to think my SIL is a "chav" for wanting to buy her wedding dress from BHS?

YABU.

I spent £25 on my dress, a purple one from TKMaxx. I had a cheap registry office wedding, went to Frankie and Benny's for a meal with the family and then had a ceilidh at the weekend.

There's nothing wrong with spending a small amount of money on a wedding - I think that spending thousands on one day of your life is a bit obscene.

HecateQueenOfGhosts · 04/02/2009 09:15

Clicked to post YEEEEEES! But realise convo has moved on

I think it's sensible to not spend bucket loads on a party frock that you plan to never wear again! Some folks spend thousands, which I think is just plain balmy!

There you go, you can all pile on me now, with your tales of £20,000 dresses that were worth every penny. psst Mamazon - I'll keep em busy while you leg it....

Tortington · 04/02/2009 09:16

Leanr

opps Gateauunfortunate.

yes dear, counter the point.

JackBauer · 04/02/2009 09:17

My entire wedding, including all clothes and honeymoon was under £500.
My dress was a summer cocktail party dress for £10 in debenhams 'we will keep reducing this shit until you buy it' sale, in fact, I bought 2 in different sizes!

BHS isn't chavvy, it's 'old lady' clothes. APART from the bridal section which is actually really nice.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 04/02/2009 09:20

Frugal is chic!

Anyway, was reading an article that rated the BHS wedding dresses quite highly.

DogMa · 04/02/2009 09:21

Good on her Mamazon. They do all look the same half the time so why waste cash on a 'label'?

BHS - very good for childrens knickers and socks - yaaaaaay for BHS!

Gateau · 04/02/2009 09:24

"yes dear".
As someone else said on here, your patronising attitude doesn't work.
Now go and have an argument with yourself, custardo; I'm off to do something useful with my day.

Tortington · 04/02/2009 09:26

gosh, so angry!
have a nice day now

Poppycake · 04/02/2009 09:32

I go to BHS for dds' clothes fairly often (our town doesn't do much choice, but I'd probably try there anyway). DD1 went off to school in such a pretty little cardi this morning, she looked gorgeous, and not too uniformy

I don't get stuff for myself there, but sometime think some of the knitwear looks quite nice - just can't bring myself to shop in RL shops! And my ex bf swore by their boxers (Paxman take note).

As for wedding dresses - foolish waste of money, unless you're one of those weird people for whom spending £1000+ on a dress is a route to happiness, in which case I wouldn't deny it to you. But I'd think you were a bit bonkers

Clary · 04/02/2009 09:36

Qally is that you?

What a lovely pic ? you are so so pretty and I love your flowers (like a nice bright flower at a wedding). Dress is very classy too.

Where is that you got wed ? looks like Bristol?

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 04/02/2009 09:47

Ruby - did you kiss a frog? or have I got you mixed up with someone else?

CountessDracula · 04/02/2009 09:48

I think it is a great idea
Those dresses don't look any different to all the other boring strapless big skirted wedding dresses around atm to me

Agree with JackBauer, although BHS is considered to be a bit old womany, their wedding section is lovely.
I only went to one bridal shop, with my friend. Found two dresses I liked. My mum came and helped me chose which one. Job done.

WWhy do you need to 'shop around' ?
And if the dress looks nice, suits her, who cares where it is from, how much it costs.

Stretch no, just some laydee selling hers

bunged it in machine, washed up nice

purplemonkeydishwasher · 04/02/2009 09:55

I got my wedding dress in Debenhams. for about £200.

i truly believe people spend too much time (and money) on the wedding on not enough on the marriage.

Dropdeadfred · 04/02/2009 09:56

My wedding dress was everything i ever wanted...and I don;t think paying out money for your friends and family to have a fanastic day is wasteful. Each to their own...

Stretch you looked fantastic....my bridesmaids shoes came from bhs...they were lovely.

Mamazon · 04/02/2009 10:01

Tbh i didn't even know BHS did wedding dresses. Whenever i have dared step foot inside our local store it seems full of polyester sweaters and rather naff skirts that seem suited only to members of the WI.

chav isnt the right word, its wasn't when i posted but i just couldn't think of the word i did want ifswim.

my SIL is indeed a chav though - if we are going by the description given earlier.

Actually when i was first told she was getting the dress from BHS i said "is that because they do it in burberry nova check?"

Im sure the dress will look nice.
It's really not abotu how much she is spending on it at all. TBH i would have advised her to go to one of those Ebay shops where you send off your measurments and you get a fitted dress for under £100.
it is but a dress, of course.

its just BHS?
Maybe i am a snob.

I just know its certainly not what i would want for my own wedding.
surely she will be wearing the same dress as a thousand other women?

oh and - no im not a goody i am a total bitch. i hgave said it before. so far i have had 2 threads kick off so i must be on top form for some reason.
and thank you very much Custy and Buda, i heart you both too

GColdtimer · 04/02/2009 10:01

I think the issue is you don't like her. If she'd decided to spend a fortune on an original boutiquy number, I have a feeling you would be asking pretty much the same question tbh.

Mamazon · 04/02/2009 10:05

oh im not married - im far too much of a bitch to find a husband. they are all beneath me
