to think that Catholics shouldn't be Catholics if they find their leader so hateful?

Thread about a thread I'm afraid.

Lots of catholics seem to condemn the Pope for his views on homosexuals, women, condoms in Africa etc.

But he is the leader of their church, and was elected by other cardinals who must share his views, they knew he was extremly conservative when the voted for him.

Why do catholics carry on being catholic when they seem to disagree with so many things their church preaches?

Eh, because the church is not one man.

I don't like my parish priest but I still go to mass.

RockbirdandHerSpork · 04/02/2010 11:25

Hey, not keen on your current pope? Don't agree with everything he says? Why not throw away your culture, everything you grew up with, everything you consider yourself to be, the schools your dc will go to, the church and community you are part of? Easy peasy.

FFS what a stupid, ignorant op.

nickytwotimes · 04/02/2010 11:26

Exactly, ROckbird.

EleanoraBuntingCupcake · 04/02/2010 11:27

i agree. it's not that hard to leave teh church. its not like you are Amish Mennonite

RockbirdandHerSpork · 04/02/2010 11:29

Sorry, a touch stroppy there but there seem to be a spate of anti-Catholic dronings on here at the moment by people who have no understanding of the religion, yet see fit to make sweeping statements rather than actually ask a question.

TellMeWhatToDo · 04/02/2010 11:29

Slightlystressed why do you care? Are you just trying to get a reaction out of people? You come across as ignorant and offensive.

Are you hoping an anti-Catholic thread will ensue? Go away and do something more productive with your time.

Please folks, let's not give her the satisfaction of posting replies.

slightlystressed · 04/02/2010 11:30

Is it ignorant to ask a question?

And its not just the current pope is it? The last one was a conservative also. And is it just one man? He reached his post witht help of other high up cardinals in the church.

RockbirdandHerSpork · 04/02/2010 11:30

It is if it's part of who you are Eleanora. Ask a Jew to stop being Jewish, or a Muslim to stop being Muslim. It's not a golf club or the local gym.

EleanoraBuntingCupcake · 04/02/2010 11:31

the pope has be droning on with his anti-gay shite so i defend my right to drone back

nickytwotimes · 04/02/2010 11:31

It's not just church - it is a whole cuture and identity thing for a lot of people.

And he won't be pope forever anyway.

I am also sick of the catholic bashing that goes on. Change the record, eh?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/02/2010 11:31

Hear Hear Rockbird, well said.

EleanoraBuntingCupcake · 04/02/2010 11:31

ffs, part of who you are!!!!!!!

RockbirdandHerSpork · 04/02/2010 11:31

"to think that Catholics shouldn't be Catholics if they find their leader so hateful" isn't a question. Stupid Catholic sheep eh?

nickytwotimes · 04/02/2010 11:32

Most of us catholics drone back at him too, you know.
Don't have a go at all of us.

RockbirdandHerSpork · 04/02/2010 11:33

And that response Eleanora, is exactly why people who spout off about religion whilst not having a clue what they're talking about really ought to keep their traps shut for fear of looking very stupid.

slightlystressed · 04/02/2010 11:33

Im not anti any religion.

Its a genuine question as to why people still belong to a church when they dont seem to agree with some major issues of its high up officials.

I don't believe for one minute that this is something that genuinely interests you. And if you're not Catholic yourself, why bother even thinking ahout it? You clearly have anti-Catholic bias and want to start a rant and get lots of people to come on here and slag off Catholics. Get a life.

Eh, because the church is not one man.

That answers your question then. No more debate needed.

slightlystressed · 04/02/2010 11:35

Rockbird "Why do catholics carry on being catholic when they seem to disagree with so many things their church preaches?"

Is how I ended the OP, that is a question. If you think Im so ignorant why not answer me and educate me.

OP posts:
Blu · 04/02/2010 11:35

Rockbird - you could have explained that in a constructive way that enabled people to understand that.

It's an intereting question to ask - people may be interested in considered answers, that would actually challenge the anti-catholic feeling engendered by Ratzinger, which would be helpful especially as so many people who are not catholic are indirectly affected by the immense and far-reaching power and effect of the his beliefs.

WhoIsAsking · 04/02/2010 11:36

What a stupid post.

I can't type what I want to say with any lucidity, so I'm hoping someone will amble along in a minute and rearrange the following words into some kind of coherent argument. Would you say the same thing about the C of E if the Queen said something you didn't agree with?

FFS.

(Oh, I'm not even a catholic and I find this sort of shit offensive)

nickytwotimes · 04/02/2010 11:37

We still belong to it because we believe in the faith aspects of it.

And personally, yes, I do struggle with a lot of the crap the church spouts. The church needs to stop being obsessed with sexuality and matters relating to sex/reproduction and concentrate more on the social justice side of things it does so well.

But leave my culture, my community, a huge part of my identity? Of course I have considered it, but it would be like losing a big part of me and I can't do that.

EleanoraBuntingCupcake · 04/02/2010 11:37

the pope has a v. negative influence across the world. it makes me cross and i find the catholic faith ridiculous.

Kaloki · 04/02/2010 11:37

Despite really not liking Catholicism, I don't think anyone should abandon their faith because of one idiot man.

If he invented the religion then fine, but he didn't, and despite being he pope he doesn't actually get to dictate what all Catholics believe. Some idiots will follow exactly what he says, but then for people like that they were going to have those views anyway, and a more sensible pope wouldn't change that.
