AIBU to snap after DH dragged out simple holiday hotel advice?

Diagno · 01/10/2026 23:04

I’m trying to book a holiday but DH said his mate from work goes to this holiday spot every single year and he’d been telling him all about it and would be able to give us some great advice. I know how this goes … DH will hang on this guys every word no matter what I say so I said to him “ok, well I’m a bit stuck on hotels so ask him about that tomorrow (today)”

Do he comes home from work tonight and this was the convo

Me: did you ask your mate about hotels?
DH: yeah he was saying he goes every year without fail so they know all about it
Me: ok, what did he say about hotels?
DH: well, normally they go in November time but he was saying this time he got a last minute deal for October!
Me: and what did he say about hotels?
Dh: well he knows how how to get the best deals, he said they pay £3k max, nothing like the prices you were getting
Me: did you ask him about hotels??
DH: yeah he said you should ring him and he’ll tell you all about it …

At this point he starts to do an impression of me ringing this guy up complete with me typing the numbers, holding the phone to my ear waiting for an answer, saying hello etc etc … I let this ridiculousness complete and then said …

Me: well it’s just hotels I’m interested in really, did you ask him?
DH: Yeah, he recommended a few, he said you don’t need anything fancy
Me: DH!! Can you just tell me the hotels he recommended for the love of god!?
DH: I wrote them down but left the paper at work, I’ll get it tomorrow

FFS he could have just come in and said “spoke to mate, I’ve left the recommendations at work though so I’ll get them tomorrow”

WTF does he do this?? He does it all the time! It’s like he deliberately withholds the important information you’re waiting for but why?

WIBU for snapping at him and telling him what a waste of time that whole conversation was?

"Yeah, he recommended a few, he said you don’t need anything fancy"
That one sentence OP would make me run away from disregard any advice that this friend had to say. This friend reminds me of my Dad's cousin who thinks he's some kind of Judith Chalmers holiday guru. His holiday photos make me itch... let's just say their idea of a nice hotel doesn't align with ours!

The Fray Bentos bomber! What a novel use of a pie. Better than eating it I guess.

Yeah I don’t get the impression bit!

my colleague is like this, he will be (to our manager) “so I was typing that email, did I tell you X asked for the reports? Anyway I’ve sent them over but I was sending an email to….. (5 mins later) my email isn’t working”

me “manager? My email is broken”

I work in IT, and hate both the conversions.

In what way isn't it working? Are you getting an error message? Have you changed anything recently? When did it last work? Have you received and just can't send? Is the rest of the internet working from your computer? Where are you (ie. what internet connection are you using) and what's your email address.

I NEED DETAILS (just the right details)

Alittlefrustrated · Yesterday 07:20

He was just avoiding telling you that he'd forgot the piece of paper. Maybe he thought you'd kick off - like you did.
I hate waffle too.

ThatLassFromLeeds · Yesterday 07:25

I’m also married to someone like this… every story starts with a guessing game (“Guess who I saw at the shop earlier?!”), is filled with irrelevant tangents and unnecessary detail, misses out vital context and isn’t that interesting anyway.

It drives me insane, because it feels like he’s just decided to dispense words for the sake of talking, as if my time doesn’t matter and he doesn’t really care whether what he’s saying makes any sense as long as he’s saying something. If I’m telling him something I take time to organise it in my head so that it makes sense. He just gives me a stream of consciousness.

Yes, this! I also work in a support role, and when there’s a problem I need it described in detail - the amount of times I send someone a few questions and they only answer the first one is insane!

Go on holiday on your own. And wherever the hell you like.

And if she’s recalling an event it always involves pointless chatter about which day it took place on: ‘last Tuesday…no it was Wednesday..or was it? No it was Tuesday because I’d been to the dentist beforehand and that was first thing on Tuesday’. and so on. It never has any relevance at all to the actual event.

My mother does this, but it's worse because my father gets involved!

"When we were in town on Tuesday, or was it Wednesday...."
Him - No it was Thursday
Her - It wasnt because ....

And so on for a good ten minutes, on a good day you then the not very funny or interesting story. However on a bad day it descends into a full on row with my mother (who is NEVER wrong) angrily jabbing at the calendar. When she is proved wrong the calendar is thrown across the room with something along the lines of "Well of course I am just stupid aren't I?" And then she takes to her bed to sulk for at least 18 hours.

Whispers...<are you my sister?>

(If not we have identical parents.)

Even reading your post drove me insane. Could never put up with that. My next phone call would be to a divorce solicitor

Well I would obviously give more context after the first sentence but he takes 10 minutes to say his emails aren’t working with a load of pointless shit before! Say that first then explain

He sounds like a complete idiot. Maybe you find this an attractive trait but I certainly don’t.

She obviously doesn’t find it attractive in the least.

Did you even read what she wrote?

Gymnopedie · Yesterday 07:36

In this case is it really an annoying trait, or is it control?

midlifeattheoasis · Yesterday 07:37

I’m guessing he hasn’t actually got any hotel recommendations from his friends so is just waffling on to deflect

Gymnopedie · Yesterday 07:36

In this case is it really an annoying trait, or is it control?

I’ve wondered this before, in the case of my very similar DH.

If I tell him something it’s generally because either I think he’ll find it interesting, or I think he needs to know about it. Sometimes because I need to get it off my chest, too. Whereas it feels like he tells me things just so he can continue talking and hold my attention for longer. Particularly with the “Guess who I saw today?” nonsense that he usually starts with; it feels like he’s just trying to make me say that I don’t know something.

Another thing that my DH does increasingly as he gets older is that he’ll deliberately hold off on the point of his story until the end. So he’ll say “So guess who I saw today <pause while I say random names>. No, it was (and it was really nice to see him because I haven’t seen him in months (I thought he’d maybe left because I know his wife was having twins and wanted to move somewhere up north (but it turns out her mum moved into a house a few doors up from them to help out (her mum just retired a couple of years ago)))), but I was just walking into the photocopying room and I heard this voice saying “Hi Bob” and I thought “Who’s that?” and he said “Haven’t seen you for ages” and I looked round and he said “Hi” and it was Steve!”

And then he describes the conversation word by word, until I point out that I’ve never heard of Steve.

"Hey! Squirrels! I have something to tell you..."
"I'm busy and I need the loo, can it wait?"
"Listen to this Squirrels..."
"👀🤨🧐"
"no, no, honestly, it'll only take a minute! It's really good! See what happened was, it was really funny, I was at the place and I was talking to Bob. You know Bob, Squirrels, he's such a laugh. So, I was talking to Bob, Squirrels, and he told me this thing and at first it made no sense, but then I eventually got to the true meaning of it and it was like this - he says to me, Bob does, he says xyz happened last week, what do you think of that Squirrels?"
I don't think anything about it, I don't know what you're talking about, I have no context for it!"
"Well it was about this thing that happened last week, Squirrels, it followed on from that, did I tell you about that?"
"No"
"Oh, right, so this other thing happened that was [insert boring mundane long-winded thing here] and then today I was talking to them all and Bob, he says to me, do you know what he says to me Squirrels? He says to me, listen to this, he says xyz happened last week..."
"Is there a point to this story? I really need the loo and the carrots are about to boil over"
"Yes! So as I was saying, he said to me - Bob, this is - he said xyz happened last week and so I told him, I did, I said to Bob, 'listen', I said, I said 'listen Bob, what you want to do', I told him, you see, I said 'what you want to do is ABC, that'll sort it out'. That's what I told Bob, Squirrels and do you know what he did next?"
"did he piss himself, like I'm about to?"
"What?! No, of course he didn't, now what would he do that for?! Squirrels, you say the daftest things. What he did was, he said to me, Bob said to me, you know, because he's knowing all about these things, Bob is, he told me, he did, Bob said to me how he couldn't do abc because of 123. So of course, I didn't know what to say to that!".
"Thank goodness. Go deal with the mess from the carrots, I'm..."
"No! Wait! You have to hear this next bit..."
"FUCK OFF! Or I shall give you a bear hug and piss on your shoes!"
"Hrumph 😤. I was only saying!"

You have my sympathy OP.

This is fucking brilliant!

Laurmolonlabe · Yesterday 07:51

Your problem isn't with booking a holiday, it is with your husband, he is obviously very easily influenced , but doesn't want to take responsibility- just book the holiday you think would be best and ignore his jawing about his mate and his mate's holidays- if he complains saying you spent too much, say fine you book the next one.
I did this and one of 2 things will happen- 1/ You won't actually go on holiday because he is too lazy to get around to it.
or
2/ He will book the holiday but was too lazy to do much research so it will be unsuitable in some way- in my case it was 4 miles away from the beach and direct under the take off path of the airport- so not suitable for anyone really, but it explained the slightly better price than I found- he has not booked anything since and not cavilled about what i have booked- good luck.

My OH does this and it drives me mad. I had this conversation (almost verbatim) with him this morning. He makes me guess things that are not particularly interesting to guess and when I don't have time.

"Guess what we're having for dinner tonight?"
"I don't know OH, what?"
"Guess"
"I don't want to guess, I need to be out of the house in ten minutes, I need the toilet and to feed the cats. Just tell me."
"It's your second favourite meal."
"Just tell me OH I don't have time for this."
"Go on, just think about what you've told me about your list of favourite meals."
"I DON'T HAVE A 'SECOND FAVOURITE' MEAL! JUST TELL ME ALREADY."
"You don't have to get arsy!"

It's excruciating.

I have a friend like this. Everything is dragged out, and then I hear "to cut a long story short" after 20 minutes. 🙄

Gawd, I had a client like this. There would be this absolute torrent of words, and somewhere in the onslaught would be a task that she wanted me to do. Which I would miss, because it was buried in the verbal diarrhoea.

I've known other people socially whom I can't follow at all. I used to think it was me, but I've realised that some people are very unclear when they're rambling on, jumping around and missing parts out and making obscure references. So boring and annoying.

My dad used to do this with a friend of his whom he, for no reason that was ever clear, worshipped and saw as the font of all knowledge on anything from childbirth to de-icing your windscreen to world peace. This friend, as I mentioned on another Mn thread recently, once put a tinned steak and kidney pie, in its sealed tin, in the oven when his wife was in hospital and blew the door off the oven.

Every time dad quoted his friend’s unassailable knowledge after that we all just shouted ‘Steak and kidney!’

Oh my god this made me laugh

I don't disagree with this. I love my OH and net/net he improves my life immeasurably. But tedium and frustration are the price of doing business when you live with a man. If they're not really good they're not worth it.
