To think people need to stop asking me did we win the lottery?!

Last year we bought a new house. We moved in together so sold two properties and bought one. We did up the house (built in wardrobes, new flooring, bathrooms etc etc) I then bought a new car about 6 months in and my DP bought a new car about a month ago. We are good with money! We earn well! No debt apart from our mortgage. We have ample savings(not that people know this) but literally every week SOMEONE, family, friends, colleagues, neighbours are asking if we won the lottery! It’s getting annoying tbh. Last night trick r treating we had 4 people comment in the new cars!
Cant people just be doing well?!!Cant people just be good with their money? Rant over!!

As I said… I judge people who are in OPs position and can’t AFFORD decent cars.

That means they’re wasting their money on something else.

Choosing to get a cheap car is different.

Why is it wasting their money?

I drive an old Fiesta but spend around £10k+ a year on holidays. That’s my choice and I don’t see it as a waste of money.

Your title says it all really…

Wtf is that post 😂 only on mumsnet could someone come along and turn a stealth brag post into benefit bashing those in poverty.

Im not in poverty thanks, I can’t afford a new house, renovations and 2 new cars in the space of a year though… that doesn’t mean I’m in poverty and it certainly doesn’t mean I’m less smart than OP. Intelligence isn’t the only attribute to financial success, but if you were smarter you’d know that.

Absolutely never said it was. But it’s the start.

Mountainpika · Yesterday 11:04

Just say, "Do you remember that jewellery robbery from the museum last year?" and leave it at that.

FallingfortheUnderdog · Yesterday 11:04

spreadandsprinkles · Yesterday 09:13

Just say no we haven't won the lottery we just happen to have loads of money...that'll shut them up. I think they are really rude and I would be annoyed.

How is it rude?

Some posters on here must be exhausted from things themselves in knots looking for offence in every light hearted remark or small talk. No one is implying the OP is so crap at their job or useless with money that they couldn't possibly have saved up

megacat · Yesterday 11:04

I’m with you on this OP, I think most posters are just frothing at the fact you have bought nice things and have the gall to mention it on here.

I once had a neighbour make that comment when I bought a new car, I rent my house and I am a single parent and the comment annoyed me because it was like she couldn’t comprehend that I might have just worked hard and saved for the car what with me being a poor, it must have been a lucky win.

Its a nosy and jealous comment.

JasmineMac · Yesterday 11:08

Jings a new house AND not one but two cars!!!??? I've never encountered such wanton decadence. Did you win the lottery?

Loudnproud · Yesterday 11:10

ToKittyornottoKitty · Yesterday 11:00

So they ask if you’ve won the lottery? Seems odd don’t you think?

Yeah they do…and yes it is odd

People needs homes and cars…it’s not showing off to have these things.

Well no, but we rent our house and our cars are 15 and 17 years old. As is the case for lots of people.

Sherararara · Yesterday 11:04

Absolutely never said it was. But it’s the start.

You literally said people could have the same things as OP if they were ‘smarter and better at managing money’.

Managing money well is obviously a huge part of how OP can afford the things she has, it’s not because she’s smarter than those with less. Of course she will be smarter than some, less smart than others. People in poverty, or in fact anywhere below OP financially aren’t all a bit stupid, life is far more complicated than that.

Spidey66 · Yesterday 11:17

You really are overthinking this. It's hardly the same as asking someone their income. It's the sort of thing I'd say if someone booked a flash holiday or something.

HylianShroom · Yesterday 11:17

Wish I had your problems.

WildLeader · Yesterday 11:18

It’s just talk @Loudnproud

people seem to think they HAVE to say something, they seem to think they’re funny.

the best way is either to smile and nod, or style it out and say something like “oh no, nothing like that, had a big ‘win’ of crypto this week.”

Trillie · Yesterday 11:23

Humble bragging, how retro. I thought that went out with Boris Johnson.

And people own their house and have new or nearly new cars. As the case for lots
of people.

Ooh look a thread to show off how wealthy the op is!

Oooh a one percenter problem page, love it. This is what I’m putting up with right now:

We moved into a new house and there was no bidet in the supposedly luxury bathroom.

Our entrance gate keeps breaking.

The Coutts banking app is barely fit for purpose.

Our pool cover is manky and could do with being replaced, but hardly anyone in the UK supplies them so we’re stuck with it.

I ordered myself a lovely new Porsche but it’s going to take a year to arrive, and who knows if I’ll even still like metallic sky blue by then?

It has been nearly 11 years since anyone asked me if I’d won the lottery. I miss telling them, ‘in a way, yes, but in another more real way, no‘.

Honestly, fuck my life

🤣🤣🤣

Yes just say your crypto investments paid off. Then follow up with “Are you not in
crypto?”

I’d reply to that… oh no, I’m a hacker 😉😂

Plenty yes…funnily enough they don’t comment.

Monolith! Great word

I'm not sure it's the word @distinctpossibility meant to use though.

Petalperfect · Yesterday 11:38

It’s your choice how you spend it but it will draw attention. People are nosy and probably want to know how you did it. You could be honest and say x and z are great saving tips etc or just nod and smile. Choice is yours some millionaires are just that because they are careful and don’t spend it and no one would ever know. I would choose to give the same answer every time they will soon get bored.

GoodGirlFaith · Yesterday 11:39

I won the lottery a few years ago but not one person has ever asked me about it. I invested my winnings in a lovely new pair of socks but no-one noticed them. 😔

catabhaile · Yesterday 11:41

Loudnproud · Yesterday 09:12

Because it’s not really funny, like maybe we did win the lotto. But who cares! To me It’s the same as saying “oh you must earn really well? What’s your monthly take home?”

Edited

It really isn't like that at all
