Rise of far right

Sillyme1 · Today 07:00

Any one else worried about the rise of the far right in Europe. Churchill once said ‘those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it’. Obviously social conditions are different from the 1930s, but there are similarities such as using immigrants as scapegoats (not Jews this time). Things can so easily escalate and I admit to being worried

OP posts:

Yes I am worried. I am also worried that politicians in the centre left and centre left have not learned lessons from history. If they ignore legitimate concerns about immigration, single sex spaces etc, people will turn to the extremes.

YABVU. And what is described as the “far right” now was centralist not that long ago.

Obviously not true.

That should say centre left and centre right. I am also concerned about anti semitism on the far left, there are extremes on borh sides which are concerning.

I'm more than happy to see other countries being more pragmatic. While rapes, brutal murders and beheading attempts are minimised, the right is gathering pace.

100% this 👆

This.

The worry for me as well is that it’s such a divide that if you aren’t with them - you are against them.

If you don’t want to shoot asylum seekers and drown them by sinking their boats you want open boarders.

Therefore it’s a continual divide getting more divisive.

millymollymoomoo · Today 07:57

Define far right. Because at the moment it’s deemed anyone who wants strong borders, to stop the Islamification of Europe and to stop the illegal invasion of single fighting age men leading to increased crime and sexual attacks on women.,,,,

so far right. And much much more concerned about the Increasing damage inflicted in our society by the far left and it’s allegiance to pacifying Islamists

we are creeping towards the sane outcome as Iran

LuckyHazelFox · Today 07:57

Funny how there's a worry about 1930s style fascism returning, while the death of Jews are being called for in London. For Jews, it's never gone away. Anyone not worried by this is probably part of the problem.

soddingspiderseason · Today 08:03

There is another thread on here that is dripping with far right rhetoric about “invaders”, resistance, being “overrun”. Its abhorrent, so yes I am concerned that people are supporting this vile ideology.

Rollercoaster1920 · Today 08:03

I think you need to be more explicit with what you are worried about. Tribalism often has an irrational fear of 'others'. Tribes from all angles fall into this trap.

I'm not worried about a rise in a powerful fat right government at this stage in Europe or the UK.
I do worry that despite many many years of indication that immigration is causing social disconnect between citizens and governments that the mainstream governments have been unable or unwilling to actually do anything useful. Burnham and the German federal government can, and should listen to voters concerns.

I really am worried about the risk of protests getting large and ugly which would affect my daily life. But I have a feeling they will.
But again, governments need to listen to the people they govern and what their concerns are.

Long term? I have some faith in the quiet majority preventing crazies. But I do recognise it can happen: see Nazi Germany or The cultural resolution in China.

It's just language and tone used to try and make you feel guilty. When that doesn't work, the insults start.

I'm absolutely worried about the rise of antisemitism in the UK and beyond.

I'm also worried about the rise in hate towards other groups.

It is entirely possible to be concerned about both.

Indeed, I find myself wondering how anyone can be sincerely concerned about the rise in antisemitism while seemingly quite unconcerned about the rise in hate towards other groups.

this is so far from true it is laughable. But I recognise your name from another thread - I see you!

Painting the far right a the centrism of yesterday is utter bollocks to anyone who has watched this country over the last 4 or 5 decades.

There are people on this site who are clearly on a recruitment drive at the moment. You can tell by the stench - division, fear, intolerance, calls to their narrowly defined views of patriotism or the home country. Dressing up like fucking brownshirts.

Well said. Some of the rhetoric is utterly vile and has no place in a decent, civilised society like Britain.

lxn889121 · Today 08:08

It is worrying. Although to be honest I'm more worried about the overall condition of the UK/world/west in general.

For me, the "true" far right has always existed and will continue to do so. Nothing will change about that, and I do believe that they will remain marginalized.

But the current despair and complete lack of hope and positivity that I see in the UK, is pushing people to extreme solutions, mostly in a rightward direction, but to a less degree in other left-leaning political directions as well, as people desperately claw for any solution. These people wouldn't normally be far right or extreme at all, but end up so.

If you can get the UK back on a direction that gives people an inch of hope that things will improve, the number of people radicalizing will drop back to its normal fringe level.

(As contrast, I live in a different country these days, which has its own problems... but generally people here are optimistic about the future, and have seen and are still seeing their lives improve year by year. Politics barely gets talked about, and extreme views are so rare, because no one cares. As soon as people have faith that things are getting better, the intense and depressing focus on our problems and radical solutions vanishes from most people, who go back to getting on with daily life)

You don't think people can be "sincerely" concerned about high numbers of migration without being racist? Well that's nothing new.

Brooklyn70 · Today 08:10

i’ve been reading on Reddit posts by German people who say this has been blown out of proportion, the area where the election took place is not that significant, many old people living there and it could be considered the Alabama of America.

what is more frustrating is that immigration has been going down year on year and if it continues at this rate, it will soon reach an all time low.

i wish newspapers reported news more accurately.

You're completely misrepresenting what I said in order to suit your own political narrative, and in doing so, you're failing to engage with the point that I actually made.

Well, that's nothing new.

I am engaging with your point. You are trying to equate antisemitism with concerns about immigration, when the two are nowhere near comparable.

I'd be more terrified if there wasn't a rise from the "far" right.

Why do people make these statements and not actually explain what they mean? So pointless 🙄

I’m worried that far right agendas are now being normalised. I’ve just been on the thread about Portsmouth. Some of posters accusing Labour of ‘shipping in voters’ and ‘rapey foreigners’. Talk of ‘our brave boys being victimised by the Police’ These completely bizarre opinions that people are stating as facts. Im honestly shocked by it.

Mark Zuckerberg has a great deal to answer for. Facebook opened the door to people's timelines being flooded with mischief and exaggeration, so you get posters saying "enough is enough" and assuming their facebook/GB News/X - informed world view is a shared reality, rather than a weaponised distortion.

It's worrying that posters assume we all share the same enough as an incontrovertible reality. If I were to declare "enough is enough" (which I wouldn't becaise its an intellectual dodge to leap from "I don't like this" straight to "wildly inappropriate and dangerous reaponse" without building a case to justify it)..

..but, if I were to say "enough is enough" it would most probably be about the underfunding of public services, or greenhouse gas emissions.

AggroPotato · Today 08:15

Leaving aside labels, any government or political party that fails to listen to their voters is on borrowed time.

People are worried about immigration.

Some of those people are bigots and hate all foreigners or non white people. But many do not.

We have an ageing population, and do need some immigration, ideally young and healthy people who come to work. The EU actually gave us this, as well as making it easy for our old people to bugger off and live in Spain, thus reducing pressure on our hospitals etc.

It seems self evident that immigration from Europe, which has high educational standards and shares cultural roots with us, is a much better idea than immigration from places which have frankly backward ideas about women.

I don't think any of that is controversial.

I'm curious to know what views the German party hold that are 'far right'. I'll have to do some research.
I agree with some posters. Things have shifted so far to the left that what was once considered centrist is now seen as far right. Holding a what was once common view that men can't be women can get you labelled 'a far right extremist' by some people.

HotGrapefruit · Today 08:16

YANBU OP. My local town has loads of these new “patriots” marching and protesting. They are chanting really racist stuff, making Nazi salutes, intimidating people. Several are making money as “content creators” by filming stuff very selectively - almost all are googlable for their criminal records. It’s not remotely a centrist movement of people concerned about immigration.

The fact that almost 50% of the people voted think you are being unreasonable just shows how large the problem has become and how mainstream extreme views are getting.

Take a look at any news article about migrants drowning off a small boat, the number of laughing emojis will way outstrip the others. And the comments.

Also, people these days use the term “immigrants” to specifically mean brown people.

Not to mention the idea of Islam as a religion “incompatible with British life” as a viewpoint commonly held.

The far right is rising. They are getting bolder. And something needs to happen.
