Rise of far right

Sillyme1 · Today 07:00

Any one else worried about the rise of the far right in Europe. Churchill once said ‘those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it’. Obviously social conditions are different from the 1930s, but there are similarities such as using immigrants as scapegoats (not Jews this time). Things can so easily escalate and I admit to being worried

Yes, but the comparison is not the same

there is and never had been any problems caused by Jewish people. I think there is a legitimate conversation to have about immigration, and successive governments’ complete inability to assess those issues or even permit conversation about it has given oxygen to right wing parties.

Britain is a very centrist and tolerant country but also has a strong sense of fairness. The state of the Uk at the moment doesn’t feel fair. 2 years ago the population voted to get rid of the conservatives because they were failing. They didnt actually swing to the left and choose Labour, it was just a rejection of the failing party in power.

the situation is recoverable but will take some tough choices. Labour have shown they’re not prepared to do that - the mildest of welfare reform was utterly rejected by the party.

Dottiethelurcher · Today 07:12

I was listening to something the other day where they had done focus groups with wavering reform voters. The main thing they said which potentially put them off Reform was the alignment with Trump and that while they wanted control on immigration they didn’t want to end up like the US with ICE agents and the situation in Minnesota. This gave me a bit of hope that people are more moderate in this country.

HoraceCope · Today 07:14

i think we are all worried,
particularly in Germany, that is shocking.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · Today 07:15

Anyone not worried by this is probably part of the problem.

LarryForPrimeMinister · Today 07:15

Yes. But its already to late, they are in power across Europe not rising to power.

Mooselander · Today 07:19

YABVU. And what is described as the “far right” now was centralist not that long ago.

Quine0nline · Today 07:20

It is not too late but requires direct leadership, possibly unpleasant decisions and getting people convinced that the government are in charge, and know what they are doing.

For many years concerns and engagement with the "lower orders", people who we might hold out noses and sneer at, but people who count as much as "people like us" has been avoided and ignored. Unhappiness, misunderstandings have been avoided and papered over. No surprise that there is rising resentment and is still being mishandled.

MyManinCaracas · Today 07:20

I think pp hit the nail on the head; things in the U.K. don’t seem fair at the moment and it’s giving rise to far right politics. We are being told we have to keep giving whilst getting nothing in return. It’s too much.

You know Nazism was never just about Jews right? It was also about Roma, Slavs, black people, disabled people, Communists, socialists.

You're reinforcing acceptance of a similar ideology by pretending it's ok because it's not about the Jews this time.

Not enough coffee yet to express my thoughts in a coherent manner. You've done it for me.

That simply isn't true.

It absolutely is true.

Political labels aren’t fixed points in time because the political centre moves. Positions that were mainstream 20, 30 or 50 years ago are considered far right today.

That doesn’t mean the exact same people or movements were “far right” then; it means the Overton window has shifted.

You can disagree about where the line should be drawn if you really want, but pretending the political centre never moves historically just isn’t accurate.

hattie43 · Today 07:33

No it’s just people saying enough is enough .

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · Today 07:34

People in Nazi Germany believed that they had legitimate grievances. The Jews and other groups were demonised because people were struggling and they were looking for someone to blame. And when there is deep antisemitism and other forms of prejudice, it's very easy for people to be persuaded that particular groups are the cause of all their problems.

It was obviously wrong then, and it is obviously wrong now. But people are easily manipulated and they don't learn.

No, deporting people based on the colour of their skin or religion was never a centrist position.

YANBU OP, but don't give up hope. The quieter majority are tolerant and sensible in the UK.

The Overton window has indeed shifted. But to the right, and not in the other direction.

You can try to pretend that the far right isn't the far right, if you part of the problem and don't like the label. That doesn't make you right.

History will judge those who support the far right or pretend that it isn't happening.

I also think it will judge those of us who stand by and don't do enough to stop them, but many of us feel helpless in the face of the vast amounts of foreign money coming in to fund them.

piscofrisco · Today 07:39

I’m worried that far right agendas are now being normalised. I’ve just been on the thread about Portsmouth. Some of posters accusing Labour of ‘shipping in voters’ and ‘rapey foreigners’. Talk of ‘our brave boys being victimised by the Police’ These completely bizarre opinions that people are stating as facts. Im honestly shocked by it.

Zonder · Today 07:40

this is so far from true it is laughable. But I recognise your name from another thread - I see you!

Painting the far right a the centrism of yesterday is utter bollocks to anyone who has watched this country over the last 4 or 5 decades.

There are people on this site who are clearly on a recruitment drive at the moment. You can tell by the stench - division, fear, intolerance, calls to their narrowly defined views of patriotism or the home country. Dressing up like fucking brownshirts.

bigageap · Today 07:41

Unless our government addresses why the far right is rising nothing will change.

Desperate people who feel they are becoming poorer & more and more unsafe in their local areas will always veer to the side of protecting what is theirs. It shocks me that people are still shocked by this. its a tale as old as time.

FlyingApple · Today 07:42

I'd be more terrified if there wasn't a rise from the "far" right.

Indeed. If you don't live in these areas and live in your big house in a leafy nice area you don't have a clue.

If you have the same recipe and ingredient, you will get same result....
Economy, u něm, drop in life quality....

Maybe the politicans should really take the in the quote op posted....

TotaleclipseinFrance · Today 07:46

If 'far right' means not wanting boat loads of undocumented men from cultures that are usually misogynistic and hostile (a pamphlet telling them rape is 'not the done thing' in the UK, ffs.) then I guess I'm far right.

Frankly, I've had enough of my fellow women with their suicidal empathy.

'Suicidal Empathy' is a term used to express a misplaced empathy for others outside that group that destroys the group that person is in as the 'others' take advantage of the kindness to the group's detriment.
