Am I wrong to stay out of a falling out between two friends?

I am looking for some perspective or advice on a difficult situation with two long term friends.
Two of my closest friends have fallen out. I’ve known both of them for years. One of them, I’ll call her Emma has been slowly and quietly freezing the other one out for over a year. My other friend, I’ll call her Anna had no idea why and has been really hurt and upset by it. To make things worse, Anna has been going through a really serious health challenge during this time and has had very little support. She’s a single mother, not originally from our city, has no family nearby. I felt awful watching Emma treat her this way and honestly I do think it’s been quite unkind.
But if I’m honest, Emma also intimidates me a little. I’ve seen how she operates when she decides she doesn’t like someone or doesn’t approve of them. She can be wonderful when she’s on your side but when she turns on someone she can be quite aggressive and cutting about it. I’ve watched her do it to others and I really don’t want to end up on the receiving end of that myself.
Then Emma removed Anna from our WhatsApp mum friends group publicly, the notification showed everyone that she’d been removed, which was humiliating for Anna and she was devastated and told me so. Up till then she’d never once asked me to take sides or get involved during the eighteen months of Emma gradually freezing her out. But after this she finally asked me directly to have her back, not to fall out with Emma or cause any scenes, just to quietly be less available to her. Less coffee, less socialising, that kind of thing. She said it was what she would do for me without hesitation.
I told her I always have her back and suggested we meet for a walk to talk. But if I’m being honest, I kept avoiding making the time for it because I didn’t want to have the conversation. Because if we talked properly, I might end up feeling like I had to actually do something. And I wasn’t sure I was prepared to do that.
Then I went away on holiday. While I was away I heard about some other upsetting things that had happened to Anna but I couldn’t really face dealing with it so I sent her some holiday videos and asked how her weekend had gone.
When she told me about another hurtful incident involving Emma I didn’t really respond to that at all apart from to send her funny insta cat video. I just couldn’t face it.
Since I got back Anna has gone a bit quiet. She’s not responding when I send her funny videos or light messages. I feel like things are really awkward between us and I don’t know what to do.
I know Anna is isolated, struggling, and has been incredibly patient. I know she’s only ever asked me for one thing. I know I promised a conversation and didn’t follow through. And if I’m honest, I know exactly why things have gone quiet, because she finally saw through my excuses.
Am I wrong? Am I being a coward? And what would you do in my position?

I would try to understand why Emma has been so awful to Anna. Can't you just ask Emma? Others will obviously know as she has removed Anna from the group chat.

fancytoes · 14/07/2026 22:14

I am not sure I could be chummy with someone who is being deliberately cruel to another. Equally I see why you’d want to distance yourself from the drama. Not sure what to do but I’d add her back onto the group and see what happens.

This, fucking hell, this “mums group” is in thrall to Emma who sounds a vicious bitch!
. Anna is best away from the lot of you!

Iloveacurry · 14/07/2026 22:21

Emma sounds like a bitch, why do you want to be friends with her? Have you asked her what her problem is with Anna?

Thechaseison71 · 14/07/2026 22:22

Well you aren't a nice friend are you

LittlestBoho · 14/07/2026 22:23

So the only reason you arent getting involved is because you're scared Emma will start bullying you like she does to everyone else?

Yes, that's cowardly, and Emma sounds like an awful person. She will turn on you one day. You're just delaying the inevitable by appeasing her, plus you're losing friends along the way. Better to separate from Emma now while you still have friends.

But Anna deserves better friends than you, so you should probably stop pretending to care for her and trying to gloss over the situation with stupid cat videos. That's embarrassing.

Lilifer · 14/07/2026 22:23

The other girls don’t know and don’t get involved, me Emma and Anna were the closest. I suspect ifs for two reasons, a few years back Emma and Anna had a heated discussion about how Boris Johnson had handled Covid. Emma was insisting that Boris had done the best job he could, that he was far more intelligent than us and that we should trust his judgment and we shouldn’t question his integrity. Anna just wasn’t having that, and she completely disagreed and it was quite heated as neither would back down. I felt really uncomfortable as I hate political discussions and I’m not interested in politics - I think Emma held a grudge ever since then. A year or so later Emma’s dh (who is kind of an asshole) made a really horrible comment about Anna’s sister in front of all their friends and Anna while her sister was at the bar buying him a drink! He was really drunk so Anna said nothing to him then but the next day spoke to him privately and told him he was bang out of order for saying such horrible things about her sister and that she did not appreciate it and he was fuming that he was being taken to task, told Emma, and of course Emma was gonna take her DH’s side. I heard his comment and it was ugly and misogynistic. I would not have confronted him tho if it was me as I hate confrontation, I just wish this would all bloody go away and go back to the way it was 😖

I hate conflict. It stresses me out. And I don’t want to fall out with Emma. She is a forceful person. Plus my dh hero worships Emma’s dh. He won’t was us falling out either

Anna is asking you to listen and hear her and all you can do is send her funny cat videos? Both you and Emma are acting appallingly towards Anna. Emma by her direct behaviour and you by not challenging what is going on. Anna deserves better. It’s concerning that your husbands idea of a hero is the husband of a nasty piece of work and he’s prepared to overlook that to stay chums.

EssCarGo · 14/07/2026 22:27

Emma sounds like a supreme queen bee. Her husband sounds like a dick. And you sound like a terrible, terrible friend.

Poor Anna. She would be better off without you all.

ExBert80 · 14/07/2026 22:27

sometimes you just have to make a stand despite you hating conflict. Emma and her DH sound like horrible people. I would be Team Anna.

ExBert80 · 14/07/2026 22:29

Not sure you are going to like the comments you are going to receive. Anna is the only one out of all the people in this scenario who seems decent.

Matronic6 · 14/07/2026 22:29

Emma is a dick, and is acting like a dick because people like you are allowing her to. This read like some drama my year 6s would indulge in.

Tell Emma to grow up, add Anna back into the mums chat or create a new one which Emma has no admin rights over as she clearly can't be trusted to not act like a dick and stop being such a wet blanket and stand up for your friend.

FionnulaTheCooler · 14/07/2026 22:29

Grow a spine. I don't blame Anna for distancing herself, Emma and her husband sound like awful people and you don't sound much better for going along with their bullying.

Ohdearnotthisagain · 14/07/2026 22:29

Anna is better off without you. Unless you grow a backbone of course.

BeardySchnauzer · 14/07/2026 22:30

Can you really live with yourself being such a coward? what a horrible friend you are

Hankunamatata · 14/07/2026 22:31

You watch Emma treat people like crap, go along with it and basically follow her lead with what she did with Anna

Yes you are a coward and gutless and no friend

harriethoyle · 14/07/2026 22:32

Jesus - with friends like you, who needs enemies?! You sound utterly craven, very disloyal and if I were Anna I’d drop you like a ton of bricks.

GentlyGentlyOhDear · 14/07/2026 22:34

Wow this is awful that you would rather ignore it all than support your friend. Really mean and poor Anna!

SussexLass87 · 14/07/2026 22:35

And once she's got rid of Anna, you know you'll likely be next on her list to bully and freeze out.

You're not being much of a friend to Anna, are you OP?

Idontjetwashthefucker · 14/07/2026 22:35

Yikes, you sound as bad as Emma, right couple of mean girls

MyDayMyWay · 14/07/2026 22:35

If you see this bullying behaviour (excluding someone is bullying in my view) and don't stand against it then you are enabling it.
It sounds like you could help Anna but instead you are sending funny cat videos. I'd drop you too..

Poor Anna.

Thechateau · 14/07/2026 22:36

Emma is a bitch and you are being very cowardly. I hope Anna has some proper friends

Lilifer · 14/07/2026 22:36

Jesus I can’t believe people are being so harsh. I’ve tried to be supportive without actually taking a side. This isn’t primary school, I shouldn’t have to take a side. And it’s not easy. We all have stress in our lives and I don’t need any more. You are all judging me quite harshly without knowing much about me.

Read your OP back. Or perhaps trying pasting it into the Meta AI function on WhatsApp or another AI thingy, and see what it says to you.

I can't believe you can't understand why Anna has gone quiet. You're completely ignoring her and sending "funny" videos instead of answering her messages.

I thought this was going to be a reverse and you were Anna.
