To think people need to stop asking me did we win the lottery?!

Last year we bought a new house. We moved in together so sold two properties and bought one. We did up the house (built in wardrobes, new flooring, bathrooms etc etc) I then bought a new car about 6 months in and my DP bought a new car about a month ago. We are good with money! We earn well! No debt apart from our mortgage. We have ample savings(not that people know this) but literally every week SOMEONE, family, friends, colleagues, neighbours are asking if we won the lottery! It’s getting annoying tbh. Last night trick r treating we had 4 people comment in the new cars!
Cant people just be doing well?!!Cant people just be good with their money? Rant over!!

I think it’s just an expression (and usually from people aged 40 and up because for us back in the day a brand new car was a sign of doing well or a lottery win) but reality is that majority of people nowadays with brand new cars have them on finance. 2 brand new cars in the drive isn’t a sign of doing well any more, they’re now a sign of massive consumer debt.

That’s funny because I’m 39 and DP is 41 😅

@Loudnproud
It's just a saying - particularly from older folks.
To be fair, you have bought 3 very expensive purchases in a relatively short amount of time.

Are they all a significant 'upgrade' to your previous house / cars?

This is the kind of thing I would say to my brother, he's minted and I assume good with money, typical DINKs. Him and his DH have a lovely house, a nice car and great holidays. Good on them. I don't mean any malice. He's going on 4 holidays next year

Last house was a 3 bed, this is a 4 bed. Not massive upgrades tbh, Just newer
We needed space for my two dc and office space also.

I know what you mean OP. It's coming from acquaintances and colleagues rather than friends, so it feels a bit like what they're really thinking is,
"How come YOU can afford this?" Like you couldn't possibly have done it without cheating somehow, because they haven't managed their finances well enough to do it themselves.
(I assume these are people on a similar income, not people who are genuinely having a hard time of it.)

Conspicuously spending your money on cars attracts comment! More than anything else.

Dh and I worked like crazy in our 20s and 30s so in our 40s we were comfortable. When my mum died we inherited enough to clear the £50k left on our mortgage and had since then spent our money on two nice cars, solar panels, holidays etc.

The ONLY thing people comment on is my dh’s flashy car. People assume it cost a fortune (it didn’t).

We bought it because dh loves cars, he’s always appreciated beautiful cars and why not live the dream if you can?

He doesn’t splash money around generally.
