AIBU To Point Out Opinions You Don’t See Outside Of Mumsnet …?

So I have noticed that according to (a lot of posters on) Mumsnet:

-Transphobia is perfectly acceptable.
-Ageism is the worst/most prevalent type of discrimination going on in the uk today.
-Cheating in a relationship is tantamount to murder.
-Enrolling your children in boarding school means you don’t love them.
-Teaching is always a miserable profession, with no exceptions.

What else have you noticed is a very common MN opinion but not one you hear in real life?

I’m not trying to start an argument on the truth of any of these statements, just curious what others have noticed.

That leaving a baby asleep in a hotel room with a baby monitor while you eat downstairs is neglectful and extremely dangerous.

Literally everyone I know does it. Hotels provide baby monitors to allow you to do it.

On here it is considered criminal.

I've never met anyone who would do this. Maybe thirty years ago, but not now. A child can be snatched in an instant. It's madness to leave them alone.

People in real life who don’t believe in the trans stuff keep their mouth shut.

i don’t believe in it and I have had several stand up rows with various people including my daughter about it and now I keep my trap shut.

various young people at uni have told me after one of said stand up rows that they feel the same but if they say what they believe they get a massive row and it just isn’t worth it.

The "but you've got a cock" comment is often a winner in my experience.

I have never noticed the "cheater" and the OW being invited any less or being removed from any circle

People probably have an opinion but they keep it to themselves.

Really? So people invite the cheated upon, the cheater and the ow (or om) to things they'd previously have invited the couple to? I think people usually pick a side tbh - they don't just say "the more, the merrier" ( unless they're swingers?)

D0ntB1t3 · 28/07/2026 22:33

Completely agree with you there.

I do however know a surprising amount of trans people, through work, family and inner circle and the majority of them would go undetected by even the most savvy mumsnetter. Live normal lives, have families and jobs or the younger ones are thriving in their studies and looking at having high powered careers. I don’t know any that fit the ND, online stereotypes.

i am happy to respect other women who are uncomfortable with men in women’s spaces, and completely respect and comply with the law and their wishes

but I do not recognise this hysteria expressed on MN of gangs of peneses in frocks fulfilling their fetish

Flamingojune · 28/07/2026 22:43

I am assuming you think the way you see the world is the correct way?

Since the Madeleine McCann case it is criminal to take this unnecessary risk.

I think you are the only person I’ve ever heard on Mumsnet corroborate my claim - agree it is a particular kind of hotel where this is the norm.

I am really curious as to know where you find these hotels ? I'm 47 and have never come across one. The only services where we have stayed has been kids club for 4+ and nanny/baby-sitter service for younger children. I am pretty certain nobody I know has ever done this or if they have they def wouldn't say because they would def be judged as neglectful parents.

It sounds like it would be a dodgy hotel with escort service as well so maybe the middle east/ Dubai then? Have never been there and do not want to go even if I was payed.

That pooling all finances into one joint pot is the only way to ‘do marriage’.

IRL I don’t know anyone who does this. Instead there is a joint account in which both parties pay into, to cover shared costs. Each party keeps their main account where their paycheck is paid and where all discretionary spend takes place. Like fully grown, financially independent adults.

Related to the above: I also don’t know anyone who is a SAHP or aspires to be one. I can’t think of a single person who would willingly make themselves financially dependent on someone else. It would be unthinkable. Just not a thing in my social circle at all.

Not all SAHP are financially dependent. I'm a SAHM, but have my own money and know multiple other women who are in similar circumstances. Many women who have significant savings and investments choose to be SAHM as they want to spend time with their children. If I didn't have my own money, I would work.

MidnightPatrol · 28/07/2026 22:47

@TheBlueKoala ”It sounds like it would be a dodgy hotel with escort service as well so maybe the middle east/ Dubai then?”

… no, think 5* luxury British countryside hotels. And other countries too, but plenty in the UK that offer this.

If it was a dodgy hotel, I wouldn’t be doing it…

I have some couples in mind, some hobby related, other kids-related.

The new couples are just as present as ever. I am sure the best friends of the ex don't invite the new couple for Christmas, but that's it.

Never ever heard anyone saying "we cannot invite Bob now that he's coming with his "girlfriend".

orangehandles · 28/07/2026 22:51

I've noticed that some posters on Mumsnet start their sentences with 'So' for no good reason whatsoever.

By the way OP, all the opinions you mention are alive and well and can be found in lots of other places on the internet, and in real life too.

mamabearhatesgoldilocks · 28/07/2026 22:52

From what I've seen on MN there are a plethora of "deadbeat dads", who won't lift a finger about the home and would rather watch porn or play computer games than play with their kids.

It's quite depressing really.

I used to do this decades ago, early 00s. Other diners thought I was wrong for bothering with a baby monitor. Their kids and babies were all in the rooms without a monitor and I would normally be the only person in a large chalet or chalet hotel with a baby monitor! 😁

i obviously thought the other parents were a bit irresponsible for not having a baby monitor. I found an older toddler lost wondering the corridor on more than one occasion! And one time at such a big chalet they could easily have gone outside without going past the dining room.

chemmie · 28/07/2026 22:56

That calling a 70 year person old is ageism.

That people who go to private school aren’t privileged they just prioritise education.

That you can only be slim or morbidly obese & we don’t know what slim looks like.

You shouldn’t have more dc than you can put through uni/give a house deposit too but if your dc thinks they may have help with uni/deposit they are entitled.

Eating healthy & exercising means you won’t suffer from disease or ill health.

What a weird post, they are in the UK.

There are many, no it’s nothing like an escort service.

You are thinking of European resorts if you’re talking about kids clubs, it’s not even comparable.

supercrone · 28/07/2026 21:46

I have to say, I don't know a single person who would do this, across my very large family, or my work place

Loads of people do it though hence why hotels offer it.

PinkCatCushion · 28/07/2026 23:03

People who send their children to private school aren’t rich.

We do this because my husband is a much higher earner, everything goes into our joint account. I’m a relatively well paid professional but I don’t tell any irl because I wouldn’t want to explain his level of earnings - most people wouldn’t be aware as we invest a lot of money rather than spending it on showy items so people (like you!) may make assumptions that we do things just like them. We are still fully grown and financially independent, just people who believe we are going through life as partners and sharing everything. It would be unthinkable to me to be splitting bills or asking each other to Revolut after date night but I’m also aware that other ways of marriage will work better for other people so I try be less judgemental than you come across. Also - and this will horrify you, I was a SAHM when my kids were small and I loved it! I suppose I didn’t feel financially dependent because I was aware I could get back into workforce easily and because we took the view that we valued both our time equally whether that was caring for our children or working for financial gain. Again, each to their own, wouldn’t advise if you’re married to the type of man you can’t trust or if you wouldn’t be able to easily get back into the work force.

JLou08 · 28/07/2026 23:07

Men can't experience stress or depression. If their mood has changed there must be another woman. If a woman's mood changes, it must be because the man isn't pulling his weight.

Blueberryme · 28/07/2026 23:09

On MN people love to put themselves and others into class system boxes - back in reality I have never once overhead, or had, a conversation regarding this. Being 2026 I would have thought this was consigned to history but not on here..

Imanexcellentdrivercharliebabbit · 28/07/2026 23:12

That scrolling pornography means a DH /DP is colluding in sex trafficking exploitation / and essentially a rapist who should be immediately thrown out !

That everyone co-sleeps (whereas back in the real world our wains are sleeping (and always have) in their own beds/rooms.

Yes this - see also DH sleeps happily in the other room while we co sleep and bf till 4.5

never come across that ever and I work with families !

Dollymylove · 28/07/2026 23:17

You must not under any circumstances engage in a relationship with someone who is more than 6 months older/younger than yourself lest you be labelled a paedo/granny/grandad grabber 😆

GeorgiePorge · 28/07/2026 23:23

You think co-sleeping is unsafe but happy to leave your baby alone in a hotel room to go for dinner?

That to me is some really crazy mixed up thinking there.

Co-sleep rates tend to go hand in hand with breast feeding rates -hence low prevalence for uk. CS has statistically lower SIDs rates in first 6 months than cot in separate room.
