Rise of far right

Sillyme1 · Today 07:00

Any one else worried about the rise of the far right in Europe. Churchill once said ‘those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it’. Obviously social conditions are different from the 1930s, but there are similarities such as using immigrants as scapegoats (not Jews this time). Things can so easily escalate and I admit to being worried

I am engaging with your point. You are trying to equate antisemitism with concerns about immigration, when the two are nowhere near comparable.

I didn't say a word about immigration. I talked about a rise in hate towards other groups. And I am not only talking about immigrants.

You are twisting what I said because you know it's inconsistent to pretend to be worried about antisemitism while not giving a shit about the rise in other forms of racism.

Expressing legitimate concerns about immigration policy is fine. That's not what I'm talking about here and you know it.

Leaving aside labels, any government or political party that fails to listen to their voters is on borrowed time.

People are worried about immigration.

Some of those people are bigots and hate all foreigners or non white people. But many do not.

We have an ageing population, and do need some immigration, ideally young and healthy people who come to work. The EU actually gave us this, as well as making it easy for our old people to bugger off and live in Spain, thus reducing pressure on our hospitals etc.

It seems self evident that immigration from Europe, which has high educational standards and shares cultural roots with us, is a much better idea than immigration from places which have frankly backward ideas about women.

I don't think any of that is controversial.

Well said. It's actually the left who have shifted the right to the far right - in their own heads.

WecanbeheroeslikeBowie · Today 08:18

As a Brit I'm not tolerant of small boats or illegals in any shape or form. sick to death of British people coming second.😡
Bitch me for it I don't care.

TotaleclipseinFrance · Today 08:18

soddingspiderseason · Today 08:07

Well said. Some of the rhetoric is utterly vile and has no place in a decent, civilised society like Britain.

You won't have a decent, civilised society anymore if fighting
aged men from countries with values very different to those which make Britain civilised continue to be imported at the rate they currently are.

i think we are all worried,
particularly in Germany, that is shocking.

Only shocking to people who haven't been paying attention, although I suspect the demographic breakdown will be surprising to many.

There's conflation- deliberate or not - between genuine concerns and islamophobia.

DeftGoldHedgehog · Today 08:21

The far right have not so much risen, as never gone away.

I did a French degree in the 1990s and we learned about the Front National in contemporary local government, removing 'unsuitable' books from library shelves etc.

Slugfest · Today 08:23

European populations have been concerned about what they see as unsustainable immigration for years and mainstream politicians have not listened and labelled concerns as being right wing. It is unsurprising that people vote for political parties that appear to address their concerns.

Agrumpyknitter · Today 08:23

HermioneWeasley · Today 07:07

Yes, but the comparison is not the same

there is and never had been any problems caused by Jewish people. I think there is a legitimate conversation to have about immigration, and successive governments’ complete inability to assess those issues or even permit conversation about it has given oxygen to right wing parties.

Britain is a very centrist and tolerant country but also has a strong sense of fairness. The state of the Uk at the moment doesn’t feel fair. 2 years ago the population voted to get rid of the conservatives because they were failing. They didnt actually swing to the left and choose Labour, it was just a rejection of the failing party in power.

the situation is recoverable but will take some tough choices. Labour have shown they’re not prepared to do that - the mildest of welfare reform was utterly rejected by the party.

Labour have actually reduced immigration and there are 40 percent less crossings. The problem is we point to illegal immigration as the root cause of all ills and it isn’t. The amount of money spent on them versus the whole is less.

But it’s easy to whip up fear and hate against immigrants, rather than address climate change, the fact that most governments no matter left or right are owned and hugely influenced by big businesses and other rich people who don’t want a fairer tax system. We have more billionaires than we did 20 years ago.

Meanwhile there was a huge anti abortion demonstration in London this week funded by American far right Christian nationalist groups, billionaires and the group that overturned Roe and Wade. A lot of it I feel is look over there and hate these people while we slowly erode your rights, including bodily autonomy. By the time anyone notices it will be too late.

I agree. Many racists seek to conflating racism and islamophobia with legitimate concerns about immigration because it suits their agenda to do so.

I think it is usually deliberate, though in some cases, it may just be down to ignorance.

What about all those “fighting age” men in Portsmouth last night?

My local refugee centres are full of women and children. Yes there are loads of problems. They are traumatised and some are clearly trafficked and will disappear.

I suspect that a lot of people’s anxieties are caused by the massive influx of families from non EU countries taking low paid carers jobs and similar because our fellow patriots won’t do jobs that actually require them to look after their elders, which is weird because I’m sure it would really speak to their Christian values eh?

Yep it’s pretty much this

LoveItaly · Today 08:24

ForGreenHiker · Today 08:16

The fact that almost 50% of the people voted think you are being unreasonable just shows how large the problem has become and how mainstream extreme views are getting.

Take a look at any news article about migrants drowning off a small boat, the number of laughing emojis will way outstrip the others. And the comments.

Also, people these days use the term “immigrants” to specifically mean brown people.

Not to mention the idea of Islam as a religion “incompatible with British life” as a viewpoint commonly held.

The far right is rising. They are getting bolder. And something needs to happen.

Islam is incompatible with British life, or certainly will be once their numbers are large enough. Iran, Afghanistan, Lebanon and other countries were not always Islamic, but now suffer under Sharia Law. Historically, Islam always tries to dominate over other religions, and it will do in Europe if left unopposed. To not acknowledge this is either naive or disingenuous.

This is just silly. We’ve had Muslims in the country and contributing to British life for decades. Do you know any Muslims? I love Islam.

These threads are so depressing. I’m actually pretty right wing by a lot of standards. I’d happily electronically chip everyone. But these kinds of discussions just dive into racism so quickly. I wish some of these posters would integrate with the Muslims and refugees in their own towns. They would learn a lot!

The biggest issue we have is the internet algorithms.

It is literally creating monsters.

There was a study that said for the first time in HISTORY, it is now the younger generation of males who have the most misogynistic views.
This has never happened before and it’s always been the older generations that have the outdated views and with each generation comes more equality and acceptance.

If this carries on, in another 20 years women will have no rights at all.

Just look at America - child marriage is still prevalent, abortions are illegal in multiple states and now they’re trying to legalise AI child porn.

I went onto Facebook the other day for the first time in 10 years and I thought I was on an extremist page - but it was literally just a normal local one.

I can’t get over how angry people were and it was so irrational - blaming immigrants for her lack of benefits, people openly being racist, moaning that he couldn’t get a job because he’s a straight white male - but scarily how many people were agreeing with these batshit views.

I won’t ‘bitch you’

But can you explain how a small boat has made you come second?

In what way has it affected your life personally and made you as a British person come second their needs?

It is important that people hear exactly how these small boats are impacting on real people’s lives.

minipie · Today 08:37

Historically whenever there has been an economic downturn and many people feel like they are struggling, they look for someone to blame,

sometimes the finger gets pointed at certain people who are seen as “different” or who are seen as a burden and we get the rise of the far right (sometimes leading to genocide)

sometimes the finger is pointed at the rich and we get the rise of the far left (sometimes leading to a revolution)

Currently we have a bit of both.

Given the increasing inequality of wealth distribution I find the left leaning position a lot more logical. The jobs are not being taken by immigrants - they’re being taken by AI and other automation/reduction of staff - and the money is going into the pockets of the tech billionaires and CEOs.

Who has said they are against women and children?

What enabled the job market to surpress the wages of jobs vital to society like carers?

I'm not worried.

Unease around uncontrolled and hostile immigration has been growing for several years now. People aren't buying the carefully curated stats that numbers are on a downward trajectory. The situation is serious.

People are also au fait with the term 'far right' being habitually used inaccurately, ie without nuance in an entirely politically pejorative way; the term no longer aligns with its original definition.

They never see that do they? Ageism isn't as fashionable to defend against as racism is.

Labour have tanked the jobs market, which has led to an increase in emigration and a temporary drop in immigration, thus a drop in net migration. Now they are claiming the credit.

The Greens and Reform are equally deplorable in my book. I’m horrified by the rise of the Greens in my area. Hateful bigots voted for by ignorant students.
