to think my SIL is a "chav" for wanting to buy her wedding dress from BHS?

of course it's none of my business and im sure i should just mind my own but, really? BHS?

God, I would applaud her common sense in not going mad and wasting cash.
My mate is getting married next week and got one for £25 in Cheshire Oaks.
Brilliant.

jasper · 03/02/2009 23:34

You are of course joking?

About you thinking this is chavy?

brimfull · 03/02/2009 23:34

it's only a dress though

20 yrs ago I bought mine from Laura Ashley..it was dire mind you.

I would get married in normal dress if I did it again

ProfessorCalculus · 03/02/2009 23:34

What's the dress like? I don't agree with spending thousands on a wedding dress but BHS?

thumbwitch · 03/02/2009 23:36

I think you are being a bit of a snob and therefore YABU. If it is all she can afford then good on her for not taking out masses of credit to buy something that she shouldn't.

Some people get theirs from charity shops - is that beyond the pale as well?

brimfull · 03/02/2009 23:37

wedding dresses all look the same imo

moondog · 03/02/2009 23:39

Yes thry do, however nice.
And all weddings are the bloody smae too.

DungareesAndOranges · 03/02/2009 23:41

My whole wedding cost less than some of those dresses!

PlumBumMum · 03/02/2009 23:41

My best friend got hers there some year ago, it was beautiful and a quarter of what I paid for mine, wished I'd shopped round more and had more money for honeymoon

bunsen · 03/02/2009 23:42

They look pretty unoffensive and are a bargain. Spend more on a bit of jewellry that you might wear again or bank it. Good choice. My friend spent £3k on hers, I'd want my wedding to have cost that! Never understood the £20k party that everyone seems to fall for nowadays.

moondog · 03/02/2009 23:42

My weddding cost £60.
From choice.

TsarChasm · 03/02/2009 23:43

If she hadn't told you where it came from, honestly, would you have known?

Thunderduck · 03/02/2009 23:44

YABU. Why spend a lot on a dress that she'll never wear again?
And if she likes it that's all that matters.

MrsSeanBean · 03/02/2009 23:45

I got a (new, pure silk designer sample) dress from Oxfam. It was fab and cost under £200, a fraction of what it would have cost new. Tell SIL to get herself down to Oxfam: they have specialist bridal shops. She can get something really stunning for (probably) less than the BHS number.

bubblerock · 03/02/2009 23:51

Chav??? I wouldn't have thought a chav would have bought from BHS - isn't a typical chav into named brands and more likely to want a wag/celeb style wedding?

Nothing wrong with being a chav or shopping in BHS - you're being judgemental and I feel sorry for your SIL.

Qally · 03/02/2009 23:53

No. Chavs spend stupid money they don't have on designer labels. She just sounds too smart to fall for the wedding hype.

schneebly · 03/02/2009 23:53

YABU! Mine came from an ebay store and was made of polyester but hey it looked nice and cost less than my SIL paid for a dress to wear to my wedding! It is just a dress after all and maybe she has budget to consider - my whole wedding and honeymoon cost about £2000 which was as much as we could afford.

Mamazon · 03/02/2009 23:56

yeah chav isn't the right word. i dunno what is.

momey isn't an issue (they are rich but Db wouldn't worry about her spending say £300 on a dress)

I have yet to see the dress. she hasn't really looked around i don't think, just been on the high street and though "yeah that'll do"

I dunno. i figured i probably was BU but still, surely you want your dress to be special?

nickschick · 03/02/2009 23:57

you are a wanna be snob or a troll.

ProfessorCalculus · 03/02/2009 23:59

Mamazon's not a troll.

jasper · 04/02/2009 00:00

" I have yet to see the dress"
Sorry, now I am completely puzzled.

Why would you comment on a dress you had not seen?

I got my bridemaids' dresses from BHS
seconds

thumbwitch · 04/02/2009 00:01

each to their own though Mamazon - I wanted special shoes for my wedding and ended up finding them in Mr Shoes! (of all places) They didn't cost very much either but they were just what I wanted.

Sometimes money really isn't the point...

jasper · 04/02/2009 00:03

that red bridesmaid dress in the link ("alicia") is fab
