AIBU to snap after DH dragged out simple holiday hotel advice?

I’m trying to book a holiday but DH said his mate from work goes to this holiday spot every single year and he’d been telling him all about it and would be able to give us some great advice. I know how this goes … DH will hang on this guys every word no matter what I say so I said to him “ok, well I’m a bit stuck on hotels so ask him about that tomorrow (today)”

Do he comes home from work tonight and this was the convo

Me: did you ask your mate about hotels?
DH: yeah he was saying he goes every year without fail so they know all about it
Me: ok, what did he say about hotels?
DH: well, normally they go in November time but he was saying this time he got a last minute deal for October!
Me: and what did he say about hotels?
Dh: well he knows how how to get the best deals, he said they pay £3k max, nothing like the prices you were getting
Me: did you ask him about hotels??
DH: yeah he said you should ring him and he’ll tell you all about it …

At this point he starts to do an impression of me ringing this guy up complete with me typing the numbers, holding the phone to my ear waiting for an answer, saying hello etc etc … I let this ridiculousness complete and then said …

Me: well it’s just hotels I’m interested in really, did you ask him?
DH: Yeah, he recommended a few, he said you don’t need anything fancy
Me: DH!! Can you just tell me the hotels he recommended for the love of god!?
DH: I wrote them down but left the paper at work, I’ll get it tomorrow

FFS he could have just come in and said “spoke to mate, I’ve left the recommendations at work though so I’ll get them tomorrow”

WTF does he do this?? He does it all the time! It’s like he deliberately withholds the important information you’re waiting for but why?

WIBU for snapping at him and telling him what a waste of time that whole conversation was?

They didn’t discuss names of hotels. From the OP:

The word ‘names’ doesn’t appear once.

Instead of getting snippy with people, you could do with working on your "reading the room" skills.
Thanks for the advice, and in return, you could do with working on your actual reading skills.

That is a mad interpretation.

They are booking a holiday. If you're booking a holiday and you're stuck on hotels, you are obviously asking for recommendations for specific hotels (just as if someone asks "do you know the time?", they are obviously asking what the time is). You aren't asking for a report on the general range of hotels, their financial viability, the legal restrictions or any other information about the hotels in general. And the way we identify individual hotels is through their names.

What sort of information do you think she was asking for?

Reading through this thread has made me realise how very short tempered I am because I could not put up with this on a regular basis at all. I could make it through one conversation like this with someone I’d just met, but I couldn’t do it with someone in my actual life. I’d be like OMG JUST ANSWER THE QUESTION straight away (if it happened often like some of you say). Some of you here have the patience of saints.

Have you ever watched Friday night dinner? Because I think you've married a Martin...

Love Friday Night Dinner, but can't watch it since Paul Ritter died😞

you are the person who will genuinely answer a 'can you pass the salt' with 'probably' and then just sit there, aren't you.

No. I am not. I am not a rude person.

Why is it that pointing out how communication could be clearer to avoid future fustration has made me a target for these kinds (and worse deleted) comments?

I am being genuine and at least two other posters have said my advice is good and helpful.

So I don’t understand why you and others are reacting this way. I empathise with the OP and validated her feelings, but unlike other posters I haven’t decided it’s a personality flaw in her DH that she just either put up with or divorce over.

Surely a simple suggestion to modify your question to be more specific if you’re not getting the information you are seeking should not be so contentious or cause you and others to denigrate me.

It’s not obvious to everyone, and at least two other posters agreed my advice is good to potentially prevent future frustrations. The objective is for the OP to not have to deal with this on repeat right? So what is wrong with suggesting a communication tactic that can make her days easier.?

G5000 · 04/10/2026 08:27

but they didn't ask for salt, they asked if I could pass it. How would one know they were not just asking about my general ability to pass the salt? People have to clearer.

Burritoplease · 04/10/2026 08:42

i could barely read your account of him miming things because I felt so deeply embarrassed I really wanted to look away from the screen!! Have you ever asked him why he’s doing it? It gave me the instant ick.

amicisimma · 04/10/2026 16:48

There's a variation of this that I get from time to time (not from DH, fortunately).

Me: 'We're thinking of going to [general area]'
Them: 'We were there last month. We stayed in a really good hotel. You should go there. It was near the beach, just away from the busy part of the resort. The restaurant was excellent. The rooms were big. The towels were soft and fluffy..' And on and on...
Me: 'That sounds great. What was the name of the hotel?'
Them: 'Oh, I can't remember. Grand something or something Grand, I think.'
Me: 'I can look it up. Whereabouts in the area was it?'
Them: 'Oh, I can't remember. It wasn't far from the marina.'
Me: 'Which of the two marinas?'
Them: 'I didn't know there were two.'

I'm left wondering how they could forget the name of the resort and the hotel that they spent two weeks in mere weeks later.

Then we start on flights. 'Absolutely brilliant flight - you must go with them.' Same thing. Some airline. Some airport. Some time.

It doesn't just happen with one person. I sometimes wonder if there's a training school.

My mother in law start conversations in the middle.

Mil- ' i can believe theyre married a year!' (No context given just random statement as i walked by)
Me - who?
Mil- (acts surpised i didnt know who she was talking about) it was my sister in laws sister.

Or i say something. Like
i did x and y to help my roses.
She stares at my mouth waiting to see if i stopped talking.
you should do x and y to help your roses.
She only really listens to parts of conversations.
