Thread about a thread I'm afraid.

Lots of catholics seem to condemn the Pope for his views on homosexuals, women, condoms in Africa etc.

But he is the leader of their church, and was elected by other cardinals who must share his views, they knew he was extremly conservative when the voted for him.

Why do catholics carry on being catholic when they seem to disagree with so many things their church preaches?

x post shaun

FreddoBaggyMac · 04/02/2010 12:41

Onagar - OO that makes me angry - it is NOT a 'particular catholic belief' - it is the right to life!!!! a thousand times more important than any other belief.
And I say again, if you are not prolife you should not call yourself a Catholic.
Sorry as this thread has gone a bit all over the place now!

onagar · 04/02/2010 12:41

To anyone supporting any organization that encourages things considered illegal and immoral in this country. Either stop supporting them or get used to being despised for it.

BrahmsThirdRacket · 04/02/2010 12:41

I don't understand it when people say 'he's only one man'. How many previous popes have had more reasonable views on homosexuality, women, contraception etc.? None. And also, whoever asked whether C of E members would stop being C of E because of something the queen said - it's a bit different, because she isn't chosen by the members of her faith ; it's hereditary.

doesntplaywellwithothers · 04/02/2010 12:41

the US has its fair share of nut jobs from all major religions...not just catholics!

all i said is he would be eying up the altar boys! i wasn't pointing my finger at abusers and chortling.

WTF is wrong with you! Are you sick in the head? Is there any evidence of the Pope ever commiting abuse? No. So where do you get off saying the most offensive thing possible!!!

itsmeolord · 04/02/2010 12:42

No of course it wouldn't Hully. It's not a part x system

onagar · 04/02/2010 12:43

yes freddo I'm agreeing with you that if you don't belief in certain things you are NOT catholic despite what building you go in on sundays.

EleanoraBuntingCupcake · 04/02/2010 12:43

all this po-faced posturing over a bloody joke.

Hullygully · 04/02/2010 12:45

The Pope was a Nazi though. That's not really that great, is it?

FreddoBaggyMac · 04/02/2010 12:46

yes but it's those 'certain things' that we're trying to define isn't it onagar? I would say being pro-life is pretty high up there wheras issues such as homosexuality are way down at the bottom.

onagar · 04/02/2010 12:46

StrictlyKatty, See I agree with you too. There is no evidence to suggest that the pope has ever abused children.

Only aided those who have, to carry on doing so and to prevent them being arrested.

I am a cradle Catholic, attended Catholic Schools and University, was Coordinator of R.E. in a Catholic Primary school, attend Church and send my children to a Catholic school.

I am NOT CofE I am Catholic but I defend any woman's right to terminate a pregnancy which threatens her life or mental health.

StrictlyKatty · 04/02/2010 12:47

Seriously Eleanora you have just made me the most angry I have ever been on MN.

Would you like it if people said you abused children with NO EVIDENCE at all?

Would you like it if your DH was a male teacher and a pupil made up that he had abused her and everyone thought it was ok to joke about it?

Would you like it if you had been abused and some sicko likened it to 'looking up an alter boys frock'

NO! I imagine you wouldn't. The comments you are making are slander and disgusting

Mmmango · 04/02/2010 12:47

you need to get out more

StrictlyKatty · 04/02/2010 12:49

Eleanora For the last time.

ABUSE IS NEVER A JOKE. It should never be laughed at, joked about of said in vain. It is a serious matter and all normal people know it's off limits to koke about children being abused.

Get a grip on yourself.

onagar · 04/02/2010 12:49

Freddo, I'm not trying to define anything. I just said mildly that if what distinguishes catholics from other Christians is certain specific beliefs than surely those who don't share those beliefs are not catholic. And I was pleased to see that you agreed with the principle.

Each catholic will have to work out where they stand without you are I telling them which beliefs those are.

JohnnyTwoHats · 04/02/2010 12:50

The Pope is the leader of Roman Catholicism, so that is what we are talking about.

itsmeolord · 04/02/2010 12:50

HullyGully - and that makes the entire catholic population Nazi supporting does it?
We don't condemn the entire German population.

I really don't understand the point of your statement.

Hullygully · 04/02/2010 12:50

This sort of thing makes me very perplexed.

Breathe, Strictly. People have always and always will make inappropriate jokes. It is a coping mechanism for humans to enable them to continue living in this vale of tears. Don't take it personally.

JohnnyTwoHats · 04/02/2010 12:51

Itsmeolord- some small minded bigots do ;)
