The England and Wales Stats for 2014 are out on Monday.

Gather here your name nerds and statistic fiends.

What are your predictions?

What will be the top girl/boy name for 2014
What has finally jumped the shark and is dropping like a stone
What will be the biggest riser
What is your prediction for the biggest surprise (riser or faller)
What do you think the new trend will be
What will be the daftest name on the list (remember there have to three children with the name to make the list)

Haha Seren. I hadn't even thought of that.

I really thought there would be some people out there that love Tea that much!!

My dd's is number 1, oh well I love it and it suits her, I didn't pick it as it was a popular name Smile

VenusVanDamme · 17/08/2015 15:26

Interesting - thanks for links. DS name not in top 100, we're Scottish though and it's in the 60s on that list. Also interesting to see Finley is much more popular than Finlay in England & Wales, it's the opposite here.

Alisvolatpropiis · 17/08/2015 15:27

5691 - KC.

Ffs.

FATEdestiny · 17/08/2015 15:34

Hi Red. I remember you saying you were a name buff. Where on the list is your 2014 DS's name?

My 2014 DDs name is between 100-150.

I always aim for outside of Top 100. My two sons have names between 150-200 for their birth year. Just inside of the Top 100 (in the 90s though) for eldest DD.

FATEdestiny · 17/08/2015 15:36

I know a KC Alisvolatpropiis. She's a young teenager, not a baby.

ThomasRichard · 17/08/2015 15:37

3 boys called Rogue?!

DS's name is well down in the 500's and DD's is outside the top 100 but a more popular spelling is in there. Not too high though.

4 girls were named Rut. I have no words.

Ha it does look pretty bad when you look at it but I assume the parents of these four are Spanish. It's their verision of Ruth and is pronounced more like Root.

SerenavanderWoodsen · 17/08/2015 15:46

Well I suppose there have been Chardonnays etc so why not Teas?Brew. Appletiser is my drink of choice actually, so it's a shame I'm not planning any more...

NotMyChashkaChai · 17/08/2015 15:46

Or Swedish Sieststa. Rut is also the Swedish form of Ruth also pronounced Root!

RedToothBrush · 17/08/2015 15:51

FATE DS is right at the bottom. He is one of three. I am very happy. We wanted him to be very different but also on trend too. I am not disappointed with him not being unique. There have been other people with his exact name in the past which we were aware of. This is the first time the name has made the list since 1996 (before that I'm not sure. I'd have to sift through the GRO records and I can't be bothered tbh).

Closely related names to his (not spelt differently but from the same family) have seen big rises from 2013 which is kind of what I was aiming for. Plus the name has special meaning for us anyway. I do expect a few more in coming years, though I doubt it will hit the heady heights of the top 1000.

I think of all the parents who have called their son Loki, thinking it will be really out there only for there to be another 73 out there in the same year alone.

ThomasRichard - no its three GIRLS called Rogue.

Second thoughts. I think I feel quite sorry for the other parents of my DS's namesakes! I bet they thought they were being dead clever too.

If I'm honest I am surprised there weren't a couple more as it has been suggested by a few naming sites.

Just thought I had spotted 9 children called Labiah, but thankfully I mis-read it and the name is actually Laibah.

MrsAukerman · 17/08/2015 16:46

How do I see the whole list? I want to see where ds is.

MrsJamin · 17/08/2015 16:57

31 girls were given the name Isis???

Just coming back to applaud myself for calling the rise of Harper Grin

StAlphonsosPancakeBreakfast · 17/08/2015 17:07

Fuckweasel yes, that made me wince horribly.

Do any of you name experts know if you can get a breakdown by region? I can see births by usual residence, but not linked by name. Currently expecting DC1 and our chosen names are Cornish - currently with 41 uses for the girl's name and 20 for the boy's, I'd be so curious to see if any of them are outside Cornwall!

neddle · 17/08/2015 17:14

StAlph My hv has a daughter called Zenara as they used to live near there - quite a nice name I though and probably quite localised.

StAlphonsosPancakeBreakfast · 17/08/2015 17:17

Oh, that is quite nice! Yes, there's no shortage of Z names down here. Grin

RedToothBrush · 17/08/2015 17:19

StAlphonsos

The stats only are broken down into the top ten by region.

The best you could do to see how a Cornish name worked would be to do something like use a family history website and search for a first name by the last year available (currently 2006). It would come back with a list of where children with that name were born. Obviously that's 8 years older than this list, but I do think it could give you a feel for how much it travelled outside the region (I think in the 8 years if anything names are more likely to be less rather than more regionalised).

(More than willing to do the above for you, if you wanted to by PM).

3 boys and 8 girls called Rogue AFAICS.

StAlphonsosPancakeBreakfast · 17/08/2015 17:30

Ah, thank you Red! I think that is a very good idea - I quite fancy digging into it a bit more in terms of the history of the names and where they've come from over the years. DP is a bit of a genealogy buff, so you know what, I think this can be his new project. Grin
