AIBU to feel hurt that family did not notice my weight loss?

I have name changed for this to not link to other posts. But keep a long story short I have lost over 1 1/2 stone since June. I feel absolutely great and I know I look good, lots of people in work have mentioned it to me.
Here’s where my AIBU comes in. I was at a family gathering the other day…with people I have not seen in a while and some I have seen on and off! Not one person said anything. Now I know I don’t need validation for others. And I do understand that a lot of people are hesitant to comment on peoples appearance but when someone looks good and I know they’ve worked hard in themselves I always say it to them. I just feel a bit deflated I suppose. I know IABU! But it still hurts a little…

These days so many people are using jabs to lose weight I never comment. I also agree with others sounds like you were already slim enough.

I had a nose job and didn't tell my family, none of them have noticed! Maybe people aren't very observant.

Nurseposter123 · 29/07/2026 11:31

Are you on weight loss injections?

I don't say anything to people who lose weight that rapidly, I worry they are sick of on the injections too quickly and don't want to encourage it. I don't comment on people's weight.

Huh? Firstly you don’t know her height she could have been obese at 10 stone and secondly what difference does using the meds make?Confused

I’ve gone from 10st to just over 8st.

How tall are you....

EndlessTreadmill · 29/07/2026 11:22

Sounds like you didn't necessarily need to lose the weight? In the nicest possible way, it might be they thought you looked better before? (sometimes when women lose weight when they are slim already, it just comes from their face and they look hagard).

I really did. I was so bloated and felt like crap. My skin looked pasty etc. it’s the complete opposite now.

It might not have been that noticeable unless you were wearing fitted clothing?

It took until 2 stones down before people noticed I'd lost weight a few years ago...

TheRealGoose · 29/07/2026 11:33

It does sound like very unhealthy rapid weight loss op if this is from June?

Moveoverdarlin · 29/07/2026 11:33

I wouldn’t comment on someone’s weight at a family gathering.

I didn’t use meds. My bmi was actually tipped into the overweight category. I felt awful.

This would be noticeable though, she’s went from just into overweight to 20 odd bmi,

the speed of it is a worry though,

Yeah from early June to now… it just goes to show how much I was overeating to be honest. All I’m doing is eating less and walking a little bit more.

If someone comments it’s a problem

if someone Doesn’t comment it’s a problem.

You don’t need validation from anyone else.

A lot of it fell off quite fast to be honest I think most of that was water and glycogen…

YANBU. They didn’t need to mention your weight, they could have just complimented you.

Don’t be deflated, you’ve done amazingly, keep on maintaining if you’re at your target weight. There are some people who will want you to fail unfortunately.

So you have gone from a BMI of 25 ('just overweight') where people usually look ok to be honest, to a BMI of 20. That's rapid weight loss in someone not really overweight.

You were not overeating that much 😂

EvagoraY · 29/07/2026 11:37

Honestly on MN there are vociferous attacks on the very idea that anyone would ever comment on anyone else’s body. It’s practically illegal.
it’s taboo to even notice, afaics.

so all the neglect to acknowledge your achievement is actually ‘ polite’.

great, isn’t it?

Screamingabdabz · 29/07/2026 11:37

I hate it when people enthuse about weight loss as if it’s some moral victory. A fat person is still the same human being even if they get thin. Maybe your family value your character and personality more than how much you weigh. YABU.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 29/07/2026 11:39

I keep seeing these comments about how "these days" you shouldn't mention weight.

It's not a modern thing at all.

Basic old-fashioned good manners dictates not making "personal remarks".

I remember Miss Bates in Emma murmuring how well Emma looks and then catching herself with "mustn't compliment... rude" or similar.

Drawing attention to someone's body is rude, it just is, unless you know them really well and know it would be welcomed.

user1492757084 · 29/07/2026 11:39

I never ever comment on changed appearance, except to praise a new hair style.

Kokonimater · 29/07/2026 11:39

I had a nose job. I felt amazing. No one noticed. I realised people just saw me as I was. My hang up was my hang up. No one thought there was anything wrong with my nose! So people probably just see you as you. It’s not that important to them what weight you are.

Honestly, I really was. I also have an underactive thyroid. And a few other health issues that seem to be coming right now so it definitely makes a difference

Honestly, someone would need to literally halve for me to comment on their weight. Because I would also be worried they would think I thought they looked fat/ bad before. Safer to say nothing.....

ChunkyMonkey36 · 29/07/2026 11:42

My mum asked how much weight I’d lost when I last saw her, I answered her and she just sort of “hmph”d at me. Which I’d say is worse than not mentioning it.

Couldn’t be less bothered. I haven’t lost it for her, I’ve lost it for me, and it’s not her waistline etc.

Rise above it, take your personal victory and pat yourself on the back, you lost weight for your benefit not everyone else’s.
