To think people need to stop asking me did we win the lottery?!

Last year we bought a new house. We moved in together so sold two properties and bought one. We did up the house (built in wardrobes, new flooring, bathrooms etc etc) I then bought a new car about 6 months in and my DP bought a new car about a month ago. We are good with money! We earn well! No debt apart from our mortgage. We have ample savings(not that people know this) but literally every week SOMEONE, family, friends, colleagues, neighbours are asking if we won the lottery! It’s getting annoying tbh. Last night trick r treating we had 4 people comment in the new cars!
Cant people just be doing well?!!Cant people just be good with their money? Rant over!!

People needs homes and cars…it’s not showing off to have these things.

People don’t NEED what you have, obviously. You are doing well and have spent loads in a short amount of time and are obviously talking about it, otherwise people wouldn’t know about your wardrobes, floors, lack of debt etc. and 2 new cars outright in 6 months immediately after doing up a house is flashing the cash wether you like it or not. I cant imagine doing that well financially and then being annoyed at others for noticing me spending loads of money. It’s not a need it’s a choice, and good for you! Why shouldn’t you spend your money? But you live in a world with other people and commenting is not a big deal.

Can you not see that as problems and irritations go, it's top tier of a problem a lot of people would like to have?

I'm always amazed by these threads that people live in such a whirlwind that they're meeting several people per day who comment on their wealth, weight loss, SAHP status, decision to stop drinking, family size or whatever. And these are not close friends, to whom you say shut up you wazzock it's just a Waitrose bag / well fitting pair of jeans / temporary choice because I didn't love my job anywayc/ glass of Schloer / split condom (delete as appropriate)

Despite this whirling social diary, the 'victim' of these remarks has time amongst their heady social diary to ruminate on the comments enough to start a thread

I know Mumsnet is not a monolith and the world is a big place but literally no one so wholly unrelated to me gives a fuck about my life.

Edited

Monolith! Great word

I never said the house was massive

You’ve mentioned bathrooms, meaning two at minimum, so it’s not a two up two down.

Is this thread to show off your wealth?

Yep

Rainingasusual · Yesterday 09:26

It's a little "my streak is too juicy", here.

Anyway, it's social convention and something people mindlessly parrot when they see the evidence of large expenditure. They aren't literally asking. It's a human, vocal equivalent of dog sniffing each other.

Smartiepants79 · Yesterday 09:26

Oh good, another thing to add to the ever growing list of things we’re not allowed to say in case we inadvertently annoy someone.
It’s a light hearted piece of small talk. Get over it.

Well said. I’d imagine the families who have to choose between heating and food this winter would wish they had the ‘problem’ of people commenting on their wealth!

Stressedandgrey · Yesterday 09:27

Surely you can see they are just being nice...you've had the bathroom done and got a new car.... Not built a swimming pool and bought a villa in the med.

Skybluecoat · Yesterday 09:31

What other completely innocuous bits of small talk annoy you?

It must be very tiresome being so offended by passing comments like this.

IdleGossip · Yesterday 09:32

It's not lighthearted though - not always. I remember vividly when I was growing up that my mum's sister and her husband would always make wee digs like that at my parents "you can't hide money, can you?" and similar.

We were not rich, my parents were both teachers but they owned their house and aunt/uncle rented from the council. Aunt had got pregnant at 17, mum had completed school and gone on to college. It was an inverse snobbery thing, don't be getting too big for your boots, remember where you've come from, not for the likes of us.

Really toxic.

Sherararara · Yesterday 09:33

You aren’t wrong OP. It’s not “just an expression” or casual comment it’s envy and nosiness. Best answer to give is the one you said here. “No, we have good jobs and we’re really good with money”. They desperately want to hear you have indeed come into money in order to justify why you have these things and they do not. Last thing they want to hear is they could have them too if they were just smarter and better at managing money.

Didimum · Yesterday 09:33

Weird. We’ve done all these things and never been asked anything like that.

I doubt the trick or treaters noticing the nice new cars are that invested to be honest.

People in poverty are stupid and can’t manage money then 😒

‘Just smarter’ 🙄

Most people don’t own those things though.

ThePerfectStormBird · Yesterday 09:38

You did a lot of extravagant things in a short space of time. That normally indicates a sudden increase in wealth which fits with a lottery win. It’s not that deep.

coffeerevelsrule · Yesterday 09:38

We get it - you're loaded. Well done.

BitOutOfPractice · Yesterday 09:38

I’d just say “I did when I met Pete” (or whatever his name is!) or “I wish!” Or something equally lighthearted back. Honestly why are you being so touchy!

TroysMammy · Yesterday 09:40

Just tell them you robbed a bank as the odds are better than winning the lottery.

Velumental · Yesterday 09:41

Pahaha no we've ourselves almost bankrupt, baked beans for months after this 😂 would be the standard Irish response.

The OP has stated they have a mortgage so they're clearly not 'loaded'!

FirmSnake · Yesterday 09:43

People are merely commenting on your good fortune and nice things. Get over yourself.
