To think people need to stop asking me did we win the lottery?!

Last year we bought a new house. We moved in together so sold two properties and bought one. We did up the house (built in wardrobes, new flooring, bathrooms etc etc) I then bought a new car about 6 months in and my DP bought a new car about a month ago. We are good with money! We earn well! No debt apart from our mortgage. We have ample savings(not that people know this) but literally every week SOMEONE, family, friends, colleagues, neighbours are asking if we won the lottery! It’s getting annoying tbh. Last night trick r treating we had 4 people comment in the new cars!
Cant people just be doing well?!!Cant people just be good with their money? Rant over!!

OP, you have been rather splashing the cash which of course is your right, but can hardly be surprised it has drawn comment.

New house fully fitted out and two new cars, does scream windfall if prior to this you were more modest in your means.

If you want to live without drawing comment, perhaps don't be so obvious that you have spent hundreds of thousands in a short period of time.

I wouldn't dream of commenting on such things but many people cannot help themselves.

You have drawn attention to yourself by your actions.

HPFA · Yesterday 10:12

and so I would judge you if you couldn’t afford decent cars.

You judge people who just want something cheap that goes from A to B?

Scottishskifun · Yesterday 10:14

I get what your saying OP generally it's a lightly veiled snide comment of how can YOU afford these things.

We had it recently with a newish car. The reality is we only replace cars when they need it so we save well, have a small mortgage and DH and I budget like we are still in entry level jobs when our salaries have risen in the 15 years together. The tight budget has helped especially when DH had a series of redundancies. We could afford a bigger house but don't want a bigger mortgage. We don't buy things just because and get most clothes from vinted (because I can get x4 the amount for the same cost as removing a tag).

I generally find there has been a shift in attitude and buy it now with people just because they want it - hence the rise in klana and unsecured debt. I see with my wider family who then usually comment they are skint, can't afford a bill then appear with a new iPhone, smart watch etc.

No one needs brand new cars or a massive house though.

And yet there are some people who have all this and more and will continue to do so

all the while there are some in another boat entirely

if people want a big house and new cars and can afford it, why not? Buying these cars supports jobs, buying these houses too. There’s no point in being jealous, it is what it is.

TheRealSmurfette · Yesterday 10:20

It’s rude to comment on weight and money… some people don’t seem to understand this. It’s embarrassing.

LondonLass2026 · Yesterday 10:21

You sound braggy.

People are just trying to make conversation.

Squidgoals · Yesterday 10:22

Oooh a one percenter problem page, love it. This is what I’m putting up with right now:

We moved into a new house and there was no bidet in the supposedly luxury bathroom.

Our entrance gate keeps breaking.

The Coutts banking app is barely fit for purpose.

Our pool cover is manky and could do with being replaced, but hardly anyone in the UK supplies them so we’re stuck with it.

I ordered myself a lovely new Porsche but it’s going to take a year to arrive, and who knows if I’ll even still like metallic sky blue by then?

It has been nearly 11 years since anyone asked me if I’d won the lottery. I miss telling them, ‘in a way, yes, but in another more real way, no‘.

Honestly, fuck my life

HorseandHeron · Yesterday 10:22

Say, 'No, we save hard." Or, "No, we earn well." Then people will think you are smug and avoid you. Problem solved Grin

StormKevin · Yesterday 10:23

Please advise where you live and your joint income so I can better judge whether I need to be jealous or not

Loudnproud · Yesterday 10:37

ConfusedSoShutUp · Yesterday 10:05

It may not be "odd" if the OP is constantly wanging on about the new house/cars/wardrobe etc, etc.

@Loudnproud are you sure they are not just saying it because they are bored of hearing about your purchases and want you to shut the fuck up?

Edited

No because I don’t talk about it tbh unprompted . Unless someone asks which people do.
colleague says to me, what are you doing this weekend? And I say oh I have to finish decorating the sitting room…or if someone says I’m painting my sitting room what colour have you painted yours and I would say we painted our colour etc etc…just normal conversation. Or if someone says oh how’s the house going? Then I will talk about how the house is going. But no, I don’t just walk up to people and start talking about my house in my car.

‘Just smarter’ 🙄

Yes smarter. What’s your grand plan for getting out of poverty?
Win the lottery? Not going to happen.
Government going to swoop in and make your life materially better? Not going to happen.
Marry someone with money? Could do, then come back on MN after a few years and mon about your empty life with money and get
accused of having too tight diamond shoes.
If you are in poverty the only person who is
going to change that is you. And you ain’t going to do it by being dumb. You need to make some smart changes. Start a business, train for a new career, go back to school, whatever. But they all involve you making some smart choices, stop blaming the system and everyone else, and accept it’s entirely on you.

Tink3rbell30 · Yesterday 10:48

What jobs do you do to afford all of that?!

Skybluecoat · Yesterday 10:49

HPFA · Yesterday 10:09

I had an old Fiesta that went over 200,000 miles and almost never failed to start.

The only reason I sold it was bits of the trimmings kept falling off and my daughter said it was getting embarrassing.

I'm really sad they've stopped making Fiestas!

My Fiesta is twelve years old and I intend to drive it until it absolutely dies. I love it so much, I will probably give up driving rather than drive something else!!

SylvanMoon · Yesterday 10:50

Count your blessings then, especially if your "big problem" is people commenting on your ability to live beyond their means. And if you have "won the lottery" and didn't want anyone to know about it, it's not really smart to have bought two new cars at the same time.

Skybluecoat · Yesterday 10:51

StiffAsAVicar · Yesterday 10:00

I get it OP

It’s a common phrase sure, but it almost feels as if they are suggesting your ‘success’ must be accidental as they don’t perceive you as a successful type of person.

But honestly, it says more about them, as they can never imagine themselves being financially successful without a lottery win, whereas you can and you are. Financially successful people wouldn’t ask if you won the lottery - they’d ask which business venture you’re in.

But that would actually be rude!!

Greenmouldycheese · Yesterday 10:51

Its just a lighthearted comment. Sounds like you came on here to brag about something fairly normal. Most people have houses, most people have nice cars etc. If you bought a fancy boat or something then I'd sort of get why you would would to brag a bit, but youve literally bought regular everyday things.

BillieWiper · Yesterday 10:53

Do you want sympathy?

I'm afraid it's in short supply. I'd say this is the dictionary definition of a first world problem.

Wtf is that post 😂 only on mumsnet could someone come along and turn a stealth brag post into benefit bashing those in poverty.

Im not in poverty thanks, I can’t afford a new house, renovations and 2 new cars in the space of a year though… that doesn’t mean I’m in poverty and it certainly doesn’t mean I’m less smart than OP. Intelligence isn’t the only attribute to financial success, but if you were smarter you’d know that.

So your colleagues ask how your renovations are going and then ask if you’ve won the lottery? Do your colleagues not also earn well?

CawsPobi · Yesterday 10:57

I gave out some Lindors to trick or treaters last night (matcha ones, they were vile!) and they asked if we were rich 😂

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · Yesterday 10:06

These people probably have a similar amount of money to you but just waste it.

Or possibly are simply less ostentatious about it?

How is OP being ostentatious?

She literally moved in with her DP - MNers do this all of the time.

And they’ve both bought new cars.

They’ve gone from having 1 income, to 2 and splitting the bills.
Plus they’ve sold their homes.

Loudnproud · Yesterday 10:58

ToKittyornottoKitty · Yesterday 10:56

So your colleagues ask how your renovations are going and then ask if you’ve won the lottery? Do your colleagues not also earn well?

They would earn somewhat similar…but they manage their money very differently.

Wah, I'm so wealthy and people are so envious of me. What can I do?
People are just not envying me enough at the weekend though. I'll start a thread on Mumsnet as well.

As I said… I judge people who are in OPs position and can’t AFFORD decent cars.

That means they’re wasting their money on something else.

Choosing to get a cheap car is different.
