Rise of far right

Sillyme1 · Today 07:00

Any one else worried about the rise of the far right in Europe. Churchill once said ‘those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it’. Obviously social conditions are different from the 1930s, but there are similarities such as using immigrants as scapegoats (not Jews this time). Things can so easily escalate and I admit to being worried

This has been underway for so long. Since the days of Nick Griffin.

Its happening.

You know Nazism was never just about Jews right? It was also about Roma, Slavs, black people, disabled people, Communists, socialists.

You're reinforcing acceptance of a similar ideology by pretending it's ok because it's not about the Jews this time.

Not quite correct but I get your point. National Socialism was all about the Germanic peoples and living room. It was about making Germany great again after the destruction caused by the Treaty of Versailles

The victims were all the groups that you say, plus homosexuals, career criminals, clergy and more. Basically, anybody who wasn't 'fully germanic' and supportive of the Reich's aims.

But for sheer numbers the Jews rightly take pole position for the genocide of their people.

I'm absolutely worried about the rise of antisemitism in the UK and beyond.

I'm also worried about the rise in hate towards other groups.

It is entirely possible to be concerned about both.

Indeed, I find myself wondering how anyone can be sincerely concerned about the rise in antisemitism while seemingly quite unconcerned about the rise in hate towards other groups.

Quite.

No, deporting people based on the colour of their skin or religion was never a centrist position.

YANBU OP, but don't give up hope. The quieter majority are tolerant and sensible in the UK.

There is a huge silent majority though I think that want people deported based on their immigration status and criminal history. I say this as an immigrant myself.

WeAreOnTheRoadToNowhere · Today 09:02

You are not worried about how rigid and authoritarian the left have become?
I was a union rep, paid up Labour member and I have never felt so let down
It never fails to surprise me how communism managed to kill so many yet is not feared in the same way as fascism is
I see no difference

Newbutoldfather · Today 09:02

It is worrying and the causes are multifaceted.

Globalisation and mass immigration is economically net good, so you get (generally well off) economists arguing for it. The reality is that it does increase global wealth and reduce global wealth inequality. However, within wealthy countries (which are those we normally think about), it increases wealth inequality, especially for the bottom 25%. And trickle down has been proven not to work.

And that is leaving out the societal effects outside economics, which are again felt most keenly if you are less well off.

The problem is that, although the populist right talk a good book on making things better for poorer nationals, their policy just increase wealth inequality further (look at Trump). He talks to the man in the street, and makes policy for billionaires.

And then add in social media, which the right have exploited far better, and you have a recipe for a lurch to the far right.

Woke is a thing, however much people want to pretend it isn’t. A society should be able to openly discuss all issues including trans, immigration, islamism etc. Equally we need to remember our compassion for those worse off than ourselves (such as genuine asylum seekers).

People need to try to understand the other side of the debate, whichever side they are on. That is the hallmark of a genuine liberal democracy, and we are losing it.

Secretseverywhere · Today 09:03

It seems inevitable if I’m honest. When a country endures tough times you often see the rise of “strong man” politics. The area this is in has some of lowest levels of migrants (under 10%) in Germany so there’s an element of the boogie man is coming. That said there are real issues that aren’t being addressed. At some point people say fuck it and vote for change.

The left/ centrist parties have had plenty of opportunities to address (for example) the growing problem of sexual violence against women and girls. Statistics show that “non Germans” are over represented as perpetrators. I believe the left answer to this is that migrants are mainly young men ( so in their peak rapey years) and are housed in stressful conditions so the answer is to improve conditions not prevent those who are more likely to commit sexual violence from staying. The U.K.s answer to this is let’s not keep statistics about such things as too expensive (aka likely to drive unrest in future, obviously this is a ridiculous strategy but ignorance is bliss apparently).

Stephen Fry was on the trigernometry podcast talking about this. Worth a listen.

There are many ways to look at the "rise of the far right", but it literally is democracy in action.

Personally I'm not surprised at the swing to the right, especially in the UK, where the establish parties have voted in on the promise of reducing immigration, but failed to deliver.

EasternStandard · Today 09:04

Historically whenever there has been an economic downturn and many people feel like they are struggling, they look for someone to blame,

sometimes the finger gets pointed at certain people who are seen as “different” or who are seen as a burden and we get the rise of the far right (sometimes leading to genocide)

sometimes the finger is pointed at the rich and we get the rise of the far left (sometimes leading to a revolution)

Currently we have a bit of both.

Given the increasing inequality of wealth distribution I find the left leaning position a lot more logical. The jobs are not being taken by immigrants - they’re being taken by AI and other automation/reduction of staff - and the money is going into the pockets of the tech billionaires and CEOs.

I don’t think it’s this. It’s more the beginning of the end of the current system of people moving (ie asylum). It’s decades long in conventions and laws, and very entrenched so it will be a messy change.

YABVU. And what is described as the “far right” now was centralist not that long ago.

Opposite way round. There's a concerted effort to pass off what was once considered far right extremism as the 'moderate views of ordinary concerned citizens'. Every time the far right rears it's head people pop up to pretend that they and ordinary people concerned about immigration are one and the same. Calling them 'the voice of the people' and other nonsense to frame them as mainstream.
The far right have taken issues of mainstream concern such as immigration and single sex spaces and used them as a trojan horse to gain a voice where once they'd have been unwelcome.

If the left is weak, the right will rise. The left have shown themselves to be weak. They were going to smash the gangs. They didn’t. They were going to make tough decisions - but they havnt been able to curb the welfare bill. They have gone after pubs, farmers, small businesses. Schools have less money and the millions from vat has not materialised. They have not delivered. To be honest the only one with any back bone that I have seen is Kemi - telling nige he’s a twat and telling Andy exactly what he should be doing. However, her party was also completely ineffectual whilst in power which is why we are in this mess!

The top vote in the German result far outstrips the next party, so as voice of the people goes democratically they a big group.

Immigration has been reduced, so arguably, they are delivering. However, perceptions don't match the reality and research shows that people perceive immigration to be increasing even when it is decreasing.

Presumably because of all of the shit that they read on social media.

Newbutoldfather · Today 09:19

The German result has to be put in context.

It is a tiny constituency in the old GDR. Many feel closer to Russia than to Europe.

However, it was still unexpected and a shock to mainstream politics in Germany.

Yes, in that particular area, but that isn't representative of Germany as a whole.

Just as Clacton isn't representative of the whole of the UK.

Agree with this and I've said on another thread that I believe Labour will fail on the immigration issue as although Burnham may be a pragmatic political operator, too many of their rank and file don't have the stomach for making decisions that could be viewed as mean-spirited.

For example, changing guidelines to impose a higher threshold for a successful asylum claim. Stopping chain migration where economically beneficial migrants are allowed to bring in family members who will represent a cost to the state. Retaining economic migrants on renewable work visas rather than granting indefinite leave to remain after five years, so that the state can decide whether to keep them according to the country's needs, not the desire of the migrants themselves.

These are actions that the majority recognise as necessary and frankly our government need to harden their hearts, or the voters will elect someone nastier.

Ablondiebutagoody · Today 09:22

To be fair if people are that worried, the main gripe of the right would be pretty easy to solve. Deal with mass immigration. Move on.

Mass migration has already fallen significantly. So can we all move on now and focus on the issues that are really affecting our country?

Exactly.

Jews were never a problem.
But Muslims (or other brown immigrants) are.

Which is bullshit.
