Considering a holiday with a group half my age, where most are strangers.

I'm 50. I'm good friends with a 25 year old. I occasionally go out drinking and dancing with her and her friends.

Last night we were out. They were talking about their loose plans to go to ibiza next summer. I was enthusiastic and told them i was excited for them. This turned into an invite for me to join them.

I have wanted to go to ibiza my entire life. I love dance music and dancing until the early hours. But none of my friends in my life have ever wanted to join me on an ibiza holiday. And i don't want to go alone.

So I'm seriously considering taking them up on their offer.

However, they're half my age, so i won't be able to keep up. I've only met her friends a couple of times. They're nice enough, but not sure i want to go on holiday with near strangers. They've got less money than me, so I'll need to eat/sleep on their budgets. No nice meals out on holiday. And everything we do will be on their agenda and i won't feel i can interfere with that too much.

But i really want to go to Ibiza!

I'm a friendly person who gets on well with most. I can rough it for 4 days, and tell them I'm staying in if i need to rest. But still...

AIBU considering going with a bunch of 25 year olds where i only know 1 of them?

I don't know my friend that well anyway @ginasevern ? Where on earth did you get that idea from?!

You're right that they're not my friendship group @Surprisinglynice I see strangers as friends i don't yet know. They could be in my friendship group if i spent more time with them. They're lovely people.

I love travel @Butsometimesnot . I've always wanted to go to ibiza because of the music. I'm happy to holiday alone. Clubbing alone isn't much fun - I've tried here in the uk and i don't like it. My 2 clubbing friends don't want to go to ibiza.

So i have very few options aside from joining a Facebook group to go... Which will be a group of complete strangers of all ages... That some posters seem to think is a better choice than going with a good friend and her mates because I'm their mums age.

Aside from the holiday, I find it really weird that people are questioning the age difference of our friendship. Friends are people you click with and rely on. We do both for each other and have for the last 3 years.

I was invited at sentence no3 of the conversation. No time to say i always wanted to go. It was early in the evening on drink number 2, so not an alcohol induced invite, but maybe anticipation of a fun evening ahead induced.

This thread has actually made me want to go with them to prove the naysayers wrong. They're lovely women and are extremely welcoming. If they don't follow through with the invite, that's fine, I'm not chasing it. If they do, I'm seriously considering joining them.

(I read @PrettyLittleRose 's post in the same way you did @Userengage )

Or go out the same time but have your own apartment, and meet up with them when it suits?

well fabulous. That’s is you. But at 25 when you already have a good friendship group that you are already going on holiday with - paid up and sorted - it’s unlikely you view strangers your parents age as a likely friend let alone someone you go on holiday with.

Leave them be and plan something else. Please don’t raise or even hint about it - it will put them in an awkward position

Yeah i think the compromise is booking somewhere near to them at the same time. Go for 3 or 4 nights only. It would be easy to say, yeah YOLO etc but I can remember being thst age and I wouldn't have liked it, plus you're not in the friendship group.

Another one for this book the same resort fo your own thing and you can have the odd night with them

You don’t know your “friend” very well
and that was the first time you’d met these “lovely women”

OP the more you post the more I cringe

I can’t tell you how much they will privately talk about the weird woman they went out for drinks once with, older than their mum, who has booked a neighbouring hotel.

SanFranBear · 21/09/2026 07:32

You've got to go - why the fuck not! You're invited, you seem self-aware enough to know not to force yourself on them, they share an interest in something you really want to do.. its only 4 nights!

I've think you're right to wait for it to be brought back up but if it is, definitely go!!

Dottiethelurcher · 21/09/2026 07:34

I’ve been on group holidays where we’ve ended up staying in different but nearby places. It’s fine . I would do that if you go so you have somewhere to escape to. But I’d wait to see if they follow up on the invitation as it may well have been a drunken on that they didn’t really mean and I wouldn’t be offended by that.

Newname26 · 21/09/2026 07:49

Op go on a different holiday or with just your friend.

Don't go with a group half your age. People will assume your someone's mum.

They are going on what used to be a 18-30 holiday. Political correctness stopped companies being able to be agest. But that doesn't mean its right to be 50 going with a group of young girls on holiday.

I'd find it weird if my neice was to go on a girls holiday and one brought a friend the age of me.

Just don't

ClaredeBear · 21/09/2026 07:50

I don't think they were just being polite at all - a 25 year old isn’t going to ask you just out of politeness, they clearly like you. And I find the argument about not being part of their social group funny - how do we widen our friendship group if we don’t include others? Don’t listen to people trying to put you down. Of course there are loads of 50 year olds going to Ibiza - they never stopped. You’re clearly a sociable and well-liked individual. I think you should make your own arrangements and see them there. I’ve just seen @BanjoShoesresponse and I agree.

Could you not go at the same time but book your own hotel etc, then join them for some nights out if that’s what you enjoy? Then you can take yourself out for nice meals etc.

This!

You’re extremely ageist! Wow.
I think I’d be pleased.

What’s wrong with being mistaken for someone’s mum?

In my 30s a group of us used to go away once a year or so and the eldest were in their 50s…I found it hard to keep up with them to be honest. It was fine. Friends of friends mostly.

see if it gets brought up again.

otherwise just go on your own!

crikeymikey123 · 21/09/2026 08:01

I would go, and stay in a nice hotel and meet up with them ocassionally. Why not? I don't think it's weird at all. Age is just a number

LoveHearts69 · 21/09/2026 08:09

50 isn’t old at all and I used to really get along with a woman that age at work when I was 25 who would be fun on a night out, I’d definitely do what someone else said and holiday alone but meet up with them for a big night out maybe! Then if they are really encouraging about you joining them more then you can do, or if you fancy a day alone exploring you have that flexibility.

A 55 yr old colleague went last year with her partner.

An 53 yr old ex went a few years ago with a group of friends. One of the couples took their toddler.

Ex and colleague said exactly the same. They were out at all the big name clubs until the early hours and said the majority of people in them were over 35.

Fine to go with your own age group or daughter , not fine to go with 25 year old strangers

What’s wrong with being mistaken for someone’s mum?

How uncool for the group, round the pool with other young groups and they have Op. People will absolutely assume she's someone's mum.

Even in nightclubs boys will be wary of approaching, would you be game for approaching a group of young lads, if they had a Dad in tow?

You don't want to try chating someone up in front of their parent.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 21/09/2026 08:16

I wouldn’t go for the group; it would be like somebody’s mum tagging along. I’d try to find an older friend to go with at a different time. I have been on holiday with a friend who is 5 years older than me and her friend who was 10 years older than me but the kids were the same age so it didn’t really matter….

The idea of you getting a neighbouring hotel is almost as bad as you staying in the same hotel!

You care a lot about what other people think. Many people are confident in themselves and don’t need to worry about what people think.

Honestly, take no notice. When I was young I was very happy to be with older people and didn’t worry about looking “uncool” because there was an older person in our group. Same goes for present day. I’m very happy to be with a younger crew.
