AIBU to snap after DH dragged out simple holiday hotel advice?

Diagno · 01/10/2026 23:04

I’m trying to book a holiday but DH said his mate from work goes to this holiday spot every single year and he’d been telling him all about it and would be able to give us some great advice. I know how this goes … DH will hang on this guys every word no matter what I say so I said to him “ok, well I’m a bit stuck on hotels so ask him about that tomorrow (today)”

Do he comes home from work tonight and this was the convo

Me: did you ask your mate about hotels?
DH: yeah he was saying he goes every year without fail so they know all about it
Me: ok, what did he say about hotels?
DH: well, normally they go in November time but he was saying this time he got a last minute deal for October!
Me: and what did he say about hotels?
Dh: well he knows how how to get the best deals, he said they pay £3k max, nothing like the prices you were getting
Me: did you ask him about hotels??
DH: yeah he said you should ring him and he’ll tell you all about it …

At this point he starts to do an impression of me ringing this guy up complete with me typing the numbers, holding the phone to my ear waiting for an answer, saying hello etc etc … I let this ridiculousness complete and then said …

Me: well it’s just hotels I’m interested in really, did you ask him?
DH: Yeah, he recommended a few, he said you don’t need anything fancy
Me: DH!! Can you just tell me the hotels he recommended for the love of god!?
DH: I wrote them down but left the paper at work, I’ll get it tomorrow

FFS he could have just come in and said “spoke to mate, I’ve left the recommendations at work though so I’ll get them tomorrow”

WTF does he do this?? He does it all the time! It’s like he deliberately withholds the important information you’re waiting for but why?

WIBU for snapping at him and telling him what a waste of time that whole conversation was?

My dad used to do this with a friend of his whom he, for no reason that was ever clear, worshipped and saw as the font of all knowledge on anything from childbirth to de-icing your windscreen to world peace. This friend, as I mentioned on another Mn thread recently, once put a tinned steak and kidney pie, in its sealed tin, in the oven when his wife was in hospital and blew the door off the oven.

Every time dad quoted his friend’s unassailable knowledge after that we all just shouted ‘Steak and kidney!’

A fray bentos bomb
That's the stuff of legends🤣🤣🤣♥️

My Dh is a bit like this it drives me mad too.
i said to him that why is it i ask a simple question and he talks around the answer rather then just giving the answer.

the impression is weird though whats that about?

Yeah I don’t get the impression bit!

my colleague is like this, he will be (to our manager) “so I was typing that email, did I tell you X asked for the reports? Anyway I’ve sent them over but I was sending an email to….. (5 mins later) my email isn’t working”

me “manager? My email is broken”

Omfg this makes me not want a husband

This OP made me want to break up with my boyfriend.

AmnesiacDream · Yesterday 01:06

That would have driven me mad, OP. I think you were restrained!

It does sound like he's a bit excited, though. Which is kind of cute.

My mum goes all round the houses like that. A simple enquiry about her hospital
appointment last Friday seems to require her bringing me up to speed on the previous three days as a kind of run up.

And if she’s recalling an event it always involves pointless chatter about which day it took place on: ‘last Tuesday…no it was Wednesday..or was it? No it was Tuesday because I’d been to the dentist beforehand and that was first thing on Tuesday’. and so on. It never has any relevance at all to the actual event.

If she relays a conversation you get EVERY line that someone has said:
She said ‘We haven’t had any post for four days’
I said ‘Well I have because I got a bill yesterday’
She said ‘Oh did you?’
I said ‘yes’

She’s a kind and lovely lady but man she can spin out a tale. I don’t think I could live with it all the time any more. I’ve been with DH for well over 30 years and he’s a man who doesn’t speak unless he’s got something worth saying. It’s a more peaceful life!

I’d book somewhere, and say since you refused to tell me the hotel and instead gave me this ridiculous skit of me calling your friend, I realised I could have booked in that time and I’m not having that totally information free conversation again, so I booked. Happy to book somewhere well recommended next time if you have worked out how to get and communicate the information. Keep in mind that’s up to you, I won’t beg you for it, I did that yesterday by asking 6 times what hotel it was and I regret participating in that conversation.

@SquirrelsEatingConkers
Stick a fork in me, I'm done! I laughed so hard at your story that my DH paused the TV and had me read it to him. I even did a voice impression of you. (I hope I did you proud)

P.S. It is NOT unusual for me to tell my DH, "Can I have the Reader's Digest condensed version, please?" He has been known to go off on tangents so far away from the original story, that he needs a map to find his way back to the point.

PyongyangKipperbang · Yesterday 02:24

Go on holiday on your own. And wherever the hell you like.

My mother does this, but it's worse because my father gets involved!

"When we were in town on Tuesday, or was it Wednesday...."
Him - No it was Thursday
Her - It wasnt because ....

And so on for a good ten minutes, on a good day you then the not very funny or interesting story. However on a bad day it descends into a full on row with my mother (who is NEVER wrong) angrily jabbing at the calendar. When she is proved wrong the calendar is thrown across the room with something along the lines of "Well of course I am just stupid aren't I?" And then she takes to her bed to sulk for at least 18 hours.

I have a friend like this. Everything is dragged out, and then I hear "to cut a long story short" after 20 minutes. 🙄

Sympathies my husband only ever uses a thousand words when ten would suffice.

My ex (my sons dad) is exactly the same, instead of giving me all the pertinent info in a text, time, place, drop off, collection, he'll breadcrumb it so I have to keep replying with questions.. it's exhausting

Lurkingandlearning · Yesterday 05:15

For this issue, I would text him when he is at work to ask him to photograph the recommendations and forward it to me straight away to save him the arduous task of remembering to bring it home.

Then (before booking a holiday with him) I would ask if being an irritating bell end was essential part of his identity or something he might be prepared to pack the fuck in. I doubt he will pack it in. He probably thinks he’s an amusing wag. Then I would work out his much longer I could put up with him.

I'd be looking at trip advisor rather than a man you don't know. His idea of clean and good enough might be miles away from your's. Your DH is a idiot.

All of this.

That’s a thing I hear from so many elderly people..,

I think it’s because they are a bit forgetful so they want to get everything tidily organised in their mind.

‘No, it was definitely Tuesday because I’d just been to the dentist.,,’

’’Get to the point!!’

Is all this delivered in the monotone of Uncle Colm from Derry Girls? I don’t know how you’d survive that.

The oven story 🤣🤣🤣 my pregnant bladder was not ready for that level of laughing 🤣🤣🤣

DoubtfulCat · Yesterday 06:44

@SquirrelsEatingConkers brilliant 👏😂

I fear this may be me sometimes. I don’t do it on purpose like the OP’s husband, but I can be a bit context-free at times and if I’ve made a few connections in my head in response to what DH has just said, what comes out isn’t always obviously relevant because he hasn’t been party to those connections 😬

I want to hear more about his friend.

OP, your man sounds like David Brent.

Just tell him to book the hotel and holiday since he's had such brilliant advice so there's no need for your input anymore.

Balloonhearts, your phrase 'the ins and out of a cat's arse' has cheered up my Friday morning no end.

He sounds so stupid. Sorry.

BillyBites · Yesterday 07:11

I would not take the advice of anyone who tries to tell me that I “don’t need anything fancy” regarding a holiday I am looking to take.
Find something YOU like the look of and check it out on Trip Advisor. Then, perhaps consider leaving your DH at home and going with a friend.

Newusernameforthiss · Yesterday 07:14

OK but why didn't you just phone his friend and ask him about hotels?
