AIBU to snap after DH dragged out simple holiday hotel advice?

I’m trying to book a holiday but DH said his mate from work goes to this holiday spot every single year and he’d been telling him all about it and would be able to give us some great advice. I know how this goes … DH will hang on this guys every word no matter what I say so I said to him “ok, well I’m a bit stuck on hotels so ask him about that tomorrow (today)”

Do he comes home from work tonight and this was the convo

Me: did you ask your mate about hotels?
DH: yeah he was saying he goes every year without fail so they know all about it
Me: ok, what did he say about hotels?
DH: well, normally they go in November time but he was saying this time he got a last minute deal for October!
Me: and what did he say about hotels?
Dh: well he knows how how to get the best deals, he said they pay £3k max, nothing like the prices you were getting
Me: did you ask him about hotels??
DH: yeah he said you should ring him and he’ll tell you all about it …

At this point he starts to do an impression of me ringing this guy up complete with me typing the numbers, holding the phone to my ear waiting for an answer, saying hello etc etc … I let this ridiculousness complete and then said …

Me: well it’s just hotels I’m interested in really, did you ask him?
DH: Yeah, he recommended a few, he said you don’t need anything fancy
Me: DH!! Can you just tell me the hotels he recommended for the love of god!?
DH: I wrote them down but left the paper at work, I’ll get it tomorrow

FFS he could have just come in and said “spoke to mate, I’ve left the recommendations at work though so I’ll get them tomorrow”

WTF does he do this?? He does it all the time! It’s like he deliberately withholds the important information you’re waiting for but why?

WIBU for snapping at him and telling him what a waste of time that whole conversation was?

I don't get the reference.

Maybe he wants a conversation with his wife that lasts more than 30 seconds. Or maybe he is tired and not thinking straight.
You sound quite harsh.

Then maybe he could have a conversation about the hotels and not some pointless and irrelevant word salad!

OP, is your DH a bit thick?

Go on holiday on your own. And wherever the hell you like.

And if she’s recalling an event it always involves pointless chatter about which day it took place on: ‘last Tuesday…no it was Wednesday..or was it? No it was Tuesday because I’d been to the dentist beforehand and that was first thing on Tuesday’. and so on. It never has any relevance at all to the actual event.

My mother does this, but it's worse because my father gets involved!

"When we were in town on Tuesday, or was it Wednesday...."
Him - No it was Thursday
Her - It wasnt because ....

And so on for a good ten minutes, on a good day you then the not very funny or interesting story. However on a bad day it descends into a full on row with my mother (who is NEVER wrong) angrily jabbing at the calendar. When she is proved wrong the calendar is thrown across the room with something along the lines of "Well of course I am just stupid aren't I?" And then she takes to her bed to sulk for at least 18 hours.

OMG this is my in-laws!!
And you hear every story multiple times because MIL tells me and 30 seconds behind I hear FIL telling DH the same inane story with every minute detail. Then FIL tries to tell me the same story again… argghhh!!

my DH is starting to show patterns of this 😭😭😭. Just get to the f&@€%ing point!

He sounds like he was very heightened during this conversation. Does he often get giddy when talking about this man at work? Weird past the age of 10.

Just book a hotel you like the look of.

My SIL is like this. I call to stay in touch but an hour later, I know all the health details of people I don't know, will never meet and have no interest in. I will know that the road to their estate was blocked by a car with no handbrake and that the manufacturer of her pile cream has changed the design on the box from red to pink just to confuse her and her alone.

I have to mentally prepare to make the call, I say nothing but "Uh-Huh" all the way through and resist the urge to scream into a pillow afterwards. I reward myself with wine.

luckylavender · Yesterday 08:23

Are you sure you want his mate's advice?

CorkedWellbeing · Yesterday 08:34

My DP does this sometimes too. I think he's looking for my connection or attention. And I do understand - we're busy, we have our 3 y/o and she takes most of our focus (particularly mine) and I am definitely guilty of hurrying him along so I can just get done what I need to do.
I am trying to find more patience, but equally I do understand your frustration and I don't think you are unreasonable for just wanting the relevant information.

squarecrow · Yesterday 08:35

He learned at a young age this is how he gets attention? Sorry OP, that would do my head in!

My DH is like this, can’t answer a simple question ever, even a question that requires a simple yes or no
is impossible with him. Makes my blood boil. I’ve put it down to either one, or a mixed contribution of:
A: He likes the sound of his own voice
B: doesnt listen to what I am actually saying
C: He has moments of when he turns into a complete moron and can’t understand a simple sentence.

9 years and I’ve still not worked it out

Wait until you get to 19 years 🙄

He is an exhibitionist, he wants you hanging on his every word... It gets very tiresome and you end up really disliking them!

I would just go on trip advisor and have a look, take him and his self-importance out of the equation!

BEING SINGLE IS GLORIOUS LADIES.

So many threads where women are for some utterly unfathomable reasons choosing to marry complete dickheads over the blissful peaceful joy of being single.

I could not be arsed to have such boring pointless conversations all the time, what a waste of time.

Absolutely, this is one of the many reasons that being single hasn’t got old for me after 10+ years.

However I still get similar from garrulous teen, and also my mum does the minutiae of exactly what someone did/said who I’ve never heard of on which day and then corrects herself if she’s got a detail wrong, like I care! Not content to wang on about people I don’t know, she also has to insist I DO know who they are. “You know Maggie, she’s my next door neighbour’s dad’s friend’s catsitter and we bumped into her once at the supermarket” aaaaaaaaargghhhh

User573359 · Yesterday 08:44

I have one of those. Sympathies. Also if I cut him off or get impatient then I'm so incredibly rude and dismissive.

TheBlueKoala · Yesterday 08:47

@Diagno My dh does this as well. I tell him to get to the point and he accuses me of not wanting a discussion. Problem is it's a monologue not a discussion.

Also, what's even worse he repeats the same things over and over when he's upset about something. If someone had died I would be sympathetic but we're talking minor slights of family members or work collegues. I have told him it's not good for neither his or my mh so when he starts repeating I just hold up my hand and say I've heard this and zoom out. He's in sales and talks all day. One would think that would wear him out but no🙄

Elsvieta · Yesterday 08:53

Patronising git. I'd be doing "imitations" right back. "Why don't you ask him about it? You could say (deep voice), 'Hey Steve, what was the name of that hotel you said was so good?'" etc...

Just get something on booking.com and don't even mention it until he brings it up.

It sounds like he is enjoying baiting the Op

Just reply Ok to his first blurb and book what ever hotel you fancy

Far from the point I know, but I would actually be asking questions about the "car with no handbrake". I mean, some don't these days, right? (Mine doesn't, it has a little button). And is there a difference (for everyone else) between having the road blocked by a car with and a car without...?

You sound quite harsh.

A better conversation would be “here’s the list of hotels, let’s chat them through”

Mocking his wife and being obstructive isn’t a conversation.

Imisscoffee2021 · Yesterday 09:00

My husbands actually a quiet soul and someone who thinks before speaking, but he has this habit too where I ask him a simple question and he manages to confound it or answer an imagined implied query underneath the question, like a bloody riddle! It's strange but I put up with it because he puts up with my quirks, and I love him 😄

CherryKerry · Yesterday 09:04

My MIL used to drone on about her friends, I had no idea who Betty, Agnes,Doris, Greta, Babs, Jenny were but I knew every last detail about them, hemorrhoids and all.

Totally drove me mad as I was left to sit and nod my head whereas DH generally escaped to cut her grass or collect her prescriptions etc. My parents are 10 years younger and can see the signs or history repeating itself soon 🙈, hopefully won't be quite a torturous as they're my parents.

Dweetfidilove · Yesterday 09:05

What would the bore have said if you'd just directly asked - 'Which hotel did Bob recommend?

He's annoying, but so is your repeated 'what did he say about the hotels? That could have invited a whole thesis on the hotels; when all you need is the one recommended.

NancyThompson · Yesterday 09:06

My DH loves a good monologue! Mostly I don't mind as I find the timbre of his voice quite relaxing, but if I need a key piece of information I might chivvy him along. He's self-aware enough that he knows he does it at least.

G5000 · Yesterday 09:08

Do you remember Alex from next door?
No.
Oh, you must. The Martins’ son.
Nope.
You went to school together!
There were about 900 people at my school.
He was only a year above you. Tall boy, dark hair?
Still nothing.
You used to see him at the bus stop!
Mum, I genuinely have no idea who you mean.
His dad had that blue Volvo. And they had that little dog that was always barking.
No.
You went to his sister’s birthday party!
When?
When you were about six.
I’m 42.
Well, surely you remember Alex.
I really don’t. Why? What about him?
He’s got an air fryer.

Warmlight1 · Yesterday 09:23

Did he remember he had left the information at work and momentarily not want to tell you?

SomeOtherUser · Yesterday 09:23

I actually don't think this is so annoying. This sounds like a connection-seeking habit. I suppose it would drive me bananas after years of exposure though. 😂
