Considering a holiday with a group half my age, where most are strangers.

I'm 50. I'm good friends with a 25 year old. I occasionally go out drinking and dancing with her and her friends.

Last night we were out. They were talking about their loose plans to go to ibiza next summer. I was enthusiastic and told them i was excited for them. This turned into an invite for me to join them.

I have wanted to go to ibiza my entire life. I love dance music and dancing until the early hours. But none of my friends in my life have ever wanted to join me on an ibiza holiday. And i don't want to go alone.

So I'm seriously considering taking them up on their offer.

However, they're half my age, so i won't be able to keep up. I've only met her friends a couple of times. They're nice enough, but not sure i want to go on holiday with near strangers. They've got less money than me, so I'll need to eat/sleep on their budgets. No nice meals out on holiday. And everything we do will be on their agenda and i won't feel i can interfere with that too much.

But i really want to go to Ibiza!

I'm a friendly person who gets on well with most. I can rough it for 4 days, and tell them I'm staying in if i need to rest. But still...

AIBU considering going with a bunch of 25 year olds where i only know 1 of them?

Honestly OP, ignore all the uptight posters who think this is a terrible idea. Most 25 year olds are much more easy going and will have a 'the more the merrier' or whoever is up for it is in kind of vibe, rather than getting prissy about formal invitations ratified in triplicate by all members... 😉 It sounds great, I am part of a social group of 50 somethings that party till 4am occasionally, its not a mid life crisis, its being able to let your hair down and kick back with like minded people who are keen to enjoy it while our knees hold out. And several of them bring their 20-something kids out occasionally - who say we're much more fun than their peers who are only interested in posing and taking pics for Instagram 😊 Go and enjoy!

fluffythecat1 · 20/09/2026 17:22

I would see if your friend brings it up again and if you do go book separate but near accommodation. You probably want to go for the good time but not the ‘others bringing someone home,’ ‘keys lost,’ ‘people falling out’ aspect which is much more likely at that age.
kudos for potentially doing it, there is no age limit on having a good time!

We do this. Our adult kids come to our parties and gigs with us, what we don’t do is go out solo with them and their mates or go on holiday with them and their mates.

LOL. Calling people uptight for having a different view to you. Behave!

Do you not wonder why your friends (who I assume are around your age) don't want to go?

Are you insinuating that no one over 30 should go to Ibiza? You know it’s a whole island, not just a strip of clubs for the youth?

I went Ibiza alone as a 20 something on an 18-30 holiday and had a blast. Now in my 50s, I would go back but solo or with an older group. In fact, I have just joined that FB group that a PP linked to.

Exactly. It's extremely odd, and smacks of wanting to 'get down with the kids' for a 50 year old to want to go on holiday with 25 year olds. I couldn't think of anything worse quite honestly! And when I was 25, I would NOT have wanted people in their 50s with me on my holiday with my friends. As has been said it sounds like they were just being polite, I doubt if they actually want the OP to go with them!

No, I'm calling people uptight for saying it would be embarrassing or unwelcome when they weren't party to the invitation and don't know anything about the dynamic or people involved 🤷

I'm not saying anyone over 30 should not go to Ibiza. What are you going on about? Did you mean to tag someone else?

os this your first time on a chat forum? You feel no one should respond as they weren’t there?

No, I intentionally tagged you as your post that I quoted read as if people the OP’s age should not go there. Read your post back to yourself.

Savvysix1984 · 20/09/2026 17:37

I was in Ibiza in the summer and went to a few big clubs. There was all ages of people there. So your age isn’t an issue.
if you want to go then go.

I didn't say no-one over 30 should go to Ibiza (like you accused me of saying,) and you know it. NOR DID I SAY no-one over 50 should go. I said it's odd for a 50 year old to go with a bunch of 25 years olds.

And I said to the OP 'do you not wonder why your friends of a similar age to you don't want to go to Ibiza?' (In response to the OP saying her friends don't want to go to Ibiza!!!) I did NOT say no-one over 30 should ever go to Ibiza. (OR over 50!) YOU go and read my posts back to yourself.....! And stop saying I have said stuff that I haven't said... 🙄

I am not responding to you again, quit bugging me.

That’s a shame, I was enjoying the to and fro with you. Appreciate your lengthy reply, the term of endearment and capital letters. So passionate.

Lararoft · 20/09/2026 17:52

I’ve just turned 50 & have friends of varying ages including under 30 & into early 70s!
So yes, age is basically just a number when it comes to making friends.

But.. I would not want to go on an actual holiday with a group of established friends who are a totally different generation & a different financial situation to me & where I’m only close to one of the group.
I would be very uncomfortable.

Ibiza is amazing but I’m not sure these are the right people for you to go with OP? 25 years younger is a huge age gap, and could you trust them or rely on them if necessary if the situation required it?

I used to go to Ibiza in my 20s & would love to go back although it’s probably changed since then with smartphones, social media, expensive beach clubs etc.. if none of my friends who are around my own age want to go then I will probably meet up with other solo travellers a similar age through a facebook group I follow (a different one to pp).

PrettyLittleRose · 20/09/2026 17:56

Exactly @Lararoft being mates with people of different ages is not that unusual. I have friends from 33 years of age up to 83. (I am early 50s.) I meet one lady who is 75 for coffee (every 4-5 weeks...) But someone in their 50s going on holiday to Ibiza for what is very likely a week, with a bunch of people in their early to mid 20s, is a completely different thing.

Butsometimesnot · 20/09/2026 17:58

Forget the age dimension @Whathappend … why do you want to go away with a group you openly admit are not your friends?!

ginasevern · 20/09/2026 18:19

@BanjoShoes "I am part of a social group of 50 somethings that party till 4am occasionally, its not a mid life crisis, its being able to let your hair down and kick back with like minded people who are keen to enjoy it while our knees hold out. But surely you can see that's entirely different. You party until 4am but only occasionally and with your own age group. We can all do that. And again, the 20 something kids only join you occasionally. I'm sure they find it a bit of fun and a novelty but realistically they're not hanging out with you for an entire week with you as the only 50 something.

ginasevern · 20/09/2026 18:31

@Whathappend Bad idea OP. They're half your age and total strangers, except for one person who you don't even know that well anyway. Young people are full of bonhomie, especially where drink is involved and I have no doubt they got caught up in the moment. I used to do it myself when I was younger, I'm sure many of us have. A night out with them is one thing, a week is something completely different. Someone is going to bitch about it. Go to Ibiza and live the dream but check out Facebook pages or something for people nearer your own age group.

Kindly, I think they were being welcoming, friendly and exuberant to suggest you might join them

Nothing personal but I doubt that, in the cold light of day, they'd really want a holiday with a stranger of similar age to their Mum. Sorry

Booking your own trip and having a night out with them might be a good compromise

Essentially this. Plus… drink involved.

The fact that it was a stranger rather than your friend who invited you is also telling
