Half cringing. Half admiring. Turning up at wedding after being uninvited.

We were at a wedding yesterday and we’re still at the hotel.

Husband had been out with a friend a few weeks ago and she had told him that the groom’s brother had stepped down from being best man as his stepson had not been invited.

I was delighted at this as when same thing happened to us my husband wasn’t supportive

It then emerged that he had tried to stop his own son from going but child’s mother and rest of family stepped in.

Yesterday came along and there is groom’s brother, wife and stepson sitting at back of church in casual clothes.

They then stood at entrance to churchyard at which point mother of groom saw him and started crying Family and friends including my DH shook hands.

We check in to hotel and come down and nephew is being comforted by the ushers

Brother of groom, wife and stepchild had come to hotel as well, where they stayed in the entrance for four hours.

He claimed he just wanted to be on the periphery of his brother’s big day.

I was half cringing and half admiring. I wanted to curtsy for his sheer chutzpah.

No one is talking about anything else.

Unless there’s a huge back story, it’s mean to exclude a step child. I don’t understand the bride and groom can behave like bullies because it’s their wedding view.

They aren't brothers

They are. Their parents are married. That's how it works.

FluffyBoots · Today 13:45

This is all. horrible, and frankly seems to be veering on schadenfreud. I'm off.

They literally are not. Their parents being married does not make them brothers.
Do you not understand?

KermitsABadInfluence · Today 13:47

Everyone here is a cunt and using the poor kids to make their points.

Nothing to admire from anyone here.

Hope the kids are OK.

It makes them step brothers surely?

The Equality Act 2010 explicitly defines a "sibling" to include a stepbrother or stepsister

It was really unfair to put the step child in that position, he must have picked up on the fact they weren’t wanted there. Why was the son and MIL crying?

ValueofNothing · Today 13:51

Bizarre that the groom's mother started crying when she saw her sons. And that his son needed comforting after seeing his father. Was something missed out in your OP? Was his demeanour rude or brusque?

I actually think anyone can attend a church wedding can't they? To go to the church part would have been enough of a statement IMO. It kind of borders on harassment to hang around the reception for 4 hours. Although the groom was probably unreasonable to not include the stepson.

Anyone can attend any legal marriage ceremony if they want to. Not just a church.

It doesn’t necessarily mean they should.

SlothsRUs · Today 13:53

I don’t know who brought the actual nephew but his own mother wasn’t there. He was in the same suit as the ushers.

I don’t know the circumstances of the second marriage of the brother but my DH doesn’t think it was an affair.

I don’t know why the actual nephew cried but I imagine he felt let down by his dad.

The mother of groom must have been so upset to see her other son sidelined.

I don’t know why he turned up with wife and stepson.

They sat in the vestibule of hotel with toasted sandwiches and drinks along with other members of the public.

You said he was distraught?

QuirkyHorse · Today 13:56

So the boys are quite similar in age, do they get on?
Was the groom's brother's first wife there?
Was the stepson not invited so the mother would stay away too?

It all sounds very childish.

Dandeloosha · Today 13:57

Wow, the brother sounds like an absolute pillock, making the wedding all about him. It was tacky of the bride and groom not to invite the stepchild but to stand outside ruining it for everyone else and humiliating those little kids is horrible.

SlothsRUs · Today 13:58

The actual nephew was distraught when he saw Dad et al at the hotel.

What actually happened?

Ohcrap082024 · Today 13:59

What a mess. Those poor young boys being caught up in all this nonsense between adults.

And not one thought for the bride. Dickhead men.

thefallenangelina · Today 14:00

Services in churches, including weddings, christenings, and funerals, are public, and any complete stranger may sit quietly and watch. It's only the reception that would count as "crashing the party." And by what you say, these family members sat quietly and didn't themselves cause any trouble.

Sunbringer · Today 14:00

I think it’s disgusting tbh. They went out of their way to hurt people on their wedding day and made it all about themselves.

JoyousWriter · Today 14:00

I've never used this word before but - how chavvy.

Why was he crying though, because his dad wasn't in the wedding?

ThatLemonBee · Today 14:00

I always feel this stuff is so awful and so avoidable , was it that hard to invite the stepson of his brother too ? I’m assuming brother and wife are together and kid lives with them ? I don’t think it was the moment to make a point but as a stepm and a mum whose husband is a stepdad I can see why it happened .
I feel I should pity the bride and groom but I actually don’t care , they picked making q point over family peace , and involved 2 very young kids who are old enough to remeber in the midst of it .

Her other son wasn’t sidelined he chose to make a show of himself because his partners child wasn’t invited.
