The England and Wales Stats for 2014 are out on Monday.

Gather here your name nerds and statistic fiends.

What are your predictions?

What will be the top girl/boy name for 2014
What has finally jumped the shark and is dropping like a stone
What will be the biggest riser
What is your prediction for the biggest surprise (riser or faller)
What do you think the new trend will be
What will be the daftest name on the list (remember there have to three children with the name to make the list)

I think Timofey is a Russian spelling.

ArtisanPopcorn · 17/08/2015 12:23

Sounds like a rolecall for my daughters nursery!

WitchofScots · 17/08/2015 12:37

Both the names that I used are really low, that doesn't surprise me as both are the only child with their name in their school.

fruitpastille · 17/08/2015 12:51

My DD has first and middle names consecutive on the list - outside top 100 but I would say classic.

I notice Charlie top 5 but Charles much less popular - does the combined spelling count things like that?

NotAllThoseWhoWanderAreLost · 17/08/2015 12:51

Does that really mean that 6 poor babies were named Bane?? As in 'a person or thing that ruins or spoils'/'death, destruction' Confused And Eros, why, just why?

Legend, Marvellous, Cloud, Princewill, Talon, Nimrod fgs! Confused I cannot fathom what would possess anyone to make their child go through life with a name like those. Do they think they're naming a porn star or a Gladiator?

StAlphonsosPancakeBreakfast · 17/08/2015 13:07

Most past their prime having fallen more than 20 places in the last ten years are; Luke, Alex, Louis, Nathan, Lewis, Robert, Finlay, Matthew, Aaron, Liam, Ryan, Connor, Jamie, Owen, Callum

Cripes, this is basically a list of my male first year undergraduate students - repeat each one by four and that's 90% of the chaps in the class accounted for. Grin

Gileswithachainsaw · 17/08/2015 13:10

8 Osama? Shock

SmugairleRoin · 17/08/2015 13:11

I actually like Marvellous as a name - I'm assuming it's from the African community where names like Blessing are often used? It's a nice idea, naming your child something that you hope for their future.

WitchofScots · 17/08/2015 13:20

If you called your child Marvellous then you could play Marvellous by the Lightning Seeds at their birthday parties Grin - I love that song.

neddle · 17/08/2015 13:22

My dd2 was born last august and her name doesn't appear on the list, so she's either the only one or one of two.
Found her name in a name book and thought it was pretty fabulous. My other kids names are fairly low down the lists too, 2 of my boys' names are around 70ish used last year, the other only 13. My dd1 finally made the top 100 though, but only just - she's 13 so maybe her name will rise even more.

Tangoandcreditcards · 17/08/2015 13:23

Vindicated on boys - not on girls.

DS's name is amongst the 'big risers' (he was born in 2014). DC2 is pending later in 2015 but our names for both genders are way way down (350 odd for boy and 1000 odd for girl).

Interesting that there is a lot more variety in girls' names than boys' (7437 vs 6035 names used)

But considerably more boys born (306 668 vs 332 184)

I chose the section from both the boys and the girls for talking points more than anything else. There are loads more I could have picked up. (I avoided spellings really apart from those Timothy ones as they are particularly ones which are going to get picked up on living in the UK) I think perhaps more goes for girls than boys. But girls can be more marmite.

Some of them I like, some I don't. I like the African naming of Blessing, Prosper, Fortune etc so I am a bit gutted that Awesome didn't make the list this year.

RedToothBrush · 17/08/2015 13:27

But considerably more boys born (306 668 vs 332 184)

Is that more boys born, or more boys made the list (in other words there are more girls with unique names as there has to be three with the same name to make the stats)

My daughter's name isn't in the top 100. I think I am hugely unusual for MN because I feel fairly disappointed by this! Why do people not like her name?! :(

AlfieandAnnieRose · 17/08/2015 13:31

Why are there only a few Belle's? It's an acceptable name, compared to say Honeysuckle!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 17/08/2015 13:32

Bit of fun here for anyone who likes quizzes. One quiz on the top 100 boys' names and one quiz on the top 100 girls' names.

[I don't think you need a Sporcle account to play but if you register (which is free and very easy) your scores get logged and you can rate quizzes and make comments. I am a Sporcle addict but these are not my quizzes, by the way!]

Tangoandcreditcards · 17/08/2015 13:36

toothbrush - my bad [crapstats face] I didn't realise there had to be at least 3 to make the list.

My basic assumption still holds true though, that there are many many more different names for girls than there are for boys. (maybe because more hyphenated names? or spelling variety? Or just general creativity? Smile

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 17/08/2015 13:41

Always interesting to look at these. My son's name holds steady in the top 10 but we hardly ever meet anyone with his name - odd. My daughter is in the top 40, ditto. I'm not there at all, in spite of not infrequent predictions on MN that my name is due a revival (I blame the Iron Lady!). My husband's name isn't in the top 100 either but it's never been all that popular.

RedToothBrush · 17/08/2015 14:20

Gasp, if your name is related to a much hated woman, then the shortened version is hanging around the 250mark at the moment.

Given that most of the top 100 girls names have climbed 150 or so places in 10 years, my suspicion is that the revival is about 10 years in the future rather than now.

That would fit more with it being popular in the 40s as 20s and 30s names are quite popular at the moment.

candykane25 · 17/08/2015 14:20

My 2yo dd's name has crept up again, firmly in the top 10. It wasn't top ten when we chose it.
Another one who does not know another child with the same name.
Of the lists above, are two middle names I would love to use if I suddenly had boy/girl twins - Nova and Elvis. If I had another (which I am not), the name would be Frankie, for a boy or girl.

FelixFelix · 17/08/2015 14:22

My dd's name is 400 odd down the list. I expected it to be higher as it's always suggested on MN!

TotallyAnonymousUsername · 17/08/2015 14:24

4 girls were named Rut. I have no words.

Queenbean · 17/08/2015 14:32

I wonder how many there would be if they grouped all the "Mai/May/Jai/Grace" hyphonated spellings in

Lexxi-Jai anyone? Milli-Mai?

NotMyChashkaChai · 17/08/2015 14:47

Phew! Only 23 babies with DD's name on the list and the shortened version which she goes by (which is sometimes given as a name in it's own right) is not on the list at all!

SerenavanderWoodsen · 17/08/2015 15:02

Ooooh interesting! Thanks for all those lists and links Red Smile
DD2's name (born 2014) has risen 10 places but is still well outside the top 10. Will be interested to see if we come across a lot more girls with DD2's name than DD1 - her name is still around the high 400's and we have never met another IRL.

I like the lists of unusual names. I was confused by Tea initially, thinking who would name their daughter after their favourite hot beverage. Then realised it's probably pn Tee ah Blush
