is “post operative urine retention” apparently not very conman but can happen. I feel as if Mondays home date is looking far less likely. I’ll update in the morning again and I am so grateful for all the comments.

OP posts:
Username84 · 06/05/2023 23:35

Bless him. If he has an infection it's possible he'll be back in to surgery to get it cleared but they're so good at sorting that stuff and the drugs kick in so quickly.

Oblomov23 · 06/05/2023 23:40

Poor you. Poor him. Bless him. Please don't ever think that you are a bad mum. You did everything right. it's all just very unfortunate. At least he was operated on and hopefully his recovery will be very quick.

YoungWild · 07/05/2023 10:41

Morning from a very worn out mummy 😞 things having only continued to go down him for him. He’s had a terrible night woke up overnight with same level pain as before surgery. They did a scan of him which didn’t show anything but they also think he now has sepsis. They’ve moved him to high dependency ward with a few other kids but the nurse is just outside his room and they have been so amazing. The consultant is coming later to see him.
