How would you feel if you’d just bought your first house with your husband and the Congratulations you bought a house card that you received from his parents said on the front “His house, her rules.”

AIBU: No problem with the card
AINBU: Twats

Whatever happened to cards that just say "Congratulations on your new home"?
There is no need for cards that reference who owns what or who supposedly rules the roost, that is just crass and hugely unfunny.

Well, they're still around. Obviously.

Itiswhysofew · 03/11/2026 18:15

I'd be despairing of them. I don't think anyone I know would give such a card.

I’m sure it was their attempt at a joke, but I really don’t find it funny. Probably in part due to past remarks and behaviours.
I didn’t make a big deal of it though, just reacted exactly as I said in my OP

Where is the card from OP, I can’t find it anywhere?

Not sure sorry, it’s in my recycling bin now, which is on the pavement outside DH’s new house.
Why, did you want to buy it for someone you know? I’d advise against it, unless the people you’re buying for have got questionable ideas of humour.

I do t get it though. Can you explain why it’s funny? Did you laugh?

It’s not funny. It’s insulting.

Lemondrizzlesquash7 · Yesterday 02:01

I’d have a framed print made to hang on the wall saying “ our house our rules” and see if they notice it🤣

I doubt that there has ever been a joke that everyone has found funny - different people have different senses of humour and some people have no sense of humour at all. I personally don’t find the card funny, but I’m sure some people do. I certainly wouldn’t get offended by a nice gesture by my in laws, even if I didn’t find it amusing.

Yes but if you think that, when giving a card, its generally considered manners to pick a card that the recipients would find funny.
Nice not so subtle dig that the OP has no sense of humor because she didnt find a sexist shot at her funny 🙄

I'd think they were trying to be nice, actually, and make it clear that he should respect you and try to make you happy!
The happy wife, happy life thing. OK, happy spouse, happy house is fairer. But I would not let yourself get upset by a card. IT's not a great joke, but not worth being offended by. Presumably you like living with him, and they made and brought him up, so they can't be that bad. Hopefully.

so where does 'his house' fit in to making her happy? Its negating her equal contribution.

Agree, plus clearly the ILs don’t respect OP, do they?

It's a joke card.

Are either of you upset at the reference to you being in charge?

They are making a poor joke. Stop being so touchy.

It’s more the reference to is being ‘his house’ that’s offensive, surely?

And one partner shouldn't be in charge either.

But I would ask posters who think this card is showing an empowered woman (whereas I see it more as saying it is a nagging woman to fit the rest of the narrative of the card) why is the 'his house' bit fine?

Not from his point of view

DH would find it offensive if his parents talked about his house rather than our house

Well he might not be offended by it, but surely he’d be a bit confused, as it’s not his house? It’s their house, jointly owned, of which the OP technically owns a slightly larger share than her husband.
But him being offended (or not) about the reference to her being in charge has absolutely no relevance to whether she is reasonable to be offended at the he reference to it being his house, obviously.

So they can both be offended by different or the same thing.

They likelihood of the parents wanting to cause an issue or offend anyone is remote

It's a bad joke. Poorly received.

Really not worth starting of in a new home with ill feeling and creating division IMO of course

Hankunamatata · Yesterday 22:56

Just a bad old sexist joke

Id roll my eyes
