To think people need to stop asking me did we win the lottery?!

Last year we bought a new house. We moved in together so sold two properties and bought one. We did up the house (built in wardrobes, new flooring, bathrooms etc etc) I then bought a new car about 6 months in and my DP bought a new car about a month ago. We are good with money! We earn well! No debt apart from our mortgage. We have ample savings(not that people know this) but literally every week SOMEONE, family, friends, colleagues, neighbours are asking if we won the lottery! It’s getting annoying tbh. Last night trick r treating we had 4 people comment in the new cars!
Cant people just be doing well?!!Cant people just be good with their money? Rant over!!

And even if we did I’m hardly going to say…yeah we did 🙄

It's just an expression! They don't mean it literally. Why not just laugh at it?

Voltorb · Yesterday 09:09

It's a lightheaded comment. You really don't have to take everything so seriously 😳.

ToKittyornottoKitty · Yesterday 09:11

It’s just a lighthearted comment. But yeah poor you, with your new home and new cars and lots of money having people comment on it. How dare they lightly acknowledge that you are doing well when you are showing it for all to see.

Seriously OP it’s not a big deal.

Because it’s not really funny, like maybe we did win the lotto. But who cares! To me It’s the same as saying “oh you must earn really well? What’s your monthly take home?”

Is this thread to show off your wealth?

spreadandsprinkles · Yesterday 09:13

Just say no we haven't won the lottery we just happen to have loads of money...that'll shut them up. I think they are really rude and I would be annoyed.

SquirrelSoShiny · Yesterday 09:13

Your username is at odds with your posts 😂 It's just a lighthearted remark because so many people are counting every penny at the minute. I'd probably joke back 'You can't take it with you!' or similar.

People needs homes and cars…it’s not showing off to have these things.

Edited

It’s really not the same 🤣🤣

CaribbeanCupcake · Yesterday 09:14

So did you win the lottery then?!

Yes of course!

You're absolutely right. I would be FUMING. I mean CHEEKY fucking BASTARDS. How dare they.

Or, y'know, not. Because it's really not that deep.

It's something people say when your spending habits obviously change. Someone said it to me last week when I paid for a Costa in work two days on the trot (rather than using the free stuff)...so it's not even reserved for big spends.

We bought a newish car and got the same comments. DH got a bit fed up of it because we are by no means wealthy and said he felt like saying "no, my mum died" - as that was literally the reason we could afford a decent car. But he realised the comments were meant lightly.
Would treat it lightly if I were you.

LlynTegid · Yesterday 09:15

I can understand how the same joke can become tedious.

Many people who have cars don't need them, and certainly almost about 99% of those with SUVs don't and could have a normal sized car.

Passaggressfedup · Yesterday 09:16

It's not the same. The lottery saying is a common expression people say when people suddenly spend a lot of money in one go.

They're not really asking you the question!

brownbootsandhats · Yesterday 09:16

you Are being over sensitive and you must know there is a huge difference between people needing and having homes and cars and people getting new everything all at once

the correct reply is something like “yeah we are jammy bastards arent we ! “

No one needs brand new cars or a massive house though.

LouisFuton · Yesterday 09:17

It's just small talk. People just ask about what they see. If things are different then they comment on it. It doesn't mean they actually care about it

Isitmyluckyday · Yesterday 09:20

Moving in together and selling two houses is a relatively quick way of becoming better off, perhaps your friends are thinking of this and having a joke about the lottery.

HappyLizard23 · Yesterday 09:17

I never said the house was massive

Pennyfan · Yesterday 09:21

Fgs, just count your blessings that you’re doing well and can afford nice things-many people can’t. Laugh it off, it’s just an expression, nothing to start complaining about.

Pennyfan · Yesterday 09:22

And in many countries, it’s not rude to ask someone’s salary. We are coy on the UK about income.

distinctpossibility · Yesterday 09:22

I'm always amazed by these threads that people live in such a whirlwind that they're meeting several people per day who comment on their wealth, weight loss, SAHP status, decision to stop drinking, family size or whatever. And these are not close friends, to whom you say shut up you wazzock it's just a Waitrose bag / well fitting pair of jeans / temporary choice because I didn't love my job anywayc/ glass of Schloer / split condom (delete as appropriate)

Despite this whirling social diary, the 'victim' of these remarks has time amongst their heady social diary to ruminate on the comments enough to start a thread

I know Mumsnet is not a monolith and the world is a big place but literally no one so wholly unrelated to me gives a fuck about my life.
