AIBU To Point Out Opinions You Don’t See Outside Of Mumsnet …?

So I have noticed that according to (a lot of posters on) Mumsnet:

-Transphobia is perfectly acceptable.
-Ageism is the worst/most prevalent type of discrimination going on in the uk today.
-Cheating in a relationship is tantamount to murder.
-Enrolling your children in boarding school means you don’t love them.
-Teaching is always a miserable profession, with no exceptions.

What else have you noticed is a very common MN opinion but not one you hear in real life?

I’m not trying to start an argument on the truth of any of these statements, just curious what others have noticed.

That human beings can change sex.
Lots of people on Mumsnet seem to be lacking in their knowledge of human biology.
I don't know anyone who believes this outside of Mumsnet.

You've seen people on mumsnet saying that human beings can change sex?! I would say that's very much in the minority on here

That leaving a baby asleep in a hotel room with a baby monitor while you eat downstairs is neglectful and extremely dangerous.

Literally everyone I know does it. Hotels provide baby monitors to allow you to do it.

On here it is considered criminal.

I haven’t seen most of these on Mumsnet, your list is pretty goady.

But to be honest I have a number of friends who went to boarding school. They all tell me they cried every day and would never send their own children. I’m not sure that particular opinion is as uncommon as you think it is.

The last two opinions you mentioned: I think lots of people think that but won't voice it in real life (me included)

That anything over a size 10 - and 9 stone in weight - is fat.

That all policemen are rapists
That all soldiers cheat on their partners
That all teachers hate their jobs
That all teenagers are mentally scarred by school

In short, Mumsnet exagerrates everything.

I have to say, I don't know a single person who would do this, across my very large family, or my work place

No, in real life most people think that leaving your children alone in a hotel room, while you have dinner with friends in a different part of the building, (or 200 feet away in another building,) is a terrible idea, and neglectful and dangerous. Not just on here. Literally no-one I know does this.

-Enrolling your children in boarding school means you don’t love them. - it is a very odd thing to do unless you have to, to be fair

I don’t know anyone who thinks this is ok and I’m shocked that you do!

Sometimes people don’t argue when you say something to their face because they don’t want you to feel bad for doing something awful or they are embarrassed for you. If you told me this in public I’d mumble something and change the subject because I’d be shocked. Online I’ll tell you I think it’s an awful thing to do.

Literally no one I know would leave a baby by themselves to go for dinner. Definitely varies by social circle!!

Only thing I’ve seen on here that I don’t think is normal in rl is everyone having loads of spare money to save

People in real life who don’t believe in the trans stuff keep their mouth shut.

i don’t believe in it and I have had several stand up rows with various people including my daughter about it and now I keep my trap shut.

various young people at uni have told me after one of said stand up rows that they feel the same but if they say what they believe they get a massive row and it just isn’t worth it.

Completely agree that lots of MN posts exaggerate.

Disagree with most of the things mentioned here though. Who in real life leaves their kids with a hotel monitor for a start? Nobody.

MN will obviously have a certain demographic, and there’ll be people who post opinions to start arguments. But I just don’t buy the idea that there are widespread MN opinions that don’t exist in “real life”.
Maybe people don’t say them out loud. But MN is full of people who exist in “real life”, and so do their opinions.

I don't think anyone here much thinks that transphobia is acceptable. There is however much disagreement on what is / is not transphobic.

I cannot think of one single parent, not one, straight or gay, male or female, who thinks its acceptable and would even consider it.

I don’t know anyone who would do this and I certainly wouldn’t do it myself. I’d be far too anxious to enjoy myself and checking the monitor constantly.

You wouldn’t need to go up and check, you’d be able to see and hear them on the baby monitor.

Plenty of family-friendly hotels give out baby monitors so their guests can do this.

I don’t think I’d do it if the restaurant was in another building, or too far from my room - but as long as I felt the environment was safe, I could get back to my room quickly, I can see and hear them on the monitor, I was confident wouldn’t wake up etc, I can’t really see the big deal if you can see and hear them at all times.

Grandparents shouldn’t do childcare because they’ve raised their own kids already. They should now go on all-inclusive trips every month and never help with grandchildren. When they do see their grandchildren, their children should weep with gratitude.
