AIBU To Point Out Opinions You Don’t See Outside Of Mumsnet …?

So I have noticed that according to (a lot of posters on) Mumsnet:

-Transphobia is perfectly acceptable.
-Ageism is the worst/most prevalent type of discrimination going on in the uk today.
-Cheating in a relationship is tantamount to murder.
-Enrolling your children in boarding school means you don’t love them.
-Teaching is always a miserable profession, with no exceptions.

What else have you noticed is a very common MN opinion but not one you hear in real life?

I’m not trying to start an argument on the truth of any of these statements, just curious what others have noticed.

As far as the cheating being tantamount to murder and ageism statements etc. these aren’t literally what people are saying but the sentiment behind them.

The abuse people get for saying they have cheated, probably due to it triggering those that have been cheated on, doesn’t match what happens when someone cheats in ‘real life’.

The people on MN who are so aghast with this don’t go to these types of hotels. I’ve been to many of these and literally the whole point is going for dinner!

And no it’s not in another building as PP are suggesting.

I think you are the only person I’ve ever heard on Mumsnet corroborate my claim - agree it is a particular kind of hotel where this is the norm.

I dunno I think in real life most people think cheating in a marriage is up there with one of the worst things you can do to someone, they aren’t going to constantly rake that person over the coals for it but that doesn’t mean they don’t think it was an extremely shitty thing to do.

That leaving a baby asleep in a hotel room with a baby monitor while you eat downstairs is neglectful and extremely dangerous.

Literally everyone I know does it. Hotels provide baby monitors to allow you to do it.

On here it is considered criminal.

WTAF. I don't know anyone who would do that! Appalling.

Genuinely, which ones? I’m a bit Confused on that one. I think even if this was the case, Madeline McCann’s abduction would have put paid to it.

what abduction? how do you know there was an abduction?

That pooling all finances into one joint pot is the only way to ‘do marriage’.

IRL I don’t know anyone who does this. Instead there is a joint account in which both parties pay into, to cover shared costs. Each party keeps their main account where their paycheck is paid and where all discretionary spend takes place. Like fully grown, financially independent adults.

Related to the above: I also don’t know anyone who is a SAHP or aspires to be one. I can’t think of a single person who would willingly make themselves financially dependent on someone else. It would be unthinkable. Just not a thing in my social circle at all.

Not only do I know plenty of SAH mums, but I also know a few SAH wives. They don't work, never have in some case, and never wanted children (or maybe they couldn't, it's their business, no one is judging).

Seem to make the most relax and happy couples I can see 😂

Agree! It's bizarre isn't it.

Ickworth/ New Park Manor/ Woolley Grange types? Easy commute to London, bougie but baby led experience? If you’ve any more recs let me know 😂
Done those three and it’s extremely common! Everyone is there with babies & preschoolers and eating dinner post 8pm babies tucked in bed.
No doubt MN would also be moaning about the price though!

dudsville · 28/07/2026 22:24

I get tired of these threads where MN folds in on itself as if it's a single entity looking inwardly at itself. I clicked on it knowing this, so that I could say that I think there's a lot of drama in your op, and the bold statements don't seem like facts to me. There's so much variety of lifestyle and opinions on mm.

Lemonyyy · 28/07/2026 22:26

I think with the trans stuff way more people are critical or at least skeptical but unwilling to admit to it in real life. I work at a university and would get absolutely ruined for anything other than complete conformation to the group think. I work with plenty of trans students and am perfectly capable of being polite, courteous, using the desired name and pronouns and generally keeping my trap shut, but I don't think a trans man is a woman/trans woman is a man. I just don't feel safe articulating that opinion in public.

mamabearhatesgoldilocks · 28/07/2026 22:27

IMO the mistake many people make is to think that MN is a microcosm of society.
It isn't.
It's a forum where people can kick ideas about while being blissfully anonymous and create posts than can strain people's credulity.

Well I’m sorry for tiring you, it was just something I’d been thinking about based on years of observations. Obviously everyone has different opinions but there are trends on here.

I agree with you totally, you expressed the point perfectly, however most on the FWR board or whatever it’s called aren’t so tolerant. Pretty much every trans AMA is full of very hateful people.

I feel some concern for the single minded obsession with toilets and men’s fetishes expressed by some posters
IRL I don’t know a single person with such extreme, entrenched views. My DC and their mates are very ‘whatever, it’s just life’. My contemporaries generally believe you can’t change your biological sex, but don’t give a passing thought to toilet occupancy.
the only trans people I know never leave the house and are almost certainly hiding behind a character because of autism and/ or a fear of what is expected of them as an adult man or woman

People don't go around announcing it in "real-life" though.

In "real-life" it's certainly normal to roundly condemn the cheating partner of a friend. It's rare for a friend to randomly announce they are cheating and wait for a reaction or invite you to AMA

I have suggestions but I’ll send them privately so they aren’t all ‘reported to SS’.

isthisaplum · 28/07/2026 22:05

It isn’t necessarily criminal (hence the McCanns were never charged) but in the admittedly very unlikely event of an abduction, announcing your intent to leave your baby alone and unsupervised to the hotel staff is pretty darn stupid.

I really, honestly don’t know anyone who does this and I am fairly laid back about such matters as a rule! I can quite see it might have been a ‘thing’ once but I’m fairly certain it isn’t now!

I honestly never knew this would be a thing.

I’ve stayed on campsites and been outside when my little one was asleep 2 caravans up with the window open so I could hear her but I don’t think even as negligent as I was in the past that I would be up for a baby monitor in a hotel situation. I actually think my 20 year old would be aghast at me leaving one in her room.

Transphobia is as nebulous as being a woman for those who believe being a woman is nebulous.

Completely agree with you there.

I do however know a surprising amount of trans people, through work, family and inner circle and the majority of them would go undetected by even the most savvy mumsnetter. Live normal lives, have families and jobs or the younger ones are thriving in their studies and looking at having high powered careers. I don’t know any that fit the ND, online stereotypes.

According to MN, the socks/trainers and leggings combo is abhorrent

Unwelcomeknocking · 28/07/2026 22:37

Honestly? The alleged prevalence of adhd, ocd and anxiety claims on this site. It completely contradicts statistics and makes a bad name for the genuine cases.

I have never noticed the "cheater" and the OW being invited any less or being removed from any circle

People probably have an opinion but they keep it to themselves.

Fluffyscrubberdo · 28/07/2026 22:16

Madeline McCann isn’t even comparable, that was multiple buildings away on a full complex.
The hotels that offer baby listening or baby monitors generally have in the region of 20-40 bedrooms.

To be honest that's not even relevant - it's an event that took on significance larger than one very sad/ upsetting / worrying news story (given how many equally sad/ upsetting and worrying news stories are forgotten each year) and since that news story attitudes have changed significantly.

60andcounting · 28/07/2026 22:39

Not an opinion but a saying.
No contact- I would say we don't talk, or I don't talk to them.
Low contact- I keep away from them.
