The England and Wales Stats for 2014 are out on Monday.

Gather here your name nerds and statistic fiends.

What are your predictions?

What will be the top girl/boy name for 2014
What has finally jumped the shark and is dropping like a stone
What will be the biggest riser
What is your prediction for the biggest surprise (riser or faller)
What do you think the new trend will be
What will be the daftest name on the list (remember there have to three children with the name to make the list)

My prediction is that the Daily Mail will run their usual scaremongering story about how Mohammed is rapidly taking over as one of the most common boys names!

Alisvolatpropiis · 14/08/2015 16:36

I think both Greta and Lara will have increased in popularity.

Based on my case study of 2 of each being born (that I know of) since last years list was released. One of them being my own baby.

squoosh · 14/08/2015 16:41

Ted. It will be all about Ted.

squoosh · 14/08/2015 16:41

And Reuben.

meglet · 14/08/2015 16:43

Mabel and Sebastian will do well.

RedToothBrush · 14/08/2015 16:47

I think you are right about Ted and Reuben.

I know about a zillion Theodores, Teddies and Teds born in the last year.
Arlo will still be going up. I think it will either peak in 2014 or 2015.

Violet is going places too.

OP posts:
Crumpet1 · 14/08/2015 16:52

Fred/Freddie is definitely on the up.

Alisvolatpropiis · 14/08/2015 17:07

Annabelle will have increased in popularity, as will Matilda.

Amelia and all the variant spellings will still be very popular, possibly a non-mover.

I know of a couple of Reuben's born recently.

BlueKarou · 14/08/2015 17:43

It'll be interesting to see how much Tabitha goes up; I've always wondered whether that's a recent MN phenomenon or whether it's actually as popular in real life. DarkGreener have shown it not really changing dramatically for the past 10 years; just hovering within 20 places either way of 200.

Ladypug · 14/08/2015 17:51

I think Isla will be top 5 for sure, I bump into at least one a day!

SerenavanderWoodsen · 14/08/2015 18:00

Judging by the babies I've met, I would expect Imogen to climb higher. Also agree with the comments about Ted, there seem to be a lot of those around too. Amelia, Isabella, Ethan and Alex all seem to be pretty prevalent still. It will be interesting to see!

AuntieStella · 14/08/2015 18:01

I think Eva and Sophie (and the zillion closely similar names) will still be top for girls.

Benedict will be biggest riser for boys.

Queenbean · 14/08/2015 18:10

Olivia and Sophia will still be top

Jack, Harry and Oliver also

Then all sorts of North London names to enter - Mabel, Ethel etc

Lunastarfish · 14/08/2015 18:44

I think Sophia and Oliver will be on top.

Definitely agree about Ted/Teddy being high risers. Along with Matilda for girls.

On my fb Archie seems to be very popular - I'm interested to see where that is.

Runandbecome · 14/08/2015 20:02

Finlay must be moving up based on the number I've heard of recently

getbusyliving · 14/08/2015 20:47

Henry definitely on the rise

Violet and Penelope seem to be very popular so would expect them to go up the ranks

TremoloGreen · 14/08/2015 21:23

Hugo is a big riser - I know three under a year old
Agree with Mabel being a riser, and Martha and Tess

Surely time for a fall:
Evie
Isla
Mia

BarryGoosey · 14/08/2015 21:27

Sienna will be top 10. So many Siennas!!

Bunnyjo · 14/08/2015 21:43

Boys' names:
I think that Sebastian and Reuben will be very popular and may break into the top 20. As for top 10, I think Jack and Harry might drop a few places and that Oscar might be the biggest riser as it rose 10 places from 2012-2013. Then again, George may also see a huge rise.

Girls' names:
I think Mia is going to be the name that drops like a stone and Jessica might fall out of the top 10. I expect Isla or Ava to be pretty close to top of the list.

As for oddest name, I think that the influence on that will continue to be Game of Thrones.

AdorabeezleWinterpop · 14/08/2015 21:47

Henry will be right near the top

marshmallowpies · 14/08/2015 21:49

Trying to remember 2014 babies names from my friends - Ella, Freddie, Edward, Elodie are the ones I can think of.

Based on 2013 babies Oscar is REALLY popular - at one point it looked like there would be 4 Oscars at DD1's nursery, plus a Mae and a Maya. Just needs a Mia to complete the set...

DuhNuh · 14/08/2015 21:56

There'll surely be a big rise for Anna and Elsa too.

Agree with Reuben, Isla, Ted and its variants, Sophie. Isabelle and its variants is still popular here as are Eva, Ava and Edie.

Noah I think will be a big riser.

Maybe Albie as a surprise riser: I know a few of them.

I think there'll be a trend for the less obvious old man/lady names. We've had the flower names for girls and lots of George, Stanley etc type names for boys, but I think we'll see more of the Ernest, Eric, Mabel and Jean sorts of names.

DuhNuh · 14/08/2015 21:58

Oh and Elsie will be a huge riser I predict!

SmugairleRoin · 14/08/2015 22:25

Curious to know whether Ottilie, Elijah, Octavia, Romilly, Ophelia, Barnaby etc will rise or is it just an MN trend that doesn't always happen in real life. I don't know a single one!

AlfieandAnnieRose · 14/08/2015 22:30

I think George is going to be right there at the top. Archie another one on the increase.

Daftest name on there? Bunny will be one of them!
