Girls weekend potentially ruined

So im a mum of two (oldest 14) and have never ever left my kids to go away with friends, hardly ever go out. Me and 3 friends decided to book a weekend away for one of their birthdays. Friday-sunday abroad. We booked it a year ago and iv been so so excited to go. Now all my in laws live 8 hours away and father in law hasn't been well with substance abuse, has been going on for years and has gotten worse. Husband has turned round and said he might have to go there next week to help his family out, with it being 8 hours to get there he would be gone at least 3 days, last time was a week. I reminded him im going away and has said well you might need to sort out childcare for them...my family live 2 hours away so if he does go then im gna have to cancel my weekend away. I can't help but feel angry and disappointed. I never put myself first and finally decided to do something for myself and now I might not be able to go. I havent voiced any of this to him as I feel selfish for even thinking this as hes going through alot with his family. But there's always drama with his family as both his parents have struggled with addiction which is why we dont see them alot. He can't even go the following week to see them as we have booked a holiday for half term.

It has been going on for years and your husband chooses this weekend to be involved?

I would suspect this was deliberate to stop you going away.

whatisheupto · Today 22:55

You do know he's doing this on purpose don't you OP?
It would be wise to leave for your holiday a day or two earlier than planned, last minute, to avoid him buggering off first and leaving you stuck with the kids. Go to your friends house or a premier Inn.

Please, please go on your trip. He can sort childcare if he needs to.

its not potentially ruined, it’s ruined.

your husband did it

hettie · Today 23:18

It's not ruined, go early he is a parent to. He can sort childcare or not go. Is his dad terminal and likely to pass in the next few weeks? Alcoholics roll from one crisis to the next, this week's 'crisis' will be much like the others only your husband is possibly using it to control you.

Dh problem not a childcare problem. He could literally go any other day couldn’t he op. The red flags are waving on the reason you hardly ever go out. He doesn’t want you to?

Yes this, go early!

How convenient that he has to go and be supportive on the weekend you’re away. He needs to look after his kids and you need to put your foot down. I’d be considering if this marriage was a keeper to be honest

Honestly, I think he doesn't want you to go away.

My DH would have found an alternative, or suggested someone else, or done something. His just assuming you will sort it out looks like sabotage.

This 100%. This is grade A1 twattery and he is being a cunt.

sorry dear, I’m going away with friends for the first time ever as you know and you have the kids, so you will have to take them with you, rearrange or sort child care.

CalmTheFuckDownMargaret · Today 23:53

So he needs to tell his family that he can’t help them on those days as he’s with his children and you are away for the first time in their entire lives. Very much sounds like he’s timing it to clash with your time away. He’s known about it for a year. It can wait - his parents are adults. His children come first.

If my husband had wanted to go out with his friends when my mum was ill, and expected me to put staying with them first just so he could go out like a teenager, he'd have been out like a teenager every weekend as I wouldn't have wanted him back. I wouldn't have forgiven him, but I'd not have had to ask, he'd have put helping family first.

The OP didn't say that her DHs dad is critically ill.

He has decided to visit his parents, who have long standing addictions, on the very same weekend his wife has planned a rare weekend away- date in the diary a year ago. Well what a coincidence!

The following week the family are away on holiday, further evidence that the father isn't really that ill.
