Am I wrong to stay out of a falling out between two friends?

Lilifer · 14/07/2026 22:06

I am looking for some perspective or advice on a difficult situation with two long term friends.
Two of my closest friends have fallen out. I’ve known both of them for years. One of them, I’ll call her Emma has been slowly and quietly freezing the other one out for over a year. My other friend, I’ll call her Anna had no idea why and has been really hurt and upset by it. To make things worse, Anna has been going through a really serious health challenge during this time and has had very little support. She’s a single mother, not originally from our city, has no family nearby. I felt awful watching Emma treat her this way and honestly I do think it’s been quite unkind.
But if I’m honest, Emma also intimidates me a little. I’ve seen how she operates when she decides she doesn’t like someone or doesn’t approve of them. She can be wonderful when she’s on your side but when she turns on someone she can be quite aggressive and cutting about it. I’ve watched her do it to others and I really don’t want to end up on the receiving end of that myself.
Then Emma removed Anna from our WhatsApp mum friends group publicly, the notification showed everyone that she’d been removed, which was humiliating for Anna and she was devastated and told me so. Up till then she’d never once asked me to take sides or get involved during the eighteen months of Emma gradually freezing her out. But after this she finally asked me directly to have her back, not to fall out with Emma or cause any scenes, just to quietly be less available to her. Less coffee, less socialising, that kind of thing. She said it was what she would do for me without hesitation.
I told her I always have her back and suggested we meet for a walk to talk. But if I’m being honest, I kept avoiding making the time for it because I didn’t want to have the conversation. Because if we talked properly, I might end up feeling like I had to actually do something. And I wasn’t sure I was prepared to do that.
Then I went away on holiday. While I was away I heard about some other upsetting things that had happened to Anna but I couldn’t really face dealing with it so I sent her some holiday videos and asked how her weekend had gone.
When she told me about another hurtful incident involving Emma I didn’t really respond to that at all apart from to send her funny insta cat video. I just couldn’t face it.
Since I got back Anna has gone a bit quiet. She’s not responding when I send her funny videos or light messages. I feel like things are really awkward between us and I don’t know what to do.
I know Anna is isolated, struggling, and has been incredibly patient. I know she’s only ever asked me for one thing. I know I promised a conversation and didn’t follow through. And if I’m honest, I know exactly why things have gone quiet, because she finally saw through my excuses.
Am I wrong? Am I being a coward? And what would you do in my position?

Jesus I can’t believe people are being so harsh. I’ve tried to be supportive without actually taking a side. This isn’t primary school, I shouldn’t have to take a side. And it’s not easy. We all have stress in our lives and I don’t need any more. You are all judging me quite harshly without knowing much about me.

But this situation IS putting you in a position to take a side. You might not like that you are in that position but you are going to have to choose one, whether you like it or not. Unfortunately your inaction has given the impression you choose Emma. So if that’s not the case you are going to have to actively choose Anna.

Don’t be obtuse. It just hasn’t been your turn to be frozen out OP, but it will be. If you’d had even a tiny bit of backbone, at least when it’s your inevitable turn in the firing line, you wouldn’t then end up totally ‘friendless’ - but you’re a friend to neither imo, you’re a minion to a Queen Bee bully and a coward who let down a person who incorrectly considered you a friend. HTH

Exactly this! And I find that they’re not Queen Bees at all - they’re fake wannabe Queen Bees without a leadership bone in their body who attack the real ones. It just takes the real ones to realise that they are 🙂

BeardySchnauzer · 14/07/2026 22:54

You know what - if you break the spell and stick with Anna and just treat Emma with a little distance you might find the other ‘girls’ also break free.

you’ve been friends with Anna for 20 years and you’re sending her cat videos instead of discussing this with her. Who needs enemies with a friend like you

ClayPotaLot · 14/07/2026 22:54

You ask if you're being a coward and quite clearly, yes, you are.

Do you actually like Emma? It doesn't really sound like it as the picture you paint of her isn't very likable. So why did you go along with the ostracising of someone you did like? How is this a good way to live your life? You'll end up with no decent connections at all.

I would try to make independent connections with women in the group whom I liked and distance myself from Emma, probably leaving the group before Emma could take umbrage and turn on me.

It may be too late to reconnect with Anna, but if you really liked her, it's worth a go. And maybe start doing some work on yourself and your dislike of confrontation/conflict - it isn't doing you any favours and makes you part of the problem.

Ariana12 · 14/07/2026 22:55

To your Qs in your first post. Yes you're wrong. Yes you're a coward ( sorry but you asked). What you should have done is behave as an actual friend to Anna, responded to her, socialised with her, put her back on the WhatsApp group and had her back. She's realised that you arent a real friend and she's withdrawn for her own protection. If you want to undo the harm you will have to step up. It's not a question of conflict but of being a decent person. Only you know if you can do that.

JuliettaCaeser · 14/07/2026 22:55

It’s so bad I assumed it was one of those reverses written by the wronged party.

It’s not an argument though to take sides, it’s one person treating another badly, one who is supposed to be your friend, and you are complicit because you are not standing up to it.

You are a bystander, and I have less respect for those than for bullies. At least bullies have the courage of their convictions. Sacrificing your friends for your easy life is really cowardly

Indianajet · 14/07/2026 22:56

I have been in a similar position between two friends, and I stood up to the bully. It caused me problems, but I would do it again in a heartbeat.
You know what is the right thing to do.

havingoneofthosedays · 14/07/2026 22:57

I would rather have no friends than pander to an ‘Emma’

Nousernameideaaga · 14/07/2026 22:57

The fact that you are so shocked by the responses on this thread should show you how much you have surrounded yourself with the wrong sort of people.

A good and supportive group of friends would not allow this situation to happen.

OttersOnAPlane · 14/07/2026 22:57

That will have very negative consequences for me. Be honest can you all say you would actually do that ?

Yes, and I have. On more than one occasion. Because there is no avoiding 'taking sides' when one person is bullying another. You either stand up for your friend or you are part of the bullying.

How would your children feel if they knew their mum was taking part in bullying a friend?
How will you feel when your children are the ones ostracised and ignored and their so called friends go along with it?

estrogone · 14/07/2026 22:58

OP - You asked. You have been answered - quite unequivocally.

Time for a wee pause, and reflection on how you show up as friend and human being. If it's all too much, thats fine. Kick Anna to the curb and continue being Emma's stooge. Dont complain about it though. You can't be a decent friend and an accomplice to a bully - they are mutually exclusive.

LightningTree · 14/07/2026 22:58

I’m sorry OP but by omission you are enabling a bully.

Gwenna · 14/07/2026 22:59

CombatBarbie · 14/07/2026 22:51

Yes get off the bloody fence. Your only friends with Emma because she controls everything from what I can gather. You will probably find, when you do decided not to be a coward, others will follow suit.

I agree. I’ve seen this happen and it’s brilliant!

EssCarGo · 14/07/2026 22:59

Lilifer · 14/07/2026 22:41

I can’t add Anna back in as Emma started the group. If I start my own one and add Anna back in, then the other girls will tell Emma - that’s just a lot of drama I don’t need right now. Ok, I know I am failing Anna as a friend but it’s not my fault Emma has done this, and you never know there’s always two sides to everything, maybe there’s more to this than I know. Maybe Anna hasn’t told me everything

Well maybe she was too busy with her serious health challenges, being a single mother, and having no support.

The no support thing now includes you, sadly.

mynameiscalypso · 14/07/2026 22:59

I think the question you, and your DH, have to ask yourselves is why you so crave attention and validation from two people who sound totally insufferable. They are not nice people. Why do you hero worship them like this?

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 14/07/2026 22:59

Pick your poison time. You have to choose what's right or what's easy.

You know you are not making the morally right choice and I think you know that or you wouldnt have posted here.

Its never too late to do the right thing.

MoHarris · 14/07/2026 23:00

Emma and her husband are bullies.
You are allowing this because you don’t want to be on the receiving end of the bullying so will happily let others be bullied as long as it’s not you.
Your husband worshipping Emma’s husband even though he is a rude arsehole is also a red flag.
Emma and her husband seem well matched as do you and your husband both happy to lick the arses of bullies.

Anna deserves better. You are not her friend.
Hopefully Anna will realise she is better than you all and block you.

I have been extremely supportive of Anna all year during her health problems. I’ve driven her to health appointments, helped her with domestic stuff shopping etc, done all I could on that front, I just didn’t want to be dragged into her conflict with Emma. Why should I be, it’s between them. Maybe Emma was hurt by Anna too in that heated argument and a wife is always going to side with her husband. I’ve been a good friend to Anna, for 20odd years , supported her through her divorce etc I think some of the comments on here are really really unfair. Basically you are saying I have to withdraw from Emma, and get off the fence. That will have very negative consequences for me. Be honest can you all say you would actually do that ? Becasue it’s easy to judge but but not so easy to do the hard things

Yes because I dont have people in my life who I disagree with how they treat people.
Racist out. Sexist out. Homophobic out. Bully out.

The older I have gotten I have been proven right every time with - you want to know someone look at who they are friends with.

And a 20 year friendship wow...honestly use this as am excuse on working on your self esteem, figuring out what your value set is and if you have kids really challenge if you think your behaviour is setting them a good example as you should treat someone.

MichLBee · 14/07/2026 23:01

OP, you're an absolute fanny. Anna is better off without you all.

Kokonimater · 14/07/2026 23:01

You ought to be ashamed of yourself.
anna reaching out for support because she hurting and you ignore her but send silly videos? Poor Anna. What shit friends.

Besidemyselfwithworry · 14/07/2026 23:02

EssCarGo · 14/07/2026 22:27

Emma sounds like a supreme queen bee. Her husband sounds like a dick. And you sound like a terrible, terrible friend.

Poor Anna. She would be better off without you all.

You fit the quote "With friends like you who needs enemies". I would not be friends with someone like Emma who bullies others. Shame on you

Lilifer · 14/07/2026 23:02

I did tell her I would meet her to chat about it but I honestly haven’t been able to find the time. I run my own business, I was away on holiday for a week, then I had loads to catch up on when I got home. I had intended to meet up with her at some point but now she has gone quiet on me so I presume she’s upset with me. I came on here to get advice on what I should or shouldn’t do, I didn’t expect such vitriol. And fwiw I don’t think Emma would do this to me. For one thing I don’t get into heated discussions with her about politics so there’s that. And also I don’t want to sound big headed but I entertain and throw great dinner parties and Emma enjoys those and her dh gets on great with mine, Emma is not going to jeopardise that connection and we know too many people in common, that sounds arrogant but I don’t mean it in that way. I don’t challenge Emma because yes ok I’m an appeaser so we are never gonna fall out like she did with Anna
