to think that Catholics shouldn't be Catholics if they find their leader so hateful?

Thread about a thread I'm afraid.

Lots of catholics seem to condemn the Pope for his views on homosexuals, women, condoms in Africa etc.

But he is the leader of their church, and was elected by other cardinals who must share his views, they knew he was extremly conservative when the voted for him.

Why do catholics carry on being catholic when they seem to disagree with so many things their church preaches?

I'll tell you one thing eleanora I'm very anti people who think abuse jokes are ok. I have NEVER met a Catholic who would have made the comment you made. Never in a million years.

Hullygully · 04/02/2010 12:33

If you kill an "abortion doctor," do you go to heaven when you die?

Mmmango · 04/02/2010 12:33

I'm always up for pope-bashing, vile man, but I think it's weird that people who aren't Catholic always come on mn and try to tell Catholics that they can't be Catholic unless they agree with x or believe in y. Surely it's up to Catholics to decide what consitutes Catholic faith?

And the only Catholic I've ever come across who agrees with the pope on the gay-bashing/ misogyny etc is daftpunk.

EleanoraBuntingCupcake · 04/02/2010 12:33

really! where do you hang out, humourless catholics r'us?

onagar · 04/02/2010 12:34

Both Freddo and Strictlykitty say that if you don't believe in the Catholic basics then you are not a Catholic.

Well that's what I've been saying. So why are all those who don't think god stands behind the pope and don't believe they have to avoid gays etc etc still calling themselves Catholic?

By doing so it's like you are wearing a badge saying the pope and his true followers are right in what they say.

Why can't you be just Christian.

JohnnyTwoHats · 04/02/2010 12:34

That's what I'm saying, Hully. The church does not teach Utilitarianism (ie the greatest good for the greatest number). Which is presumably the thinking behind 'kill the man who kills lots of babies'.

But lets get that straight, that is not Catholic teaching.

FreddoBaggyMac · 04/02/2010 12:34

Can I answer Eleanor as another Catholic? Contraception and sex before marriage I am completely with the church. I admit that contraception is a difficult issue in some other countries, but in the context of where I live (Britain) I am completely with the churches views. Homosexuality is a more difficult issue, I am not homosexual myself and i do not see it as my role to judge anyone else so it's not something I've really had to contend with in terms of classifying it as right or wrong.

Erm I didnt mean for this thread to go this way at all.

Im sorry.

StrictlyKatty · 04/02/2010 12:36

No. I hang out at 'Child abuse is not a laughing matter r us'

I cannot believe anyone would think it was. Would you make jokes like that to someone who's step Father had abused them, or a teacher at school or do you save the sick sick comments for Catholics?

Thelmapeace · 04/02/2010 12:36

I am Catholic. I am Pro-Choice.

Excommunicate me!

EleanoraBuntingCupcake · 04/02/2010 12:36

never mind slightly.

FreddoBaggyMac · 04/02/2010 12:36

Onagar i said if you are not prolife you're not a catholic (and it's true!) I didn't say anything about other teachings, which I don't see as so fundamental - although others may disagree.

EleanoraBuntingCupcake · 04/02/2010 12:37

all i said is he would be eying up the altar boys! i wasn't pointing my finger at abusers and chortling.

RockbirdandHerSpork · 04/02/2010 12:37

I wouldn't have thought so Hully. Everyone responsible for their own sins. If someone else performs an abortion that's not going to reflect on me at the shiny big gates. But if I murdered someone I'd be heading south.

JohnnyTwoHats · 04/02/2010 12:37

Hully. see my post. All life is precious. So it would still be a mortal sin to kill the abortionist. Whether you go to heaven depends on whether you have truly repented, made penance and been absolved of your sin.

ShauntheSheep · 04/02/2010 12:38

Arent the abortion protestors in America generally part of the Extreme Evangelical movement rather than anything to do with the Catholic Church. So am unsure why they are being brougth into things anyway.

My understanding is that as a Catholic if you commit a sine you need to CONFESS the sin and REPENT of that sin and RECONCILE yourself both to god and the person against whom you sinned (at least that is what I was taught) hence the sacrement of Reconciliation.

onagar · 04/02/2010 12:38

Lol you picked a particular Catholic belief and said if they don't believe in that they are not catholic.

I agree with you and now you want to say "oh but only THAT belief?"

FreddoBaggyMac · 04/02/2010 12:38

Hully - sorry to ignore you! Killing anyone is against the catholic faith and two wrongs do not make a right. I would say that anyone who has killed another person and not repented would not go straight to heaven... but i could be completely wrong as it's not me who decides that

Hullygully · 04/02/2010 12:39

Thank you Rockbird.

Would it count in your favour that you had prevented possible future termination of life?

alana39 · 04/02/2010 12:39

Hully don't think so - but it's not normally the catholics who are the extreme religious nut brigade in the US is it? (prepared to be proved wrong on that one)

Hullygully · 04/02/2010 12:39

(Thanks others too)

RockbirdandHerSpork · 04/02/2010 12:39

"all i said is he would be eying up the altar boys!"

That's ok then Let's see what rumours we can start about you or your DP or your mother then. Or is it only ok to libel Catholics?

StrictlyKatty · 04/02/2010 12:40

Being prolife is so fundamental to Catholicism I fail to see how a person could be pro choice and still call themselves a Catholic of their own free will.

Eleanora I will assume you enjoy taking the piss out of child abuse and victims of it and therefore must have some serious issues and move on.
