Nipples and boobs hurt

Daniel wants to suck 24/7 but sleeps at the breast

obviously milk not in yet

Latch seems ok, although takes time as he thrashes his arms around - where the hell do they go?

Sorry, im so new to all this!

should say nipples and boobs hurt when he ISNT on, and when he is on it stings for 10 secs or so and then it just feels like he is a mini hoover - is that ok?!

It does hurt at first - I was surprised by this with my second!

He's getting the milk in by stimulating nipples.

Arms - one round your back I think, one just waving

He's stunning btw!

theUrbanDryad · 30/11/2007 15:55

have you got any Lansinoh? has anyone (bfc) checked the latch?

ime the arms go either side of the boob so his tummy is to yours!!

huuuuuge congrats btw!!

Columbia · 30/11/2007 15:56

Are you bunging his lower lip on first, then clamping his mouth on like it's hinged at the bottom lip?

LIZS · 30/11/2007 15:56

Congratulations !

Sounds like let-down when he feeds - good sign. Watch in case he si just sucking th enipple though rather htna taking a mouthful ! Can you wrap him in a sheet to keep arms in or use under arm hold so they are tucked to his sides ?

Columbia · 30/11/2007 15:57

Wilbur feeding hurt for a week or two. I didn;t recall it hurting with my first. It doesn't hurt now at all, really (6mo)

onelittlelion · 30/11/2007 15:57

Mine always hurt for first few seconds when started feeding which think was from the let down and milk making too. It did get a lot easier and a lot better so hope it does for you too!

sparklygothkat · 30/11/2007 15:57

i had to swaddle callum when first bf, as his arms were everywhere.

Lizzer · 30/11/2007 15:58

Hey JARM, just wanted to offer support but no real advice as he sounds like most newbies to me

Just watch your nips don't get too badly cracked like mine did last time, i've bought silverette this time round as its got great reviews and you don't need cream (but people swear by lanisoh too) you can get them from www.breastfeedingheaven.co.uk and the post is quite fast. I haven't used them yet as still a week to go so can't guarantee results msyelf, but maybe worth a look if nothing else?

Good luck

MrsRecycle · 30/11/2007 15:59

congrats - another vote for Lansinoh you must get some

monkeybird · 30/11/2007 16:01

Hi Jarm - have you just had the littl'un then?

Arms - common problem: options are: tuck the lower one in under your armpit or arm or round your back (depending on your own physiology!); or swaddle to keep out of way. The only problem with swaddling is they end up in front and so latching becomes difficult so a helpful BFN counsellor suggested a side swaddling technique which I found helpful at first. Take a big muslin, a thin cot sheet etc. Lay diagonally and fold the top corner down so you have a flat bit, above which the head goes when baby lies on it. Lie baby to one side of folded sheet - so that there's one short side and one long you should then have two corners either side of your baby. Take one corner and fold over one arm but then tuck it directly under the baby's back so arm is welded to the side. If it is the long side and it is long enough, pass it under baby and wrap round other arm. If not long enough just repeat on the other side and use the longer bit left over to generally wrap round and package up! Or summat like that - someone else might be able to give a more succint description or link...

Bit of stinging might go quickly. If not, check latch again and get help with it as damage done early can hurt. Good luck!

ProfYaffle · 30/11/2007 16:18

Congrats Jarm.
Tuck in arms. Make sure he's got as much of the surrounding boob in his mouth as you can shove in when he opens wide. This means the nipple isn't being sucked on and his gums sort of massage the brown bits (correct word gone right out of head here) which helps the milk let down.
I remember waking up on day 3 when the milk had come in and finding someone had stuck giant balls to my chest. Fisrt and last time I ever had cleavage

NAB3littlemonkeys · 30/11/2007 16:53

With my first it hurt like hell when he first latched on but then it was fine. My others didn't ever hurt as much.

theUrbanDryad · 30/11/2007 17:31

needmorecoffee - the word you're looking for is areola (i think that's how you spell it! )

JARM · 30/11/2007 17:59

Thanks guys.

Well he typically fell asleep just as i posted, and is still asleep now, so I had a little nap too.

Am about to have my tea and will then wake him for a feed as he has only had 10 mins since 1pm.

Will try swaddling to keep those wretched arms out the way! Struggling with getting him on, so he gets quite angry with me! Glad to hear the pain (or rather "uncomfortableness") is normal, so fingers crossed.

Have some mothercare nipple cream here, but it says only to apply twice a day and to wipe the breast before a feed..... think i need some of that special stuff you are all talking about!

Will go and add some more pics to my profile I think! He is just SO yummy! Boys are FAB!!!

JARM - you can get lansinoh or kamillosan on prescription from your GP

TigerFeet · 30/11/2007 18:37

re the stinging for 10 secs or so - I had this, I understand it is perfectly normal especially at first, something to do with the let down mechanism

sorry that's a bit vague, but hope it helps

he is yummy btw

bookthief · 30/11/2007 18:44

Congratulations JARM!!

Defininitely Lansinoh so you don't have to muck around with wiping it off before feeds.

Keep an eye on those nips - the damage that caused me problems for weeks was largely done in the first few days. Daniel shouldn't be rubbing the skin off so get the latch checked if they're looking chapped.

Go JARM! Go JARM! Rah rah rah!
