How would you feel if you’d just bought your first house with your husband and the Congratulations you bought a house card that you received from his parents said on the front “His house, her rules.”

AIBU: No problem with the card
AINBU: Twats

My friend said the same thing, although his parents gave them the house.

Saturdaysfairies · 02/11/2026 23:22

I would frame it and put it on the wall.

LibertyBustop · 02/11/2026 23:23

I wouldn't put that on display. And I’d explain why to my DH.

Dragonlady3 · 02/11/2026 23:23

I’d think it was a lame joke and forget about it unless there was massive backstory?

Whoops75 · 02/11/2026 23:24

Hate this old school shite.
It would really annoy me but I wouldn’t say anything, put the card in the bin.

Congrats on the house

puppyinapumpkinpatch · 02/11/2026 23:24

I'd fall somewhere in the middle and not be particularly happy about the card, but I'd probably roll my eyes, privately critique their abysmal sense of humour, and leave it at that. (Unless there's a backstory where they clearly disrespect you.)

Isittimeformynapyet · 02/11/2026 23:25

What a shit card.

It could be construed in multiple ways - none of them good.

bigsquid · 02/11/2026 23:25

I'd think that was probably all they had in their local village shop!

Also not so bad coming from his parents, imagine the other way round!

Bellyblueboy · 02/11/2026 23:28

I would have called it out when I opened the card - laugh and say it’s not 1953.

Call it out every single time - can’t abide this causal sexist nonsense.

The card assumes he has bought the house. Thats it’s exclusively his but the little woman bosses him around, despite not owning the house.

I think it’s pretty shit coming from either set of parents. Maybe worse if it’s his, do they see is has just his house? Or are they too stupid to not understand what the card means

OffTheMap · 02/11/2026 23:30

It would irritate the fuck out of me.

If I saw that card in a card shop I would bury it behind the cards least likely to be bought. Facing backwards

Can’t bear that ‘jocular’ sexist mind(less)set

But in RL at the ILs I would roll my eyes, put it in the recycling and clock the fact that they have at least one idiot gene.

Yes, it's old school shite isn't it. Like starting a joke with "I wouldn't say my mother-in-law's fat, but..."

I'm going back to the 70s/early 80s there.

WitchesBritches · 02/11/2026 23:30

Big fat marker pen, cross out his & write their, underline HER RULES 👍🏻job done 🤣

That's just joining in on a really shit joke.

Chaarlene · 02/11/2026 23:33

It's a stupid card, but if I broadly liked them, I would just roll my eyes and laugh and put it down to cock up, not conspiracy.

If they irritated me or I had an issue with them generally I'd probs be like 'twats'.

Isn't that the way these things usually go? We are more generous to those we like but tend not to give a free pass to those who have form.

Where do you stand?

Shamalamadungbeetle · 02/11/2026 23:41

@Chaarlene “Where do you stand?”

Twats 😂

I would be raging at that. Particularly if you both financially contributed to the house purchase

Shamalamadungbeetle · 02/11/2026 23:46

Not a massive backstory, but not the first shitty comment to be made of this nature.

They know we both work full time, but they don’t know my parents gave us half the money for the deposit. So actually more my house if you want to be like that about it.

They handed it to us so DH opened it, didn’t react and passed it to me. I said “Our house actually” and put it back in the envelope and left it on the side.

They obviously thought it was an hilarious card, so I hope they were disappointed to see that neither of us found it anywhere close to hilarious.

FinJut · 02/11/2026 23:46

Unless there was a back story I’d just think it was a funny card designed to make you laugh and roll your eyes.

That makes it bloody worse, that you contributed more. At least your husband wasn’t impressed either. He should tell them that your parents gave half the deposit.

Francestein · 02/11/2026 23:57

I would think they probably grew up watching sitcoms in the 60’s/70’s and they think that inane crap is funny. (Will always stand in defense of the The Good Life and To The Manor Born….) I would roll my eyes and let them live blandly ever after. If there’s more to the story, it would be yet another reason to see them infrequently.

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 03/11/2026 00:00

Cross out the 'his' and 'her'... write 'our' in black sharpie in front of both. Frame and hang by the entrance whenever ILs are coming round 🙌

BibbityBoppityTwo · 03/11/2026 00:03

Ugh, tedious joke. But if it were my in laws I probably wouldn’t bother bringing it up. They’re not receptive to being re-educated on these things. I certainly wouldn’t put it on display, though.

You would frame a card that belittles your financial contributions towards your home?

sittingonabeach · 03/11/2026 00:15

Why are cards like that still sold?
